About North Kent Guidance Services

North Kent Guidance Services of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a substance abuse and mental health treatment facility. They serve adults, children, couples, and families with a full range of outpatient services. Their staff can provide flexible scheduling, including evening and Saturday appointments.

Outpatient care is typically what people picture to think of when they picture therapy or counseling. Clients make regular appointments to meet with their care team while continuing to live at home. Since outpatient care lacks 24 hour supervision of an inpatient program, it’s typically recommended for those with mild symptoms or who have completed a higher level of care previously.

Clients receive individualized treatment following an assessment. Services offered include therapy for individuals, groups, families, and couples, cognitive (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Clients can also serve nutritional counseling and forensic and court services.

North Kent Guidance Services accepts most insurance plans. Although it doesn’t list examples, these may include Beacon, ComPsych, Wellmark, Aetna, and Amerigroup. Clients are encouraged to confirm coverage with their plan. Out of network benefits may vary.

I had a great experience here with my adult adhd assessment. It changed my life. While I was initially actually diagnosed with adhd when I was 11, since my parents chose not to medicate me or what not and hoped I d grow out of it, my adhd went untreated and apparently undocumented. Started seeing a psychiatrist and since we couldn t track down the documentation, I needed to be retested at 30 years old before we could try certain meds.Sure enough, the adhd combined results spoke for themself. I actually also have anxiety, ocd (pure O), and depression, too. My psychiatrist and I started the med trial and error period, and after 4 months consistently on my two meds (Vyvanse for adhd, Prozac for the others,) I can honestly say my quality of life has increased dramatically. I m doing better at work and in my personal life.North Kent changed my life!! Also, I went in thinking what if I don t actually have adhd, and I realized well, if I don t, the test will at least answer that and give me other answers for what s actually going on. No matter what, you ll get answers and will have guidance for the next steps. Highly recommend this place.

Arrived 15 minutes early. No one was behind the reception desk until the scheduled appointment time. No one knew what was going on. Very unprofessional and rude. Acted like we were inconveniencing them just by being there. The person running the testing didn't even show up to the building until 5 minutes after the scheduled appointment.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
12-step icon12-Step
12 step programs are typically community-based and peer-led, though many rehabs base their treatment models on this approach. Participants engage in regular 12 step meetings, which are anonymous, free, and accessible multiple times a day, 365 days a year in most communities. Participants are also mentored by self-selected sponsors who support them as they work through the 12 steps of recovery, which include addressing the causes of the disease, taking personal responsibility, and relinquishing control.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Michigan provides personalized treatment to help individuals break this cycle and regain control of their lives. Treatment methods are used in various levels of care, including inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, and standard outpatient treatment.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
postpartum-program thumbnail image
Postpartum Program
The postpartum period is a sensitive time, especially for women in addiction recovery. Rehabs with specialized programs for new mothers will offer compassionate, personalized care to meet each client's needs as they transition from pregnancy to this season of life. Care teams may include obstetricians, pediatricians, and social workers working collaboratively to give women, children, and families a healthy future.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Rude, disrespectful and most def unprofessional staff members. The phone consultation is treated as an actual appointment so expect a bill for that. When I called to discuss billing and ask why I was charged three different times for ADHD testing, the lady was rude and abruptly interrupted me while seeking understanding about it. She insisted I knew there would be multiple charges although my sons father set up the appointment. When I told her I'd like to speak to her manager about our interaction, she refused to give me her name and transferred me. Understand when scheduling an appointment with them, it is three appointments and three seperate charges. Super disappointed with their staff!!

My experience is much like that of others who have reviewed North Kent. The only conversation I had with the doctor was over the phone when he went over my results of the computer test and bubble sheet test. Overall I am very dissatisfied with my experience, because I do not feel that my concerns were addressed at all.

