About MedStar Harbor Hospital

MedStar Harbor Hospital’s behavioral health program is dedicated to treating mental health and substance use issues. They treat people of all ages with inpatient and partial hospitalization programs. Clients can also participate in general outpatient and integrated care programs. They provide culturally informed care. The behavioral health program is located in Baltimore, Maryland.

MedStar Harbor mental health services are focused on whole person healing and support. That means they focus not just on your symptoms but how they affect the physical areas of your health. Integrated care services allow your care team to collaborate directly with your primary care providers to keep everyone updated on your treatment plan.

I like the integrated care model because it makes things easier for you. Managing the comings and goings of your health and treatment can be difficult when things are going well. It’s even worse when you’re struggling, and anything that falls through the cracks could lead to incomplete care. You may find things are more consistent between providers when they are communicating with each other directly.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Designed for patients who are 18 years and older, struggling with any of the above conditions, and require 24- hour inpatient care. Their focus is on recovery and reintegration into the community. Using patient-and family-centered care, treatment plans are developed with input from and engagement of loved ones and caregivers, as well as community-based resources. The patient’s strengths provide the cornerstone of the treatment plan and drive treatment from admission to reintegration.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare

Clients receiving support in a rehab aftercare program typically partner with their case manager and care team to identify and access the services that best align with their recovery needs and goals. Rehab aftercare services are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs to promote their long-term sobriety. Care modalities are highly customized and may include a range of medical, mental health, and social service resources, including peer coaching, career counseling, and 12 step program induction.

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

Most sober living homes in Maryland are located in peaceful, quiet neighborhoods. These private residences are designed to offer a low-stress but structured environment where residents can focus on their ongoing recovery efforts and receive support to maintain sobriety. Several individuals, all of whom are in recovery, share the halfway house. This type of communal living helps decrease relapse, increase employment rates, and helps individuals hone their recovery skills.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Once a person has become addicted to a substance, drug rehab in Maryland is often necessary to overcome that addiction. These programs provide the tools individuals need to manage the physical, mental, and emotional issues involved and begin a successful recovery journey.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Dr. Smith is amazing! She spent about 20 minutes explaining EVERYTHING I needed to know about the new diagnosis. She also explained in detail my results and the new treatment and options and I was started on the treatment right away. The front desk staff is also very helpful and friendly. There are 2 things that I believe could be improved:1) there are no tissues in the exam rooms (it can be hard to receive a diagnosis and I started crying).2) I requested my meds to be sent to a the pharmacy I had listed TWICE and these were still sent somewhere else.

I Melvin Wilson a patient at this Hospital am NOT a Bot Or any way shape or form is affiliated or have any personal or business dealings with this Great Hospital other than being a 1st time patient at this Beautiful Professional Facility. I just want the people of Baltimore and the Surrounding DMV area to recognize the pristine Gem that I had the absolute pleasure of accidentally stumbling on. 1st a little background story of How I got here.. About 5 yrs ago in Tampa Florida,I got this disease call Cellutitis,U got treated At Advent St.Joseph Hospital in Tampa across the street from Raymond James stadium or the Tampa Bay Bycs training facility.I stayed about ten days and was told I was ok enough to be released. So 5 yrs later when the same problem arose,I just thought that I could take some antibiotics, and the problem would go away,to make a long story short..I booked a last minute flight to Orlando to Miami.. Southwest Airlines accommodated me a sold me a one ticket to Miami, but to Baltimore 1st because the didn't fly nonstop one way From Orlando to Miami. So I had a layover in Baltimore for 3hrs,then to Miami where I decided to go smoke during the wait time.. After about 2 hrs in I decided to recheck back in through TSA asking Southwest Airlines Employees to help me to the security check point. Bottom line ,no one would assist me being pushed to the plane where the light just came on NOW BOARDING..U have the priority ticket which lets me board 1st being disabled and in a Southwest Airlines wheelchair! So I was beginning to get upset and was questioned by some of their employees about how I got downstairs, U told them I had a 3 hour layover over waiting to board the flight to Miami and I'm a smoker..So I came here to smoke. They asked who Pushed me down there,I said me..It's actually not that far from where I was at.SO I kept telling them the plane is boarding and all my other luggage was in Miami shipped before me.No one would help me..So I ended up missing the flight ! I rebooked for tomorrow.I paid an employee $20.00 who also worked at Southwest Airlines to help me find a hotel room so I could get some rest before the 205 flight to Miami But My foot was hurting So I took my left shoe off and puddle puss and white blood cells was in my shoe So I took my sock off and my foot was swollen so bad That I couldn't stand on it,I tried to wave down a police officer but he seemed to be distracted,so I called 911 They missed me on their first drive-by but the second time saw me and decided to take me here but they had other options... Why the chose me I'll be forever be thankful.I found out the infection got so bad they had to run a lot of test including MRI,EKG,blood work, specialist in skin disease from John Hopkins,Special skin surgeon, and a host of therapists and 3 physical e..Saying after my surgery I would have to rehab and recovery..The surgeries went great and I had two in the span of three days ! The menu here is excellent I even met the Head chef and a host of supervisors from the kitchen. Also the customer service where you order your food by phone. They were very professional, patient, even sent some order takers to my room to personally take my order!courteous with every order taken, they made sure nothing was left off the menu! Oh ,by the way the food was hot and delicious... Especially the coffee and a wide variety of cold beverages including milk.So this is why I gave thema 5 star rating along with theirAnd all of the staff I was I awe. Even through it's only my second time on the hospital.I know quality, cleanliness, and great customer service when I actually see it.
