Medical briefcase icon Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Clients who are exiting detox or stepping down from intensive inpatient care typically transition directly into outpatient treatment. Outpatient programs are designed to allow clients to either re-enter or remain in their communities while receiving robust, personalized care. Many facilities offer evening, night, or weekend services to accommodate clients' home and work schedules. The most common outpatient treatment modalities include psychotherapy, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Their optional 12-week intensive outpatient program provides the perfect bridge from inpatient treatment to sober living and offers extra clinical support for individuals with complicated addictions histories, multiple relapses or little experience in recovery. Currently, their IOP is only open to our sober living program residents to ensure program quality, continuity and safety.

aftercare iconAftercare

Rehab aftercare programs offer a complete continuum of care for clients in the maintenance phase of recovery and are predicated on the idea that addiction disease is a chronic condition prone to relapse and warranting continuing care. Clients collaborate with their care team and case manager to access the specific rehab aftercare services they need to promote their sustained sobriety. Peer coaching, relapse prevention services, career counseling, and 12 step program induction are common in these programs.

12-step icon12-Step

Their residential recovery community uses a 12-Step focus to structure and encourage peer support, personal growth and development. They believe this approach is very effective for preventing relapse and for helping residents develop the skills and resources to live a successful and substance-free life. They require all residents to obtain a sponsor and to attend at least 4 AA/NA meetings per week. They also require residents to attend in-house relapse prevention groups, life skills classes and house meetings.

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Individuals in early recovery often require 24-hour clinical care in North Carolina. This supervised care typically includes medications to treat specific withdrawal symptoms, which vary based on the substance abused. For example, staff may provide sleep aids to treat insomnia in patients who are addicted to marijuana. For those overcoming a cocaine use disorder, anti-depressants may be prescribed to manage mood swings. Other medications may also be provided to treat addiction-related health issues.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

A medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive drugs and alcohol from your body. A team of licensed medical professionals will look after you 24/7 to monitor your health, help minimize discomfort, and provide medications if necessary to alleviate any withdrawal symptoms. This process is typically the first step in your recovery and may take around 5-7 days, although length will depend on your individual needs.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

There are many types of drug rehab in North Carolina. To receive treatment for addiction, you can choose from many inpatient and outpatient programs. Often, participants start with detox and work through a full continuum of care that continues with ongoing support for long-term recovery.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Counseling that applies dialectical behavior therapy teaches you coping skills to apply to your daily life. The focus is on intense emotions and developing coping mechanisms to manage them. Therapy sessions are a series of teaching lessons that help you develop these coping skills.

equine-therapy iconEquine Therapy

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

life-skills iconLife Skills

At Next Step Recovery, they are committed to helping adult men in early recovery develop and strengthen the life skills that will help them live substance free with a sense of purpose and joy. Their life skills classes set them apart from many relapse prevention programs and sober living homes. These classes prepare their residents for successful reintegration in the community by helping them strengthen important skills such as budgeting and money management, job-seeking, communication, time management, nutrition and healthy meal preparation.

recreational-therapy iconRecreational Therapy

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Nature offers some of the best recreation for body and soul; and Western North Carolina’s rugged mountains, lush forests, rivers and waterfalls are nature at its finest. Their state parks, national forests, Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Appalachian Trail provide limitless opportunities for substance-free recreation including hiking, mountain biking, camping, backpacking, rafting, fishing, rock climbing, outdoor sports and much more. Their Outdoor Adventure Program provides residents with numerous opportunities to heal and grow in nature.

Next Step was the first step towards a chaos free life. The staff was extremely welcoming and down to earth. Everything at Next Step is done with care, compassion and love. The home that I resided in was well maintained. The fellowship and camaraderie between the participants was palpable and genuine. I would recommend Next Step to the entire country!

Many claim to be special and rarely achieve it, Next Step attains this feat with humility. From intake to every staff member remembering your name you will be amazed and blessed to be in this truly special environment. Again 5 stars seems like a disservice as this is top notch.