I went to North Kent Guidance recently to be tested for ADHD. I had read the reviews before going but decided to give it a shot anyway. It's fast food mental health unfortunately. Throughout the entire process, I spoke to the doctor a total of 10 minutes, and saw the doctor with my eyes for about 15 seconds. The staff there that I dealt with were all nice and pleasant. The entire testing process was a 14 minute computer test where you are instructed to press a button for every letter except the letter 'X'. This is supposed to measure impulsivity. The other portion of the test is a multiple choice bubble test. The entire process took about 30 minutes. Under these circumstances it makes a mockery of the diagnostic process. This is a cut-rate, get-them-through-the-door-as-fast-as-possible organization. Patients are cattle. The goal is to process as many patients through the facility as fast as humanly possible, while spending as little as possible. The fact the doctor speaks only on the phone is insulting and cheapens the entire practice of medicine. The fact that I only 'met' the doctor in person for about 15 seconds is insulting. The idea you can understand the clear picture of a person's psyche in under 30 minutes is a laughable and deeply unscientific one. There's no question; this is simply not a serious, credible, professional healthcare organization. North Kent Guidance Services rather is McDonalds for your mental health. I strongly advise you look elsewhere for mental healthcare.Update, 10/26/23: I'd just like to plant a flag here for all to see, notice the automated response I got on my review here, and how it is the same corporate doublespeak they've used to respond to every single person who complained. Is that the behavior of a healthcare provider you want you or your child to depend on for clear headed, straight thinking care?

I don't normally write reviews, but I just feel like I have to so others can be more informed. I think it is very necessary as the patient to ask questions and do your research before going into having any testing done here, as their communication was not very good. I was very misinformed during this testing process.I went through NorthKent Guidance to have an ADHD/ADD test. I was under the impression that I would be speaking with the doctor about my concerns and reasonings for why I wanted this test. The testing was on the computer, which is totally fine, and a bubble sheet test. After that I was told that was the whole process. I never got to speak to the doctor. I felt like this test didn't do an accurate job of explaining my concerns. I just didn't understand how this online test and bubble sheet could diagnose me without him actually meeting me and getting to know me. However, I'm sure this is just protocol and they way things work.I was told by (I think an intern) that I would be able to sit down with the doctor at my follow up appointment and have a conversation with him. I showed up at my appointment and then was told that the appointment was actually just a phone call. The only staff to be apologetic was the receptionist. So I sat out in my car while the doctor read me my results while he was inside. He read through these in a very rushed manor and spoke very, very quickly. After telling him I was having a hard time understanding him, I was still not invited back in to meet in person when he knew that I was sitting out in the parking lot. I also needed to ask who I was speaking to because the doctor never introduced himself on the phone :(Overall, I'm glad I took the test so I can take the next steps to helping myself. Unfortunately, I don't think this is the place for me to do this. I'm sure the therapists here are very nice and this review does not account for any of them.

One of the reasons I decided to work with this location, despite the bad reviews, was that they worked with my insurance provider. As someone that has been taken advantage of by the medical system and insurance companies I felt I had done my due diligence to avoid that from happening in this case. I called my insurance company, verified cost and had them send me a list of approved facilities. This being one.I then get a bill that was higher than anticipated and upon calling this location I was informed it was even higher than the bill I had in my hand. The fist charge, which I absolutely wasn't told would be there, was for a "diagnosis" fee. I've already had therapy before and the questions asked were rudimentary and took 30 minutes. And again. I was, at no point, informed that this would be an additional cost. Had I known that I probably would have decided against even switching to this office.Furthermore, my therapist decided that the time we both had set and agreed upon wasn't going to work with her schedule. Instead of a call to reschedule she went ahead and changed the time of my appointment and sent an email through a portal that went to my spam folder. And even when I finally became aware of it (when she called me at a time I wasn't expecting the call) I couldn't even access the message because I was never given access to said portal. While a part of this is in error to the terrible insurance industry we have... I feel that this company is preying on people who otherwise shouldn't be further provoked or put into worse financial strain, which may be causing some of their mental distress. If you've hung in this far to read this. Don't go here. Do yourself and your mental health a favor and seek help somewhere else. A yoga studio would be less of a financial burden and offer more help with anxiety or stress relief than this place which had only added to my stress and anxiety. Absolute shame.
