About Sheppard Pratt – Outpatient Mental Health Center – Columbia

The Sheppard Pratt Outpatient Mental Health Clinic provides mental health and addiction treatment to adults, children, and adolescents in Columbia, Maryland. The facility strives to be an environment that’s safe and welcoming for all patients. The staff members are trained to help with a variety of life challenges, behavioral issues and relationship issues. Some of the services that are included are psychiatric assessments, couples and marital counseling, and family psychoeducation.

An additional service that I like that Sheppard Pratt offers is telehealth services. It allows patients to receive treatment from the comfort of their homes if they’re unable to receive in person treatment.

The clinic treats addiction through counseling, drug and alcohol use support groups and drug and alcohol education. In individual counseling, therapists will teach clients different coping strategies to manage stress or other emotional factors that may be contributing to addiction. Clients will likely also be taught different ways to address their cravings. Therapeutic approaches that may be used could include motivational interviewing and anger management.

Along with counseling, medication may also be provided to help with reducing any symptoms of withdrawal.

The education services can help clients learn to recognize their triggers and better understand their addiction and mental health issues. Drug and alcohol use support groups are those where patients can address their addiction issues among supportive and understanding individuals. Patients have the opportunity to practice their coping strategies with group members and develop their communication and interpersonal skills. They can also gain knowledge from their peers on how to better manage their addiction issues.

I was excited that this was Shepherd Pratt because I've heard nothing but good things about Shepherd Pratt growing up well apparently times have changed. It's extremely hard to get an appointment or have somebody to return your call to get an appointment. My child has seen the doctor twice and then the rest of the time has been video call, the counseling side has been good. But trying to get anybody to refill a prescription is a nightmare. When you have to cancel an appointment and you call them back to reschedule that appointment it's like fighting with yourself to get out of a wet paper bag. The front secretary the young girl is extremely rude when you walk in the front door it's not a welcome feeling, you feel like a burden when you try to ask the secretary questions she gets an attitude with you. Apparently my son had an appointment on 10/1 /2024 that we never knew about they never called to schedule that appointment with us or they got us confused with somebody else. If you're in desperate need then I would recommend this place otherwise if you're not I would try to find somewhere else to go. PS when you call the advocate number that's only a number to make complaints that's not a number to discuss the issues. I don't know why they put advocate next to the number because nobody's advocating for your child or yourself.

Sheppard Pratt in Columbia is okay. I liked my therapist Leslie and nurse practitioner Star. Time for a fresh start elsewhere.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab enables clients to focus exclusively on their recovery while living in a highly structured and supportive environment. Inpatient treatment is typically designed for clients who have just completed detox, are in early recovery, and/or are at an elevated risk of relapse. Their treatment generally involves intensive addiction counseling, including individual, group, and family counseling. Many inpatient rehabs also offer recovery-focused life skills training and/or holistic therapies, such as yoga, massage, and meditation.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. The length of stay at the detoxification program is determined according to the specific needs of the patient.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

During dialectical behavior therapy sessions, you'll review the challenges you faced the previous week and the feelings you experienced during those times. You and your therapist will engage in problem solving, discussing how you can handle those situations in the future for a better outcome. This involves keeping a diary throughout the week to track your emotions.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

The focus of trauma therapy is to heal the emotional wounds that occurred when you witnessed or experienced a traumatic event. Therapy helps you process this trauma emotionally and mentally so you develop healthier coping skills and improve your quality of life.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

I was going to Omni for 20 years. Then Shephard Pratt bought them out. In less than a month we lost our safe place, our therapists and our doctors. They don t even have a psychiatrist available. They don t care about clients just the almighty dollar.

Unfortunately, my client has not had a great experience here. His former psychiatrist Dr. Ally did not seem to care about his needs. He was also taking a medication that should have been discontinued years ago. She knew this but didn't discontinue until recently but he still is experiencing the side effects from it. To make matters worse she retires and doesn't let any of her patients know. Before she retired she was suppose to give me a referral to an autism specialist for her client but after waiting two weeks with no response and then finding out she retired we never got the information.

I think Katie, my therapist, is great. I think the billing department is absolutely ridiculous. I left so many voicemail messages to pay a $10 bill and it took calling four times in a row to find someone able to help me. Since online billing apparently doesn't work here, the phone call was my only option.

Response from the owner2 years ago
Hi Maggie, thank you for letting us know. We regret to hear that you had a negative experience with billing, and will use this as an opportunity to improve. Our patient advocates are here to further discuss your experience at 410-938-3706.

please do not ever try and get help from these people. the therapist and psychiatrist i had are horrible. they wont sign my home and hospital papers for me to stay home because THEY think i should go back to school knowing i am not ready at all, my medication hasnt fully set it, and that school triggers alot of my issues. they do not care about the well being of their patients at all. the psychiatrist i had who isnt even a real psychiatrist was going to make me wait four more weeks to take an diagnosis assessment because me and my mom were FIVE minutes late. my therapist wouldnt even acknowledge that i have symptoms for the disorder and always told me she doesnt think i have it when i gave proof and told stories. these people are absolutely horrible and should go to hell.
