About NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center – Human Services

NorthPoint Health and Wellness Center is an integrated healthcare provider and human service agency in urban Minneapolis, Minnesota. They provide quality outpatient care for adults affected by opioid misuse, alcoholism and chemical dependency. They can also help you tackle co-occurring disorders. That’s if you’re struggling with both opioid dependence and mental issues simultaneously. These form the bulk of their behavioral health services for the most populated city in the state.

Their opioid recovery program primarily involves medication assisted treatment (MAT). This is the most effective evidence based technique for treating opioid use disorders or alcoholism. It uses meds approved by the FDA alongside behavioral therapy or counseling to support recovery. This combined approach addresses both the physical and psychological aspects of opioid use or alcoholism. This fosters ‘whole person’ recovery.

The program begins with an intake assessment to identify opioid treatment needs. This helps the clinical team craft a personalized treatment plan that addresses those needs. This plan includes the therapeutic approach and the specific meds to build your long term recovery. NorthPoint has various choices of meds for this purpose. They prescribe buprenorphine, Suboxone and naltrexone for opioid dependence. Acamprosate and naltrexone are used for alcoholism.

These meds reduce withdrawal symptoms and curb cravings. This makes you responsive to behavioral therapy. The facility offers individual and family therapy alongside support groups. Individual therapy involves a 1 on 1 session with your primary therapist to address personal challenges, goals and progress in recovery. Your therapist will work with you to identify triggers and develop healthier coping strategies. This may include mindfulness or stress management techniques.

Family therapy is all about improving relationships and resolving conflicts with the people you love. It ensures the family supports your recovery as a homogenous unit. This strengthens your support network and positively impacts your recovery process.

You can benefit from their varying support groups as well. They offer gender specific groups for men and women. They also provide adolescent, LGBTQ+ and dialectical behavioral therapy groups. Support groups are an avenue to connect with others who truly understand what you’re going through. This can make recovery feel less isolating. They can offer encouragement, accountability and shared tips for staying on track.

You may receive psychiatric care alongside addiction therapy if you’re affected by co-occurring conditions. The facility also offers harm reduction services like syringe exchange and overdose prevention training using NARCAN. Others are rapid HIV and hepatitis C testing, free fentanyl testing and referral to health services. These services are low-cost and they accept many types of insurance. They also provide income based discounts and can help arrange payment plans if necessary. This aligns with their goal of making treatment accessible to everyone.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Therapists often use cognitive behavioral therapy in Minnesota to treat substance use disorders because it can help clients quickly identify challenges and ways to cope with them. Its structured, specific methods require fewer sessions than other types of therapy.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

I was not seen by a regular doctor, it was frustrating. Some staff members were making fun of sick patients. It is has a dark atmosphere, and everyone acts like they hate the idea of providing any service for you

The customer service on the phone is very bad, really terrible, if you don't call early they don't answer you quickly and you can be waiting up to an hour on the line. The care at the hospital is magnificent, everyone helps you and is very kind.

I have been a patient here at least 30 years. I love NPWC the Medical staff and personnel that work here do so because this is where they want to work. This is not a place you work just for a paycheck! I love the diversity of the staff and the clients. Everyone is welcome is here.I love my Primary Dr. Schabert. I don tknow how many years I ve been her patient but I m sure it s been over a decade. She is an excellent physician. She is through and I trust her very much. She cares about her patients and will make hunt you down to ensure that you are following are orders. She tickles me!The Director, Dr. Erickson just retired after three decades! He is the kindest caring person you could ever hope to have. His presence will be missed by everyone. A bureaucrat he was not!! During Covid he was right out front inthe midst of it. Making sure the testing protocols were running properly. He was in the clinic on Saturdays! He saw patients along with the other staff. In other words he walked the talk! So congratulations Dr. Erickson on a career well done! Thank you for being youThere are so many more people that have been great to me over the years. In Behavioral Health, Therapist Ann Sparks, who is another person that is retiring this February. I will miss her very much. She has been very good to me. I felt safe telling my stories to her and she was always there for me with clarity and sage advice. Empathy when needed and a gentle but firm push when required.Dr. Alton is another person that is a good physician to have to have on your corner team. He steers the boat to where you need it to go. He keeps you grounded and I appreciate it.I don t want to forget the Health CareAttendants. They make the patient feelat at ease and take care of basic requirements for the doctors charts. This enables the doctors to spend moretime talking with their patience. Time is so valuable between a doctor and their patient. They make easier for the doctors to their jobs easier and more efficient. They are the ones that do the set ups and the finish parts as well. The front desk/ referral / triage department are the crew that makes all of Northpoint work. Their job is no easy task rather on the phone or face to face! I ve seen some delicate situations handled with kindness, patience, compassion and professionalism.I appreciate their dedication and patience they exhibit everyday on the job. They treat me with o and respect (the old school staffers know me well).I know this was a long review but this is a very special place with very special people working here.

This place has to be the worst clinic. Maybe it wasn t this bad at one point, but either they are understaffed or have stopped caring and need to hire new individuals. As an advocate for clients it has become impossible to schedule appointments. (More specifically the dental department) When you call the call center you are placed on hold for 30+ minutes, and when someone does answer they transfer you to the dental department (even though that s the option you ve chosen during directory) and the phone rings until hang up. When you go in to the location you re told to use the call center, or that appointments are full so try again tomorrow. I have a difficult time understanding how individuals in the call center have not been fired, reported, or no sort of system change has occurred for the past few months. Due to my clients having disabilities they do not deal well with change which is why they continue coming to this place, but this does not make this behavior ok. It makes anyone s life more stressful, especially when mental health/ human services staff are attempting to advocate for their individuals. The icing to me was when I asked in person is there a call service manager, and was told by the dental appointment scheduler to call the call center and ask to speak with one. Now how would I do that when the phones ARE NOT answered?! I will definitely look further into how to report this clinic, and see what further actions can be taken toward the negatives behaviors being demonstrated.
