They actually care about poor people/the underclass . Social justice happens here , its not overnight they help you help yourself . They actually listen. A safe space for the most part , you can find a mixture of people who come here , they know in this space they will be heard . My local clinic is not as welcoming as Nathaniel is , and I think the reason why is Nathaniel is in the heart of Harlem, they aren't wimps and bougie about certain clients like other places further down town would be . They are NOT judgemental of anyone no matter your socio economic status , drug user , handicap or anything !!! Keep this space operating for the people , and by the people , big up the workers !

Updated Review !!! Their service is ok definitely needs improvement. I went a few months ago and bought 2 pairs of glasses so I have 2 different point of views and was served by the black lady with dreads. Let me start by saying she is mainly good with customer service. I have mixed feelings about how professional they are. I was satisfied with the the services she provides at first. I ve witnessed people have complaints about when she sold them or their insurance a pair of glasses and never recieved them. For example an older man was in there one day recently he was waiting nearly 1 month for his frames and never received it. She tried to justify the reason that it wasn t mandatory and the insurance paid for them. I was looking at the man in confused way because my first frames that my insurance paid for took less than 2 weeks and were a success but then the ones I originally picked and still wish I had because I paid for them were at the moment waiting to be cut and will be ready on Monday because they are in the basement I asked would I recieve a phone call or text reminding me or confirming that I can pick them up After 3 weeks since the last time I went there and 3 months later since she sold me the frames which was complicated since the 2nd time I went. ( the second time I went there she showed me my frames and said that I need to purchase the lense and she updated the price that were so call official which I told her I wanted to just cancel because I had a bad gut feeling so she adjusted the price and showed me how good the frames looked on me to make it seem appetizing and my man sent me 40$ cash app to go on top of the 50$ Original price.) She told me the official price would of been 140$ and that she can give me a deal for 90$. So today ( the day of the original review) I called because I have an adult prom coming up because I never went to prom and this will be my first. I was on hold for at least 10 minutes and then when I spoke to one of the workers they said that it wasn t there and they were going to purchase it.Then I asked transferred to the woman I mainly spoke to which I mentioned her description earlier in this review she claims that my glasses weren t there now and they can t find it they can t buy it and she sent me pictures of other alternative frames which I don t even like and I asked her for my money back because she was at fault and she offered to give me only give back 40$. I then went in to pick out a frame and the only cute frames in my opinion were the all black frames. My original frames were half blue and clear. I m comfortable with these frames and get a lot of compliments. My personal overall experience is that they are nice and professional in person if you know how to professionally advocate for yourself and make an appointment although it s walk-in acceptable Also if you are willing to being open minded and patient. This review was finalized on 08/19/23

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy meant to be short-term and comprehensive. It was intended to help clients become more self-sufficent and move forward without the need for expensive, ongoing therapy. It includes an emotional self-help method called “rational self-counseling,” the purpose of which is to give clients all the skills needed to handle future emotional issues by themselves, or with significantly less professional help.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Stopped coming to this place. I had an amazing therapist at first but when she left it took about 6 months to be matched with a new therapist and when I was this therapist made me feel even worse constantly playing devils advocate and didn t help me work through any of my trauma. If you get referred here run. They switch psychs & doctors on a monthly basis

I wouldn t suggest the Nathaniel Clinic or CASES to anyone based on my recent experience. I was referred to them by my primary doctor in September 2021, then had an intake a month later. I was told someone would reach out to me and tell me which therapist I was assigned to. No one contacted me. After multiple attempts to find out what happened, who I would be assigned, and why no one communicated properly, I am left with no help three months into the process. I called and emailed them multiple times and no one has followed up to answer my questions. I would give them zero stars if I could.

The people of color working at the Nathaniel Clinic are helpful, and even some of the caucasians can be helpful. The wait time for services can be annoying, but really I dont have many complaints. Dr. Wan and Dr. Weiss are cool. Plus it is cool to see doctors and nurses of color working and making coin. Ann the nurse for Fact 1 is helpful too. Really Cases Nathaniel Clinic can be cool. Give them a chance.
