About Tomball VA Clinic

The Tomball VA Clinic is an outpatient facility in Tomball, Texas, in the Houston area. It has a strong addiction recovery program along with a wide range of other healthcare services like internal medicine, chiropractics, optometry, neurology and more. As a VA center, they serve members of the military and veterans. They can help the families of military members and veterans too.

As an outpatient clinic, this facility has personalized outpatient care for drug and alcohol addiction. They offer individual therapy and group therapy to help you understand your addiction and learn strategies for sobriety. Since they have a full mental health and behavioral health department, they can also treat other conditions that might go along with your addiction like PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, and others.

It’s important to note that even though this particular location is outpatient, the VA has an extensive addiction recovery program. So if you are a better fit for inpatient or residential rehab, your care coordinator will help to connect you with a VA center that has what you need.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient Rehab

Inpatient rehab programs are geared toward clients in early recovery. They also provide intensive support for clients in crisis and those at an increased relapse risk. Clients receive housing and meals while in inpatient care, allowing them to focus solely on their recovery. Most programs prioritize addiction counseling but may draw on various psychotherapeutic modalities, including CBT, DBT, RBT, trauma therapy, and motivational interviewing. Life skills training and holistic therapies are also common in inpatient care.

aftercare iconAftercare

Rehab aftercare programs are based on a model of continuing care and the premise that recovery is a life-long process requiring ongoing client support. Many rehab aftercare services include outpatient care, but clients often continue to receive support after being discharged from formal treatment. Case managers and care teams typically collaborate with clients to design their long-term care plan, which may include peer coaching, career counseling, and 12 step program induction, among other services.

12-step icon12-Step

12 step programs promote participants' sustained sobriety through rigorous and ongoing peer coaching and personal spiritual growth. Participants routinely attend 12 step meetings, which are available multiple times per day, 365 days per year in most communities. This ensures that those in recovery have prompt access to the structure and support they need when they need it. These programs use spiritual precepts to address the root causes of addiction and encourage compassion, self-awareness, forgiveness, accountability, and acceptance.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Ridding the body of harmful, addictive substances, also known as detoxification, is usually the first phase of recovery. Those going through medically assisted detox can be administered medications by a team of medical professionals who are on-site 24/7 to provide different types of therapies that help mitigate withdrawal symptoms.

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

During rehab in Texas, you'll deal with underlying issues that contribute to addiction. By addressing these challenges and learning healthy ways to cope with them, you'll develop strategies that help you live a drug-free lifestyle.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a trauma focused therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to help you integrate disturbing memories. It is an evidence based approach that's widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating trauma and symptoms of PTSD. EMDR helps reframe negative beliefs that have been associated with trauma into positive ones.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Like every VA about 50% of the staff is kind and great. The other half makes the rest look bad.

I ve been apart of this clinic now for almost a year and overall my issues have been taken care of in as timely a manner as possible, I want to think. My issue is this is not the first time that something has happened in my care and I was not notified about it until I called. I understand that my care is ultimately my responsibility, but there should also be some type of accountability on the care team to communicate these types of things with so I know what needs to be done to fix the situation. If I m not knowing what s going on, I have no way of even knowing that there s an issue that requires my attention. Overall, like I said this a good clinic and I do believe that they are doing their best to get vets needs met.

It's crazy how nice everyone is. I mean some veterans come in looking for a fight, everyone is there to help. But please understand this, if you come in on a Monday, everyone that can't drive or have the luxury to get downtown waits to do a walkin on Monday so if you don't come to your appointment 30min early your spot might get taken if your not checked in, nothing has changed this has always been this way..this brings me to the people behind the counter, seriously the patients you have for some veterans, bravo..I've stepped in and had to explain that you don't just service us but your answering phone calls, setting appointments, and smiling while doing it regardless how someone thinks or feels it's really a nice place. So thank you. The doctors are cool and listen it's really nice.

Pleasantly surprised! I called to the clinic expecting to have an hour wait time on the phone, but after selecting 0 to speak to a real living person, I was greeted by a pleasant person within less than 1 minute.

If I could give it a negative rating I would. I hurt my back over the weekend (fell off a dock 5 ) and went to the Tomball VA oupatient clinic to get an xray. One of the nurse practitioners had me see a guy named LOPEZ. I guess he is a physician s assistant and he began to ask me questions as he was typing very fast. Lopez didn t even give me a moment to speak because he spoke so fast. I tried to talk but he never gave me an opportunity. I said, Lopez can you talk slower please. Lopez stood up and walked over to the door, opened it, and said he would leave it open so everyone could hear us speaking. 30 seconds later a VA cop pokes her head in the door and says hi to Lopez. I was so baffled and thought I wasn t being heard, I stood up and told him I was going to the ER, then walked out. This was my very first time going to this place since getting to 100%, and I m still in shock how this guy acted. I just wanted an x-ray to check my back out. Now I know how all the veterans feel. I ve only heard, and read stories like this until today. What a disgrace to treat people that way!
