About Nystrom & Associates – New Brighton

Nystrom and Associates have clinics in five states and multiple clinics in Minnesota, including the site on Silver Lake Road in New Brighton. Their New Brighton location offers substance use disorder treatment as well as treatment for co-occurring disorders.

They accept most insurance, including from companies such as Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, and many others. They also accept Medicare and Medicaid.

The substance use treatment program is for adolescents ages 12-18 and adults 18 and up. The programs are outpatient and licensed by the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS). The program includes drug screening, peer led alumni support groups, and care coordination. You’ll also have group and individual counseling. You’ll meet with a licensed alcohol and drug treatment counselor (LADC) and the counselor will be your main point of contact throughout your program.

You’ll have an individualized plan using evidence based treatment. Some of the therapies they use are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and 12 Step education.

There’s an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that offers three sessions of group therapy that run four hours each per week. They also have one one-hour individual substance use counseling session each week. Most people are in the program for about 10 weeks.

The less intensive outpatient program offers one four-hour session of group therapy per week. You’ll have one one-hour individual counseling session per week. This program also runs about 10 weeks but the length of both programs depends on your progress.

In both substance use treatment programs, you’ll get help and support for any co-occurring disorders. A few examples of a co-occurring disorder are anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder.

If you need medication for a co-occurring disorder, you can see one of the psychiatrists who specialize in the medical aspects of your care. The psychiatrists can assess your lab work, prescribe medications, and coordinate your care with other providers.

I wish I had the name of the guy who I spoke to on the phone today. If your job is dealing with insurance/billing and scheduling appointments, you should know how things work. I would like for this guy to get more training. He treated me badly on the phone and was rude. He is not educated on how insurance works. Because of his poor customer service and lack of knowledge, I will not be using your services.

Somehow my review from recent years got taken down. I need this info available to people considering N&A. I was seen by Dr. Uecker after I was evicted from my home in a foreign country (where my ability to speak their language was mild at best) and left to rot in the street by my ex-wife. He didn't listen when I told him about what happened, essentially told me I had to accept what happened and move on. No therapy provided, no allowimg me to process it with him. Tried to force a medication on me. I needed an anxiolytic BAD for the trauma I experienced; he permitted one, but it didn't help enough, so I asked for a different one. Then he up and decided: no anxiolytics/benzos for me. He was AGGRESSIVE in FORCING me to enter a DBT intake program despite the fact that I could NOT afford to be away from my duties. I kept trying to suggest outpatient DBT + temporary anxiolytics, but was again AGGRESSIVELY refused. No wiggle room for anything other than what Dr. Uecker demanded.I attempted to see a different provider within N&A, but they have a "policy" that they don't let a patient from one doctor within N&A go see a different provider within N&A. So Dr. Uecker had a total grasp over my mental health, medications, etc. without ANY listening to what I was voicing for my needs, goals, etc. He would ONLY push DBT intake. The fact I was so traumatized, voiced my needs and goals so loudly, actually tried the med Dr. Uecker pushed on me and got worse, all while needing an anxiolytic, being accused of abusing them when I needed to switch from one to a different one; gave me the one that data shows is not very effective for major trauma, then revoked even that one when I asked to switch to a different anxiolytic.Switched to a different provider and got in same week. Provider listened to me and literally let me tell him what meds I think would work best. I told him, he prescribed, suggested reasonable changes (switch from effexor to pritiq - same proven-effective meds for me but switching to a stronger, newer one) and listened when I needed therapy. Want to suggest Horizon Psych. for people because my provider there is AWESOME and never makes me feel unheard. SUCH reasonable people. Dump N&A if you want to WORK WITH a provider instead of being TOLD what you're to do. Still can't believe Uecker wouldn't budge on inpatient DBT when I was more than willing to do outpatient DBT + telling him what I needed and being absolutely shut down.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

They don't look at patients on a case by case basis, there is no individualized care. You are all treated the same and maybe that is not what truly works for you...

This place is a joke they only want your money. $600 for 15 mins what a joke and when you need them they don t answer or call back your just a dollar sing to them. Get you in and out as fast as they can . They do no research on what drugs you have tried in the past. Would definitely not recommend this place. This was at their Andover office.

This place exists solely to make money off of you, any care they provide is merely incidental to that motive. The bill $40 each for PHQ-9 and GAD-7, they bill for 15 minutes of Psychotherapy at every medication management appointment even though thats the length of the entire appointment. They will make you follow up in 1 month even if they only made trivial changes to your medication.I have been actively lied to on the phone by both their nurses and their billing department. There's a reason you can get same week appointments here that will take a couple months to get elsewhere. If you absolutely need to be seen quickly make an appointment here but also make an appointment at practically any other provider.I would note that Nystrom replies to negative reviews with a phone number to call and mostly was lied to.LOL I got the same generic reply, but as it notes I was seen at the Crystal location, but none of the other clinics have enough reviews to bother posting there and the problems seem to be institutional and not tied to a particular location. Thus I'm reviewing the main office, as it's clear from reading the other reviews that my problems are related to profit focused management.
