About Northern Tier Counseling

Not everyone is ready for counseling in an outpatient setting for addiction recovery, but if you are, you may find it helpful to consider the nonprofit Northern Tier Counseling. You’ll find ‘em located in Towanda, Pennsylvania. This counseling center specializes in providing outpatient (OP) care for those who want to overcome drug and alcohol addiction. If this sounds like you, you can expect to be treated by highly qualified staff.

What’s nice about this center is that the outpatient treatment varies from person to person. This means that the treatment you receive could differ from your peer, who is also on the path to recovery. Northern Tier Counseling does this because it understands that each person’s journey to sobriety is unique. You should also know that adults and adolescents can enroll in this center for outpatient treatment and that sessions will be held by age group.

I also like that the outpatient services are varied. You can expect to have access to diagnostic assessments, group, individual, couples, and family counseling, and other more specialized therapies depending on your addiction recovery needs.

You could also benefit from the center’s drug and alcohol education and prevention services. However, these are usually only available to adolescents as the program partners with the local district justices as a way to help teens who are facing legal consequences of addictive behaviors.

In addition, if you decide that this center offers the care you need, you must confirm with your insurance if you have coverage. If you don’t have coverage, you will likely be required to pay the full fees before receiving treatment.

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

12-step icon12-Step

12 step programs prioritize the recovery journey as a life-long process based on personal spiritual growth and ongoing peer support. Regular attendance at 12 step meetings, which are held multiple times each day in most communities, is expected. Participants also receive one-on-one mentoring by a self-selected peer sponsor. The 12 steps are designed to encourage participants' self-compassion, awareness, acceptance, and accountability. Dedicated programs for specialized groups, including seniors, teens, and families, are common.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

nicotine iconNicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

***update January 2024.I am really happy with my therapist, Alan. He has helped me work through so many issues and helped me discover ways to relax and deal with my stressors better. The new psychiatrist (Dr. B), although still via telehealth, has helped me find the right medication that has me back to where I am happy, motivated and able to deal with day-to-day issues with way less anxiety. After relocating to PA in 2021 I began seeing a therapist here. It was a bit awkward, at first. After a while things became more comfortable. I felt listened to and have had a few break throughs. The Psychiatrist, on the other hand, was rushed, impatient and via Zoom (at the location). She misdiagnosed me and changed my long-time medication to one that had me on the verge of a breakdown!Saw another Psychiatrist a few months later (also via Zoom) and put back on original meds where I m back to feeling like myself.

I wish I could give this place zero stars. I don t even know where to begin. My daughter is patient here and started seeing a therapist. They were supposed to see her once a week until the family based program that was recommended kicked in. The first two weeks were great and then things went downhill dramatically. The third week she was supposed to be seen I took the appointment time off work and then they called at 7am that morning to cancel because the therapist had an emergency. (Okay things happen), When I requested to reschedule for the next available appointment the appointment was two weeks out (that puts no counseling for my daughter for three weeks). I was furious and requested to speak with the office manager, i was put through to Jeffs voicemail, he never called me back, I waited two days called again requested yet again to speak with Jeff was told they would send him an email or a note and he would call me back. To this day still haven t heard from him not sure if he even exists or just doesn t care about the people in this office. Meanwhile dealing with all of this appointment nonsense we had signed up for their in house pharmacy delivery service. Sounds great right? Wrong. The woman in charge of this program sucks!!!! My daughter rx ran out twice because they don t have it together. Fast forward to today when I m writing this review we had an 8:20am appointment, arrived 10 minutes early, there is a sign in the office that says if you ve waited 15 minutes past your appointment time to let the receptionist know. So at 8:35 I let the receptionist know our appointment time was 15 minutes ago. She says okay I ll let her know. She comes back a few moments later and says the dr is running behind. I asked how long as at this point the appointment time was 20 minutes ago. She says I m not sure I m just the messenger, but you can reschedule if you don t want to wait ( I cannot afford to take a whole nother morning off work). I went and sat back down. 5 minutes after this conversation an administrative manager comes to me and says I m really sorry but there was a glitch in the messaging system and we were delayed in being notified that you were here and the dr started an evaluation with the next patient and that will take about an hour. I said excuse me but we were here ten minutes early how come nobody came to get us or anything. Well we use electronic communication throughout the office and we got notified late that you were here. And all I can do is apologize. And I replied if I was 20 minutes late you all wouldn t see us but we re expected to wait an hour to be seen. Unacceptable patient treatment and handling of these issues. These people do not care about your job that your trying to work and get your kid the help they need they have screwed up and failed my child as a patient more times than I can count. Please find somewhere else for you or your loved one no one deserves to be put through this being ignored, shoved off and disrespected you and your family deserve better.

I'm glad I waited to review this place.. If you have a very complex condition, this is NOT the place for you. Save yourself the time and stress. I had a wonderful therapist (who left NTC, and I can see why) and doctor who was one of only two that ever actually helped me (and sadly passed recently), and the secretarial, etc people have always been super pleasant.. but I had to go through a series of people mishandling my case to find the good ones. I've been struggling to get my paperwork straight with these people for far too long, and I can't apply for the disability I've been needing desperately for the past decade. Btw the last doctor I dealt with was via video call and she lacked empathy, did not listen to me, took no actual interest in my case, and wanted to take me off the only meds that ever worked for me. Then while I was holding back tears, had the gall to ask if I was always this emotional, which I am not. Nope, I'm done. Next.

Due to the fact that I've seen therapists and counselors and psychiatrist in other states. Never one time did I ever feel rushed out of the very first appointment or feel like I was talking to a child. The you give homework. Never have I left And thought to myself Spiritual you ask me if I'm spiritual The definition is religion if you look it up And you explained to me that spiritual is walking through the woods and if animals make me happy walking through the woods and like I explained to you no they don't my serotonin levels don't work properly seeing animals in the woods.I would love you people to get some training from Centerstone or Pinellas Safe Harbor. About actually helping Mental Health Patients, other than what you did today. I found 8 bad signs your therypist isnt good. Instead of 2 I think you should do 8 goals. Then you want to call Vermonts Judicial system and tell them you know Vermonts laws. Lady you need to be trained better. Vermont is not a joke. Ask Tina Pickett. Like I explIned to you. The day you want to speak for the Court system you are over stepping your boundries like you said to me. I dont want to over step my boundries. Its too late. You did. Chris has the right under the laws. And no I am not giving a copy of my willThat states Chris is the next of kin and I am not giving you a copy of my health care proxyAnd you are not under the law getting a copy of our civil union that is recognized as marriage we have all the same rights as marriageUntil a divorce takes place or a legal separationThat involves attorneys and the Supreme Court along with the Vermont Judicial Court as explained to meAnd you're not getting the emails from the preacher who married us like he said how are you doing Brian.Gods honest truth. Amen.

Secretaries are friendly when greeted for appointments and Med staff are attentive. My needs are always heard and addressed appropriately. The NTC Staff appear to enjoy their jobs and have smiles when walking through the building. The environment is calm and welcoming.
