About New Oakland Family Centers

New Oakland Family Centers, in Flint, Michigan, provides outpatient mental and behavioral health care for youth and adults, including crisis intervention and patience stabilization and partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), general outpatient (OP), and aftercare programming. Dedicated services are available for children, adolescents, young adults, seniors, pregnant and postpartum women, and persons with co-occurring addiction and mental illness. Their programs are designed to offer an alternative to hospitalization for clients requiring high-level supervision and support.

Their partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs are designed for clients who require high-level supervision and support, including those stepping down from inpatient treatment, those in early recovery, and those at an elevated risk of relapse. Clients experiencing a mental health or addiction emergency may be stabilized in a clinical setting. Medical and mental health assessments, personalized care planning, and comprehensive case management are included for all clients. Clients also engage in intensive individual, group, and family counseling drawing on proven psychotherapeutic modalities. The program promotes clients’ sustained sobriety through robust, recovery-focused life skills training addressing topics such as coping, self-care, and relapse prevention.

Their general outpatient (OP) and aftercare services ensure a complete continuum of care aligned with clients’ evolving needs and may include step-down support, 12 step program facilitation, and referrals for additional medical, mental health, and social service programs.

New Oakland Family Center is accredited by CARF and accepts private insurance, military Insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and self-pay. Financial aid is available.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Traditional outpatient services are the least restrictive means of treatment and may include individual, group, family and medication management focused treatment. These outpatient services are based on the client’s needs and may involve weekly, bi-weekly and/or monthly scheduled sessions.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

The New Oakland FACE to FACE Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) focuses on children, adolescents and adults with emotional, behavioral, and/or chemical abuse problems. It is less intensive and restrictive than the FACE to FACE partial day program, taking place on three non-consecutive days per week and lasting three hours per visit. It is a modified, less restrictive component of the FACE to FACE partial day programs, still featuring group, individual and family therapies that effectively deal with crisis, depression and conflict through the acquisition of social, interpersonal, communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills. With the New Oakland IOP, an individual continues to live at home and remain engaged in his or her own life, continuing to go to work or school while developing the skills he or she needs with the help and support of the program.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

While many people know it as "day treatment", a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers treatment during the day and allows you to live at home. PHP treatment typically requires a commitment of at least 20 hours of treatment every week, with a program duration that spans approximately 90 days. While commuting is necessary, some programs offer telehealth options. PHP treatment plans usually include relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

24-hour clinical care in Michigan is essential for certain phases of recovery treatment. During detox, many physical ailments related to the detox process can be lethal if not treated. Having medical staff available at all times provides the proper care for safe detox. Medications and other treatment can also make the process much more comfortable and bearable.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

During a medically supervised detox, addictive substances are removed from your body while under the 24/7 supervision of medical professionals in an inpatient environment. This is the safest way to wean your body off of addictive substances, since quitting alcohol or certain drugs (like opioids or benzodiazepines) can be dangerous if done on your own. The program typically lasts around 5-7 days, but is highly individualized depending on your needs.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in Michigan provides personalized treatment to help individuals break this cycle and regain control of their lives. Treatment methods are used in various levels of care, including inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, and standard outpatient treatment.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Michigan helps participants view challenges more clearly so they can respond to them in healthy ways. During a limited number of structured sessions, clients learn about and practice these changes to effectively address substance use and mental health disorders.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Addiction often involves intense situations and emotions. Dialectical behavior therapy helps you understand and regulate your emotions and better manage the situations that evoke those feelings. You'll receive mindfulness training and stress management training to cope more effectively with difficult emotions.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

During motivational interviewing, therapists express empathy, support self efficacy, and develop discrepancies. By using these techniques, therapists help clients reflect on their desires for change and understand why and how they should move forward with those changes.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Both internal and external factors can put stress on a relationship. Couples therapy helps you and your partner work through those stressors and find healthy ways to deal with challenges as they arise.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

This place is a joke. On my first visit there was a problem with a staff member crying. On top of that the therapist I was suppose to be seeing left for the day, while I was sitting there waiting to be seen.

They are not that bad, but what they definitely should improve is their customer service, because it's unprofessional and many of their workers are rude. However, therapy is useful.

First off - I was literally LOCKED inside by an employee. She didn't check to see if anyone was still in the office??? I had just finished a HORRIBLE therapy session where my therapist said "OH GOOD!" when i expressed my mom had passed. Also, then sat on FB messenger messaging her daughter then proceeded to talk about herself for 10+ minutes. Then ended the session by gossiping and trash talking her peers.... Very weird and UNPROFESSIONAL. This was my first time trying therapy

i was in the php program and it was terrible. The supervisor Carly was extremely rude and had a bad attitude. We never learned any coping skills, we were just bombarded with pointless worksheets. No group therapy went on in group therapy. You had one on one therapy but you shared a therapist with other people in your group. So my therapist would ask me about drama with other teens instead of talking about my problems. it s overall extremely unorganized and the staff is quite rude.

I went to the partial hospitalization program for 9 days. I was in the kids/teens room and it was terrible. The woman running the group therapy (Lisa) treated everyone rudely. She would often get into long arguments with kids (specifically the ones who were in there for anger/violence) and make the environment feel tense and uncomfortable. There was no therapy, we spent the whole day filling out and reading papers on mental health. I would go home with 10-30 papers a day, barely any of which were helpful. It felt like a boring, stressful classroom rather than group therapy. At the slim chance that we did talk about our own issues, Lisa would barely care. Kids in there for self harm would be told "you really have to stop doing that" or "hurting yourself won't work" and nothing else. She didn't even try to help, and was disliked heavily by everyone in there.I really want to rate this place higher, since my outpatient therapist is really kind and good at her job, along with all the other staff. But I can't ignore how terrible the partial hospitalization program was. I just feel bad for everyone in the program with me that had to suffer through it.

Their Technician who was supposed to watch the kids literally kept bullying another kid, and demanding that we teach. They give us paperwork and yet didn't explain, help. They kicked me out first day for calling out their problems and for having a suicidal ideation attack there. The Technician has severely damaged my mental health and others, and they do not do their job properly. NEVER take yourself and your kids here. My family counselors husband, in the adult area has also been bulled here. This place is horrendous. One bad worker that hangs out with kids won't take liability for their damage, bullying, and harm on other kids mental health and treats children like property.
