Medical briefcase icon Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Clients undergoing treatment at an outpatient rehab reside in their own homes and engage in counseling and recovery education sessions in the evening, at night, or on the weekend. This ensures clients' access to care while working, caregiving, or attending school. Outpatient treatment is often the next level of care for clients stepping down from inpatient care, though some clients enroll immediately after completing detox. Many programs offer medication assisted treatment (MAT) for those in alcohol or opioid recovery.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

aftercare iconAftercare

Rehab aftercare programs provide continuing care for clients in an advanced phase of recovery, including those who have completed detox and intensive inpatient treatment. These clients typically have already engaged in many hours of addiction counseling and recovery education. Drug rehab aftercare supports clients in maintaining their sobriety at home, in the workplace, and in the community. Case managers and care teams advise clients on the resources they may need to promote their sustained sobriety.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a structured form of therapy in which the client, family and therapist work together as partners to assess, define, and treat problems. Clients and families learn to examine and respond in new ways to the elements that maintain anxiety and OCD-related problems, including their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. A key component of the treatment programming – the unique and specialized evidenced-based component of Mountain Valley Treatment Center. ERP is a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) modality designed to provide gradual exposure and habituation to what causes a particular anxiety or compulsion. As psycho-education, this group therapy component of exposure therapy supports the individual therapy in which a resident is participating.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical refers to merging of opposing concepts. In DBT, the main dialectic is between the concepts of acceptance and change. Emotional Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness skills are taught to empower residents and teach them how to implement change. DBT is a form of therapy that utilizes a structured curriculum to develop skills in the following areas: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

equine-therapy iconEquine Therapy

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

As a short-term residential treatment center, Mountain Valley offers multiple group therapy sessions per week in addition to the Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) groups that occur twice per week. Thematic Group Therapy includes Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, Expressive Arts, and DBT skills.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Each Treatment Program Resident of Mountain Valley Treatment Center receives three individual therapy sessions per week with their primary therapist. Psychoeducation is designed to enhance client and family knowledge about anxiety and OCD.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family therapy occurs weekly via VZ, phone or on-site. Review of a resident’s multi-disciplinary treatment plan occurs weekly.

Mountain Valley has truly been a lifesaver to our family! It is a special place made up of special people who have both the expertise and the caring hearts to support both their residents and their families during a very difficult time. They were able to turn my daughter s bright light back on that had been dimmed due to anxiety and depression. They educated her to help her understand what she was going through, gave her coping skills for when she experiences her highs and lows, and helped her to learn strategies and routines that allow her to maintain a healthier lifestyle. They also helped and supported our family to learn what we could do to better support her. In connecting with the other residents and forming incredibly close friendships, for the first time, our daughter didn t feel alone in what she was going through. The therapists and staff at Mountain Valley are unmatched in the way they care about and connect with the residents. My daughter really trusted them and finally had hope that she could get better. On top of all that, she loved being there and had so much fun in all their activities. I am forever grateful to Mountain Valley!!!!

This is my daughter s second half of her review she ran out of space because she had too many great things to say!! (look under anonymous )Every staff member becomes a mentor, every resident becomes a sibling, every animal becomes your new best friend (the sheep are fluffy dogs, the donkeys are so sweet, the chickens are annoying little cutie pies, the rabbits are calm hoppy buddies, and the goats are adorable monkeys). Mountain Valley is a one-of-a-kind milieu it s truly a family. My friends from MVTC are some of the best people I will ever have the pleasure of meeting. Months could go by without contact, but I know they re always there for me like nothing s changed. The work at Mountain Valley can be difficult, and it s the most amazingly transformative time of your life. My happy place is Mountain Valley. To know that there is such an incredible place existing so full of empathetic, kind people gives me hope for the future of this world.Hearing about the troubled teen industry, I d gone into treatment terrified of abuse, neglect, and more. I feel heartbroken for people who experience those things, and I also feel heartbroken for a suffering teenager who lets those stories stop them from going to Mountain Valley. It scares me to think of where I would be (if I would even still be here) without the people who saved me at Mountain Valley. The love and joy MVTC brings me is immeasurable, incomparable. I wish everyone in the world could experience Mountain Valley, because being so seen, loved, accepted, heard, and genuine is so rare in this world.Every single person at Mountain Valley is changing the world. I owe them everything and have so much gratitude for each and every one of them. If you are reading this and considering Mountain Valley, know that treatment is difficult, scary, and not linear. AND know that out there in Plainfield, New Hampshire, there s a group of people that would be so happy to welcome you to their family as you shine your brightest light into the world.

