outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare

When you complete a treatment program, aftercare offers the ongoing support you need for long-term recovery. Aftercare may be provided in the form of support groups, continued individual counseling, housing assistance, or alumni clubs. These supports help prevent relapse and encourage success as you return to your workplace and community.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Many rehab programs in Washington, DC begin with medically assisted detox. During this process, you will be supervised by clinical professionals and receive medications to relieve withdrawal symptoms and prevent physical complications. This provides a safer and more comfortable detox experience. The process usually takes five to seven days.

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

If you have become physically or psychologically dependent on any substance (addicted), this type of professional treatment program can help you break free.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

life-skills iconLife Skills

An important part of relapse prevention is the development of life skills. I made a pre-op appointment with my PCP, for 3:20pm and was told to arrive 30 minutes before time. Because I was unable to travel in my power chair, I chose to walk with my cane, from the garage to the 3rd floor Office in the POB. Upon arrival at 2:30pm, I was informed that my appointment was in the Internal Medicine Clinic on the 1st floor. Having trouble breathing from the trip to the 3rd floor, I then had to walk (slowly) to the elevator, go down to the 1st floor and very slowly walk to the other side to hospital to get to the clinic. By the time got there, I was so out of breath that I could barely talk about a whisper. I was still ahead of my appointment by 35 min., I checked in and told I would be next and to have a seat. Ten minutes before my appt., my name was called, I was asked my date of birth, then my name. The young said "Oh, this is not you (no one else in the waiting room responded when my last name called), so I returned to the waiting area. She comes and asked for my ID and went back inside and returned 10min later, with my correct info and took me to triage. She finished the triage, said I could stay in that room because of difficult breathing and walking and the Dr would be in. I asked if it was my PCP and she no because I was in the pre-op clinic and would seen by someone else. By now its 15 mins. after my appointment, she comes in to apologize that I had go back to waiting room because another patient, whose appointment was an hour before mine, had to be seen first. I was seen after 4pm and the Dr that finally came in asked why my procedure wasn't being done in the office instead the OR, which to me should not have been his concern. I finally got out of there after 5pm. First: I was not informed of the appt location. Second: I expected to see the PCP, I signed up/registered for, NOT a Resident or a Dr. who knows nothing about me or my history.Third: Something needs to change in the way appointments are scheduled. When I'm told to return in 3 months, the schedule is full and I have to wait 6 months.I have been using WHC for over 30 years and it has become very frustrating and stressful to try to get appointments, or to get a return a call from your Dr. instead of a nurse. I have stayed with MedStar because I like the fact that all of my Drs are in one location and have access to my medical records. I hope some changes/improvements can be made soon.
