About Northern Lakes Community Mental Health

Northern Lakes Community Mental Health is a CARF accredited facility in Houghton Lake, Michigan. They’re part of the Northern Michigan Regional Entity (NMRE). They serve people in six counties across Michigan including their Houghton Lake location. They have treatment for adults with substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders.

The NMRE is part of a prepaid inpatient health plan for the state of Michigan. They manage Medicaid funding for behavioral health services. The health center accepts most major insurance plans, Medicaid, Healthy Michigan Plan and Medicare.

You’ll need an assessment first to determine if you’re eligible for their services. If you are, you’ll start with person centered planning which recognizes your right to be in control of your life. You’ll end up with an individualized treatment plan that covers the type, amount, scope and length of your treatment services. They’ll give you a list of facilitators and a provider directory.

The facility is a link to get you to the right services, some of which may come from other agencies. In most cases, they’ll help you arrange your first appointment before you leave the office. This way you can get treatment as quickly as possible.

Adults with serious mental illness are the priority as well as people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Children with serious emotional disturbances are also a priority. The types of treatment available include counseling, outpatient treatment, medication treatment and partial or full hospitalization.

They can refer you for methadone and LAAM treatment. You may also qualify for detoxification in a residential setting and residential treatment. Residential treatment includes intensive therapy in a licensed facility.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Michigan helps participants view challenges more clearly so they can respond to them in healthy ways. During a limited number of structured sessions, clients learn about and practice these changes to effectively address substance use and mental health disorders.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Absolutely disappointed in this facility. Wouldn t never Recommend!! Sad it s the only facility in county. Some Workers have lack of empathy and the turnover of workers is terrible. . They failed my son!!. Only after he took his precious life 2 years ago is when I found out he was not given services he was entitled to. He was just a number. Im so angry and I m heartbroken forever

Left a voicemail for Amy twice asking questions about a medication since the nurse at the Grayling location was on vacation. Never recieved a call back. Ive been going to the grayling location for 5 years even though HL is closer to home. I started going there after I was treated terribly by the therapist I was seeing. Filed a complaint on her it was so bad. Grayling has been amazing. They seem to actually care about their patients.

They only deal with people with "major mental health problems" but only give one appointment a month and they will miss telephone appointments. There is only one therapist who is retired at the facility.

It's hard to give an honest review of this center simply because it is the only center available in the area. And in terms of mental health, asking for help is better than not. But NLCMH has extremely limited options. They have very few group therapy choices. They have ONE therapist on staff. They have two psychiatrists but most of your appointments will be over video-conferencing.I've been a client here for about 7 years, and they've done some wonderful things. But every group I found useful was discontinued for lack of funding. I've had two therapists and two psychiatrists leave for other jobs, or just other CMH locations. I've watched NUMEROUS staffing changes occur on every level. And with each and every change, I have found myself getting less and less of what I need to maintain or improve. It's no guarantee that your experience will be the same, but you should be aware that they may simply not have enough options to choose from in order to deal with whatever concerns you have. They will provide services if you need them. They will help get medication and treatment and therapy if you need it. It doesn't mean what you get will be any good. But in the area, again, it's your only option. And it's better than nothing.