I don t have the proper words to express how much Mountain Valley means to me. I would give it ten stars out of five if that were possible.By May 2023, my parents were scared and confused, unsure of how to move forward. My OCD and anxiety had spiraled out of control. Despite continuing a perfect attendance at school to match my nearly perfect Junior year grades, I had never been more unhealthy. I was diagnosed with ARFID and lost over 10 pounds. Eventually, my therapist told my parents that simple outpatient treatment was not enough: residential treatment was the best option.I was upset and felt betrayed surely I was not that bad and hadn t everyone been saying that my outpatient therapists knew what they were doing? I (reluctantly) took a call with MVTC admissions and showed them the bubbly facade I was an expert at. By a stroke of fortune, they had availability for me. At the time, I was unimpressed and furious that my junior year would go up in flames after all my hard work.Being the understanding people that they are, Mountain Valley staff allowed me to finish up my last month at school before checking in (while this option is not always the best or what s recommended, I had enough support at home and so little time left that it ended up working out).I arrived at Mountain Valley on May 30, 2023. Admittedly, I had bought into some parts of the idea, making collage posters for my room and downloading music onto my Mighty. My biggest concerns going in were the food, the roommate situation, and if this was even going to work. To me, playing with farm animals and doing random art seemed too lighthearted to fight the dark demons I had inside. Well, little did I know that I had just entered into the most incredible place on this planet. Having to leave after 87 days was bittersweet and I longed to return even as I thrived back in the real world. To address my initial concerns, the food was amazing and diverse. The chef was kind and loved to take recommendations. We baked or cooked sometimes during modules, and there were always snacks available or leftovers if I didn t want a particular dish. And the roommates. I was scared that they would hate me or think I was weird or judge my OCD. None of those things were present anywhere at Mountain Valley. The staff tried to match roommates up by personality while also keeping a minimal age gap, but every single person eventually bonded with their roommates. Of course, in such an accepting, loving community, it was nearly impossible for anyone to have animosity or judgment. I still talk to my roommates on Facetime or text often, as they ve become my most trusted confidantes.Thirdly, the treatment itself. The therapists are out-of-this-world. They aren t robotic or working against you; truly, they re on your team and want to work to help you succeed. They are very human, and living in a residential setting brings out that side of everyone. You see your therapist in very serious conversations in their office, and you also see them playing capture the flag on a sunny day or getting lunch or when they take you off campus for a special treat, just because. There s no shame in therapy, whether it be family, group, or individual. You are living in a healing environment where everyone around you has your best interests at heart. That s how doing random art helps: you get to explore your identity, embrace your inner child, and live in a safe space.(this is only half of my post; the character limit was exceeded because I have too many great things to say!)

I view my life as having 3 chapters. Being a kid is the first bit. Around 3rd grade I started to get anxiety and I view 3rd grade through 17 when I came here as the most difficult part of my life. Then this place gave me the tools to thrive and these past few years while hard have been some of the best of my life thanks to the help I received here. This place gave me a tool box of skills. Some I found rather unhelpful. But I had to figure out which tools fit my problems and utilize those. I cannot recommend this place enough.

My child suffered from debilitating anxiety and had reached a point where she struggled to attend school or leave the house, and this caused her to become increasingly isolated and depressed. Seeking treatment at Mountain Valley was the best thing our family could have done for many reasons. First, the professionals at Mountain Valley are experts at supporting youth as they do the hard work of learning to live with their anxiety so that it does not interfere with what they want for themselves in their own lives. Second, the team at Mountain Valley has truly created a welcoming, nurturing community for residents that creates the foundation for the work and that continues after graduation. My child and I just attended the yearly reunion for the second time, and she could not wait to connect with friends and staff and to be on campus again. Third, Mountain Valley supports the parents who are on this difficult journey with their children, both during and after treatment. They have an alumni parent community that feels like a family, with regular support group meetings where I know I can always bring my questions and struggles and offer support to other parents. In short, my experience has been that the professionals at Mountain Valley care deeply about the youth and families they serve and are always ready to offer support and celebrate successes.