After my last episode at the end of May 2023, I would spend seventeen days in Behavioral Health searching for where I would return to a recovery setting. The idea of doing recovery in Asheville as a NC native my whole life was very appealing to me but finding one that was financially viable and would stick isn't always easy. With the help of my father, and countless attempts, trial and error, and process of elimination, on the last day my dad was able to get a hold of the owner, Susan, on the phone and develop a plan of action to get me there. The next day on June 21st, 2023, I would arrive here to welcome and smiles. I abided by their rules, stayed in their recovery homes, completed the PHP and IOP classes, and followed their leveling system. Also all while receiving effective therapy and building relationships. I type here two days after turning 29 and I now have an apartment of my own in Asheville, a full time job, and a hold of my emotions - currently closing in on six months of clean time. Everybody's experience is their own, but this was and still is mine, for I still keep close contact with the program. The resources for whatever I needed were there to be advocated for and I was able to obtain the things I asked for, within reason. My best interest was always put first and i'm eternally grateful for how my life looks now. The cost isn't cheap on paper but the relationships and the things I have now are priceless.

Our experience with NSR began December 2021 when our son chose a place to begin his recovery. We put our son on a plane to Asheville and put him in the hands of Susan, her team, and the NSR community. In his time there, he learned responsibility, accountability and compassion for himself and others. He now has a new and much better path.

Next Step has contributed to a pivotal point in my brother's life. They took him into the house and the program with tender care, even when he was very anxious and ready to quit trying too soon, just after detox and raw on every level. They cared for him and provided education about sobriety, finances, nutrition, exercise, and companionship, among so many other things! Too numerous to count, truly. From the beginning, with Charles leading us through the details, and what to expect, to Terry and Juan and the house staff taking over his day to day and keeping him moving forward, it was an incredible and completely encompassing experience.Anytime I had a question or concern, someone was readily available to answer it, and had often already handled the anticipated situation before I even had time to worry about it for very long. It was astounding! We were cared for, he was cared for, and they taught us about how to take care of ourselves, too.The weekly family zoom meetings have been especially soothing, and constructive as we all seem to be in very similar boats, worried and enabling, confused and cautiously hopeful as we observe the process set up by Next Step. There isn't any way that my family could have done for him what Next Step did, even with the best of intentions. He has been returned to us a new and more whole person. He is confident in his path forward, is armed with much knowledge about his condition, and feels ready to step back into the world, his next step!Thank you, everyone at Next Step, for assisting in saving my brother's life. You have our eternal gratitude.

I attended Next Step Recovery for 6 months. I graduated with a great start on my Recovery. The staff and owner were very supportive and had my best interest at heart. I am still clean almost 18 months later and they still keep in contact with me. I would recommend Next Step to anyone serious about making the changes in their lives to recover from addiction.

I had the opportunity to stay at Next Step and do their IOP program in 2021, when I was at a very low point in my life. I was treated with dignity and respect the entire time, and built personal relationships with the staff. Many of the staff had been through Next Step themselves, and had years of sobriety. The owner, Susan cares about everyone dearly. Terry, the director, ran a tight ship, and was not afraid to tell me things that I did not want to hear. The thing is that I NEEDED to hear them, even if I did not want to. If you live at Next Step, you'll find that Clark is much more than just the "van driver", Jackson and Jashun are very understanding, and that Elliot is quite literally a life saver. Kevin led excellent Sunday hikes! The services advertised by Next Step Staff & website are all accurate, it was a rather intensive program without taking away my entire freedom. It felt like I was able to still integrate with the community a little while still following strict parameters. The houses & office are clean, and I felt safe there always. While my stay there was not the end of my struggle with addiction, I can say that it was the foundation of my recovery journey in Asheville. The IOP program was very helpful and the sober living benefited me a ton.
