About NC Brookhaven Behavioral Health

NC Brookhaven Behavioral Health is an outpatient mental health clinic in Asheville, North Carolina. Treatment for addiction is included in their services for those who need it. While they serve a general population, people with developmental and intellectual disabilities are welcome.

The services you can get from them include counseling and psychiatric med management. They have some other services too. Their assisted family living program is designed to support people with intellectual disabilities to live in the community. Their assertive community treatment program helps people with serious mental illness live in the community. Both these programs are accredited by CARF.

If you need a higher level of care such as residential rehab, their staff will refer you to a nearby facility. Where appropriate, they work to keep people in the community by getting them adequate support.

They champion the rights of people with mental illness by supporting advocacy agencies, like the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

They have many positive reviews from people who felt they received effective treatment from them.

Dr. Lowe has no business seeing mental health patients. She meets with you for 10 minutes, and barely has a relationship with me as a patient. I told her I didn t want to be on certain meds anymore and it fell on deaf ears. She also somehow always managed to mess up my scripts and I would have to make multiple phone calls. I just quit making appointments. 5 months go by and I for a call today from her secretary asking for a $30 copay I owe. I should have told her to send it to collections. I have PTSD, I would think a mental health doctor would be concerned about a patient and would have checked on me in the last few months to see if I m ok. No just wanted her money. I ve had a lot of psychiatrists and she is prob one of the worst. Avoid.

I am writing this review on behalf of my partner. We are alcoholics in remission. If it were not for the caring and patient staff of NC Brookhaven, we would not be alive today. Many staff members have contributed to my partner's abstinence from alcohol, but we really would like to praise his QP(Qualified Professional) Queen. Not only has she been in the suck with us during violent drunken rages, she has demonstrated professionalism, patience, confidence, and wisdom in diffusing very nasty situations.Everyone needs a Queen in their lives, and we are so grateful we have found ours!

Accepted Insurance

NC Brookhaven Behavioral Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I have experienced quite a journey as a native to Asheville Finding a good fit for a medical team. I should have already written this review. NC Brookhaven By FAR has been the best Treatment Center Experience I've had and that says alot considering I began going here "Virtually at the Height of Covid".Dr. Bryner has been the BEST Psychiatrist I've had in the city hands down. I say this because he is very empathetic to his patients needs. He understands we know our bodies and in conjunction with his expertise he is willing to make sure you are comfortable with your medication management.I am certain this is his calling and all I can do it say Thankyou. If your new to the area and adjusting this is a great place! Also the Ladies at the Front desk are polite punctual and great communicators at one point I lost my meds to a house fire and Dr. Jay and staff were immediately on it. It's so hard these days in the day of technology to find people who have a good balance of empathy and professionalism. Considering your already here to find resolutions.Godbless whoever reads this.Find a place that fits you don't try and fit the place Lesson Learned

What other people are saying is accurate, I experienced "lost payments" non responsive staff, and if you want a PA that's managed by a kickback doctor who has had 3 different actions taken against her by the medical board then this is your place....CMSDATA.GOV to see what your treatment will be. Save yourself the time,

Jay and NC Brookhaven have literally saved my life. They took me on a journey from suicide attempts to living a day at a time. I am blessed to have them in my life. Anyone with suicidal thoughts or depression should call NC Brookhaven and their caring staff. It could be a call that saves your life, it has mine. You're not alone in this.

Staff don't return phone calls from providers. Clients lose services due to improper handling of documentation. Clients aren't supported adequately, including neglect in making proper referrals. I wouldn't want a family member using this service.