Mountain Valley changed my life. Mountain Valley helped me achieve a level of progress and maturity that I could never have anticipated across my 7 some odd years of avoidance. I arrived to MV at 18 years old in January of 2024, and graduated on April Fools Day of that same year. In the span of only three months I had learned more about myself, my anxiety, and the world around me than I could have fathomed in just the few months before MV.I joined an alumni panel at my former high school after my MV graduation. Being back there reminded me of the lonely kid who hid behind a computer screen, the kid who wouldn t go outside for fear of having a medical emergency, the kid I no longer was. After the panel was over my parents got a call from the principal. She was very ecstatic in telling them how little she recognized me. She told them that it was as if the awkward kid she saw just a few months prior had matured before her eyes into a 25 year old man.Beyond the growth I achieved at MV, were experiences gained. MV was one of the most fun times I ve had my whole life. All of those memories I have, both good and bad, I look upon fondly. They have helped me become who I am. The friends I made will always hold a special place in my heart, along with the staff who helped me through some of my toughest challenges. Trust me, the worst stage of MV isn t your arrival, it s when you re finally ready to leave. The chicken is my son btw. His name is Ivar. Be careful around him. I graduated before I could teach him any manners.

Alex, thank you so much for your thoughtful review. You worked so hard at Mountain Valley and should be so proud of yourself for how much you've grown and evolved. Mountain Valley changed my life in the best way I could have ever hoped for. The staff are great, the food is great, they are very organized (VERY organized), and the therapy is outstanding. I came to Mountain Valley with basically no hope, since I had done so much ERP and treatment beforehand. I left thankful for everything this place blessed me with - New friends, new skills, memories, and capability I had never had before. I entered Mountain Valley almost unable to finish high school and since I left, I have graduated and am going to college! And my OCD does not control me anymore. I am so thankful for this place because my life with OCD having the power was unbearable.

Mountain Valley Treatment Center provided a life changing experience for my daughter. It set her on the road to healing and provided her with a tool kit to manage the things that were robbing her of living fully. The staff is a remarkable group of people dedicated to the mission of helping the young people entrusted to them. The psychoeducation provided to me as a parent allowed me to understand with what my child was dealing and taught how to help her. Mountain Valley gave her joy back.

I wrote a review before, but I would like to give an updated review after some introspection.I was sent to Mountain Valley (MV) by force in 2019 due to a panic disorder. While the fundamentals of exposure therapy were taught to me, they used exposure therapy to manipulate me into unfair situations. Boarding school was forced upon me as the only viable option for after treatment. Even though there was still a slight possibility I could go home, they made me research boarding schools several times and even fill out an application just a week before my discharge date. Luckily, my parent allowed me to go home. MV prides itself in nuanced, individual treatment plans. However, almost everyone I stayed with was sent away to therapeutic boarding school to practice their skills afterward. These schools work similarly to this program with little contact to the outside world. This was devastating for the kids who had already transitioned from long-time programs such as wilderness therapy. It seems this plan of keeping residents separate from the outside world is the offspring of previous abusive mental institutions from earlier history.MV also used exposure therapy in a way to promote its center. One of my assigned exposures was to post a photo of the MV logo on my social media. I watched as multiple other residents were assigned to leave 5-star reviews on Google, as well. I don t think it s fair to assign these exposures when they don t therapeutically benefit the residents at all. On top of this, when asked why there were so many 1-star reviews on Google, the director at the time responded saying that it was just kids who didn t want to be there. My experience with individual therapy was insulting. I reported years worth of s*xual abuse that I had not come forward about and we only spent one session talking about it. My therapist said she would rather work on my anxiety. She also refused to diagnose me with a phobia that I have dealt with my entire life. Any time I disagreed with something she was saying, she would note that I complained about it. It was not an empathetic approach in the slightest.I experienced multiple unprofessional accounts with staff at MV. There were several times when resident safety was not taken into account. Such as the time a staff member made a nut-allergy resident hold a bag of seeds that may contain peanuts. Another time, the staff left me alone overnight with just a single male staff member even though they had knowledge of my fear of men due to the abuse I previously suffered. On top of this, the staff consistently made jokes surrounding my phobia (vomit) with no regard for my sensitivity surrounding it.Most of the planned activities (which a lot are actually just winged by untrained staff members) are not therapy-based. You will be forced to hike and partake in fitness even if you are not an active person. You will be punished for missing any module and threatened with the missed activity setting back your treatment. If you do not go to fitness every morning at 7 am, you will have to go to bed earlier than all the other residents.A few years after MV, I ended up with a completely different diagnosis of autism which explained my panic disorder. Autism is a diagnosis often missed in women, so I do not blame MV for this. However, the treatment of my anxiety provided by MV does not fit how I go about managing my mental health now.Overall, treatment at MV has traumatized me. I still have nightmares about being stuck in treatment, with no control over my next move, almost 4 years later. If you are considering sending your child to any inpatient facility, please think twice and look at other options. Breaking Code Silence (an organization) has a list of alternatives on their website.
