About New Oakland Family Centers

New Oakland Family Centers is a healthcare network with several locations throughout the state of Michigan, including the Southgate Center located in Southgate, Michigan. They provide mental health treatment and services to children, adolescents and adults in the Downriver area. Their motto is The Right Care at The Right Time.

They have three different Face to Face Programs, a partial hospitalization program (PHP), a day program, and an intensive outpatient program (IOP).

The PHP program is done in a warm office environment for six hours per day for people with acute mental health issues. Most people are in this program for seven to 10 days with treatment three to five days per week. It’s a multidisciplinary approach to finding empowerment for both the patient and their family.

The day treatment program is for those aged three and up. They provide daily structured activities with therapeutic intervention for anyone experiencing severe emotional distress, Monday through Friday six hours per day. The main point of this program is to prevent or minimize the need for more extensive treatment.

The IOP is designed specifically for people battling with behavioral, emotional, and or other mental health problems, with co-occurring or secondary substance use disorder (SUD) or dual diagnosis.

Their general outpatient program is a comprehensive program that helps with recovery and wellness. It enables patients to function more successfully in everyday life. This program is broader and less strict than the others.

New Oakland also has a 24 hour Crisis Stabilization Service that’s managed by licensed mental health and nursing professionals. It’s a short term solution to inpatient psychiatric services that can be done with interventions onsite or over the phone.

They have intense individual and family counseling sessions or psychotherapy, assessments and psychiatric supervision, as well as other support from trained professionals as needed. They also provide ADHD assessments here and offer PHP treatment for eating disorders.

DO NOT bring your child to this place. Please listen to the negative reviews, other people are not lying when they say this place's Face-To-Face program is TERRIBLE. We were told a specific diagnosis for our child, and when I went to follow up with his pediatrician this place was like "nope, he was not diagnosed with that and we have no record of it." He was there for TEN days and nothing came of it. Not worth the time or the money - now we have to pay out of pocket at another office for testing that was promised to be done while he was there FOR TEN DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Please please listen to the terrible reviews. This place needs to be investigated.

This location needs to be investigated. They made me wait to get a psychiatrist appointment in order to get therapy. When I said I didn't want medication the psychiatrist said it had to still meet once a month. The 800# said that's not true, we could do just therapy. It's a 30 day wait now to get therapy. Meanwhile my son has wasted so much time he is in now in crisis. Nobody mentioned their crisis options either just said we have to wait. A Receptionist was rude when I said we didn't want medication.Promised call back from director but when called they didn't respond and it was dead air yet there's no issue with my phone. They keep calling and pretending they can't hear if they don't like you. I'm so upset by all of this and now my son and my mental health is 100% worse. If anyone there cares about this awful treatment im still waiting on that promised call back. I intend to file complaint with the state against this place due to the lies and disgusting treatment of this place at all since nobody cares about the lies. Some on phone are nice but majority need training on dealing with mental Health as they make it worse. please stay away

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Traditional outpatient services are the least restrictive means of treatment and may include individual, group, family and medication management focused treatment. These outpatient services are based on the client’s needs and may involve weekly, bi-weekly and/or monthly scheduled sessions.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
The New Oakland FACE to FACE Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) focuses on children, adolescents and adults with emotional, behavioral, and/or chemical abuse problems. It is less intensive and restrictive than the FACE to FACE partial day program, taking place on three non-consecutive days per week and lasting three hours per visit. It is a modified, less restrictive component of the FACE to FACE partial day programs, still featuring group, individual and family therapies that effectively deal with crisis, depression and conflict through the acquisition of social, interpersonal, communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills. With the New Oakland IOP, an individual continues to live at home and remain engaged in his or her own life, continuing to go to work or school while developing the skills he or she needs with the help and support of the program.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
While many people know it as "day treatment", a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers treatment during the day and allows you to live at home. PHP treatment typically requires a commitment of at least 20 hours of treatment every week, with a program duration that spans approximately 90 days. While commuting is necessary, some programs offer telehealth options. PHP treatment plans usually include relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
24-hour clinical care in Michigan is essential for certain phases of recovery treatment. During detox, many physical ailments related to the detox process can be lethal if not treated. Having medical staff available at all times provides the proper care for safe detox. Medications and other treatment can also make the process much more comfortable and bearable.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
During a medically supervised detox, addictive substances are removed from your body while under the 24/7 supervision of medical professionals in an inpatient environment. This is the safest way to wean your body off of addictive substances, since quitting alcohol or certain drugs (like opioids or benzodiazepines) can be dangerous if done on your own. The program typically lasts around 5-7 days, but is highly individualized depending on your needs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Michigan provides personalized treatment to help individuals break this cycle and regain control of their lives. Treatment methods are used in various levels of care, including inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, and standard outpatient treatment.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Michigan helps participants view challenges more clearly so they can respond to them in healthy ways. During a limited number of structured sessions, clients learn about and practice these changes to effectively address substance use and mental health disorders.

Addiction often involves intense situations and emotions. Dialectical behavior therapy helps you understand and regulate your emotions and better manage the situations that evoke those feelings. You'll receive mindfulness training and stress management training to cope more effectively with difficult emotions.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

During motivational interviewing, therapists express empathy, support self efficacy, and develop discrepancies. By using these techniques, therapists help clients reflect on their desires for change and understand why and how they should move forward with those changes.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Both internal and external factors can put stress on a relationship. Couples therapy helps you and your partner work through those stressors and find healthy ways to deal with challenges as they arise.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

I was skeptical about bringing my daughter here based of the reviews but I'm glad I didn't let them stop me! Putting her in the PHP program was the best decision I've made! Mariam was amazing, all the staff was great! I've seen such positive change in my daughter, she left smiling everyday. Today was her last day and she is sad about it but the positive impact new oakland left my daughter with is something I'll always be greatful for!

The DBT program @ this facility is amazing. My child has been attending here and seeing the DBT therapist named Fadra for over a year now. She is an amazing therapist and the first therapist out of a few that my child actually enjoys seeing and looks forward to the sessions. I also attend New Oakland for therapy and medication and I highly recommend it over The Guidence Center. New Oakland located in Southgate is a great place for mental services.

This place is a joke . Poor excuse for very much needed mental health facility. Do better! Todays world needs mental health care more than ever and you guys should be the first place to make a change in that. YOU DONT! The work from home doctors don t OBVIOUSLY WORK while at home because SHE can t even call the scripts in after talking to you. You gotta call back and let them know meds weren t called in and play games over and over . Btw it was supposed to be in person from day 1 we re past 2 years and never even met. Gone thru numerous med changes, numerous hospital stays, still never met and just filled whatever . . Therapist is much better than the doctor but not gonna say peaches n cream there either. Don t get calls back when needed and voicemails left. Very unprofessional. Not to mention they want to drug test my kid all the time and their doctor hasn t prescribed meds from not calling in months so why are you wanting to bill my insurance for drug screenings or even scream me you don t give me the meds in the first place?! Get it together people need help not more problems.

Honestly I can't recommend new Oakland enough. They've literally saved my life more times than I can count. They also have a lot of wonderful and varied programs, the day program actually taught me what boundaries where in an objective manner. Some people would say it's common sense, but common sense is always dependant on how you're raised. Everyone has always been nothing but good and kind to me. It's always appreciated.
