About Northern Lakes Community Mental Health

Northern Lakes Community Mental Health is a unique treatment center for mental health and behavioral health in Traverse City, Michigan. What makes them unique is that they’re part of a public program, so the services they provide and who’s eligible for those services are very specific.

This facility is part of a specific public program in Michigan called the Northern Michigan Regional Entity, which provides mental health care for people who receive Medicaid. This is a prepaid health plan in Michigan which lets this facility and select other locations provide services to eligible recipients in Grand Traverse County and five other counties in Northern Michigan. Basically what this means is that you can only get treatment here if you qualify for the program, but if you do then you receive services for little or no cost.

This clinic is limited in what they can treat because of the specialized program. They can treat co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse, so you can get treatment for a dual diagnosis here if you qualify. They can’t provide treatment for addiction as a standalone condition, though. So if that’s what you need, you can contact the Northern Michigan Regional Entity and they’ll connect you to a facility that’s right for you.

The treatment at this facility takes a person centered approach. Your care team will work with you to find out what you need for recovery and create an individualized treatment plan that addresses both your addiction and your mental health.

Some previous clients have expressed frustration with poor communication and limited services. However, others say their treatment here has been an excellent help.

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Went to crisis, was told "there are a lot of people worse off then you are why are you complaining" Some staff have boundary issues. I was asked to keep secrets, misinformed about services, threatened, lied to, had my medications messed up multiple times and way to much sharing of personal information. Never did get the emdr I was seeking. There is so much wrong with the running of this place i could probabily right a essay. If you can find services else where I highly recommend it. Better off on my own. Never coming here again.

Called looking to get in as a new patient and after a 15 minute phone call I was denied services because I wasn t in crisis and they didn t feel what I was going through considered an emergency. Good to know we have this wonderful clinic telling us what we re going through isn t serious enough to be seen. I was fortunate enough to get into another clinic that s actually taking my mental health seriously.

Not everyone who calls us will be eligible for our services but we do offer assistance with finding alternative options in the community for those who are not eligible to be seen at our agency. We are mandated to serve people with serious and persistent mental illness, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and/or co-occurring substance use disorders, as well as anyone in crisis. Our Customer Services team can help follow up if a person feels they were not heard or did not receive appropriate assistance. Customer Services staff may be reached by calling 800-337-8598 or by emailing customer.service@nlcmh.org.

Just Awful. 0 stars actually. I stayed an extra week from Georgia so I could join an appointment with my mother and advocate for her. Not only did Leah at the front desk give my mother the wrong address, but she also didn t give her the full name of the clinic. And then neglected to answer the phone the morning of her appointment so we could get the correct information. The only reason I was able to find it was because I googled the phone number. We were only 4 minutes past the allotted late time. And then we were told to come back and reschedule after that. I had to leave back to Georgia, and her issues were not resolved. Very disappointing, this is a very poorly run establishment. I ll be looking into other options for her, beware!!

NLCMH and specifically the FAST program and team are phenomenal and incredibly helpful to our communities. CMH employees have been quick to respond, supportive and professional throughout multiple experiences. Lauren Franklin is a name that stands out when thinking of the FAST team and is a positive, influential and intelligent mental health provider and has consistently supported clients, individuals and families throughout multiple communities. We are lucky to have programs such as CMH to support those that need it and we are even more lucky to have professionals like Lauren doing so!

I really thought that this new CMH crisis hotline would be different but it's just another typical run you through the cookie cutter :"are you going to commit suicide?" type BS!!!

Response from the owner1 year ago
Thank you for taking the time to comment, Elizabeth. We'd like to know more about your experience and how you would have preferred the call to go. Please email info@northernlakescmh.org about how the call could have been better for you. Also, please know there is a walk-in Crisis Welcoming Center at 105 Hall Street in Traverse City. You can also walk in to any of our four offices during business hours (in Cadillac, Houghton Lake, Grayling, Traverse City).

The negative reviews are bogus. For more than a decade I have found the staff are consistently knowledgeable, helpful, and kind.
