I was a student at Midwest Academy for a full 10 months. In the past, I had been through several behavioral health facilities and none had worked. When my legal guardian sent me to Midwest Academy, I was very optimistic and hopeful that I would receive the help that I needed. I lived in the state of GA and traveled all the way to Keokuk Iowa. When I first got there, I had several rules I had to learn. Some of the rules declined my creativity, things such as not being able to draw, sing, dance, or even speak any language other than English. I also found out that I would not be able to play the piano which was a major deal for me since I had been playing for 12 years at the time. I knew that all of these activities were great coping skills for me and that those were the things that kept me alive an just barely holding on. There was a thing called the "merit system" that let you earn points to "level up". The higher the level you were, the more privaledges you got. There were so many ridiculous rules that felt impossible to follow, therefore making nearly impossible to earn points. I was often put in confinement, also called Out of school suspension. I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, pickles, raisins, and a fruit with milk or water for every single meal. I was often placed there for voicing my own opinion and wanting to express my own emotions. The rooms were nearly prison cells, small, dimly lit, filthy, and concrete with closed in doors. You were to wear shorts and short sleeves with no shoes or socks, even in the winter when there was no heat or ventilation. Recent phycologists I have been to state that my stay at Midwest Academy was truly traumatic, simply based off the information I gave. Now, there is a reason why it was shut down and under investigation. It was my biggest nightmare and I plan to press charges.

I was a resident of MWA for 15 months. I got out about 6 months ago, and I'm still trying to get back to normal. I know some people need help with their kids, but this is not the answer. It's not worth the constant abuse and degradation that goes on here. The staff are unqualified and only treat this as a regular day job. Thank God this place is shut down now.

Hi my name is Grace Riordan and I was at Midwest Academy from October 2013 until December 2014. I can honestly say that those were the worst fourteen months of my life. I was tricked into going by my dad. He convinced me that i was a "normal" boarding school. I don't blame him for tricking me into going there because he didn't know what else to do, and he also had no idea how horribly I would be treated there. In my life I have gone through some pretty traumatizing experiences. I was sexually abused when I was seven, watched my mom die of cancer when I was 13, and I was raped when I was 15. I have struggled with alcohol and drug addiction since I was 12 years old, and my dad knew that I needed to get help. When I got to Midwest Academy I was shocked. The looks on the girls' faces- I can't even begin to describe them. Acne and weight gain/weight loss because of all of the stress. Bags under their eyes from not sleeping and they were so pale from not being able to go outside. And the sadness in their eyes genuinely scared me. While I was there I was put in OSS 17 times, sometimes for weeks at a time. I was forced to carry out the daily routine and even participate in P.E. while I was having benzo withdrawals. (I should have had some type of detox, because I could have had seizures and died.) I was put in Blessing hopital for two weeks after a couple of attempts at suicide. (I suffer from depression, anxiety, and bi-polar depression.) I had an eating disorder when I was younger and when I stopped eating there they threatened to shove a feeding tube down my throat instead of giving me proper therapy. There were rats too. You could hear them in the walls at night, and sometimes there were some running around on the cafeteria floor! PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO MIDWEST ACADEMY I AM BEGGING YOU. The reviews of people who say that it was not actually abusive are brainwashed by the crazy rules and the terrible treatment they received-they are sick.

Addiction Treatments

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Iowa is available in many formats. A variety of inpatient and outpatient options provide programs that are tailored to individual needs, making recovery possible for everyone.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.

Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

1st, Let me say this I am a parent of a Midwest Academy Graduate. My child was a drug addict, run away, and a pathological liar. He attempted suicide, was in acute behavioral care 3 times and was about to be adjudicated to a youth prison for continued severer defiance to all authority, after we hired 3 different mental health providers, and followed the public health system recommendations to the letter. we chose Midwest Academy. ALL the students hate it there. That is because the school holds them accountable for their actions. I have personally been to the facility and toured it several times. The "isolation boxes" are small interior rooms well lit with open doors. Students were told to behave or stay in the room. Similar to a child in time out. There is a sheet of expectations and consequences each student must learn and understand. Students gain privileges with each positive and learn that acting in a respectful manner. The program lasts about a year and it changed the lives of all my family members. Ben Trane is also one of the kindest, most intelligent people I have ever met and cares more about these kids than some of their parents do. I saw families from all places, social backgrounds and races, CEO's, teachers, nurses, small business owners, factory workers etc. all with one common goal . Helping their child navigate the difficult road to adulthood. I also saw the results of uncommitted youth taking the "exit plan" 1 drug overdose death, one returned to addiction, I met a lovely former student at the hampton inn very polite and had nothing negative to say about the school. Any consequence the student is self imposed. and they know it ahead of the action. Don't judge this type of school unless you have been there. The news media is at best semi accurate. Thank You

The news on the recent actions by the FBI and other authorities is concerning. I'm a lawyer with long involvement in issues around abuse, education, disabilities and civil rights. Hopefully, questions about accountability and others will be answered soon. I've published on restraint -- "Human Services Restraint: Its Past and Future," in a journal of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

This facility is privately owned, so they can do whatever they want without having to adhere to state rules for educational or therapeutic facilities. They can have "therapists" and "teachers" that don't have any credentials at all. Don't believe the fake reviews about how "good" it is for your child. Do your own research, and learn about the criminal charges of child abuse and sexual molestation that are currently pending.

No licensed educators or formal training. Gained absolutely nothing from this facility. Parents are still paying the tab, ten years later.

Wonderful place! They deal with problematic children just the way I dealt with the Jews. Although their final solution wasn't like meine, I still admire their style.

You are sending your child to hell if you send him or her here.

I feel so bad for all the people abused and tortured at this school. It's painfully obvious that the staff are the ones leaving fake positive comments about the school. The owners and staff need to be prosecuted and sent to their own boxes in prison.
