About Maryland Recovery

Maryland Recovery is an addiction recovery program in Harford County. They’ve been around since 1999 in Bel Air, Maryland and offer affordable recovery housing and outpatient programs.

Living in a sober recovery home while attending outpatient treatment gives you all the benefits of residential treatment but without the high cost. Also, many insurance companies pay for outpatient treatment when they don’t pay for residential care.

To be admitted, you need to be medically stable. You’ll need to attend a medical detox before coming to Maryland Recovery.

You’ll get a custom treatment plan for your needs. Generally, clients stay between 28-90 days.
Maryland Recovery provides comfortable, home-like housing. You’ll go to work or school and live your life as normally as possible while still working on your recovery. They also have an alumni program for past clients. This way you can stay connected to the recovery community even after you complete your treatment.

Previous clients are positive about their experience. Several claim this facility saved their lives. There were a few previous clients that had concerns as well.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Patients admitted into Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) will receive addiction treatment 7 days a week. This program has a strong clinical component, and it’s designed to help adults who are still in the early stages of recovery, including withdrawal. PHP patients receive up to 6 hours of treatment each day in a residential setting and are closely monitored to make sure their physical and mental health remains stable during this period.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed for patients who don’t require the same level of monitoring and treatment as those in the PHP. The IOP features clinical treatment (in the form of individual and group counseling) as well as expert holistic therapy. Community integration is also a key component of the IOP.

aftercare iconAftercare

Clients receiving support in a rehab aftercare program typically partner with their case manager and care team to identify and access the services that best align with their recovery needs and goals. Rehab aftercare services are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs to promote their long-term sobriety. Care modalities are highly customized and may include a range of medical, mental health, and social service resources, including peer coaching, career counseling, and 12 step program induction.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Patients admitted into Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) will receive addiction treatment 7 days a week. This program has a strong clinical component, and it’s designed to help adults who are still in the early stages of recovery, including withdrawal. PHP patients receive up to 6 hours of treatment each day in a residential setting and are closely monitored to make sure their physical and mental health remains stable during this period.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

For intensive-level rehab treatment, 24-hour clinical care in Maryland is an essential tool. Medical staff are available around the clock to supervise the process, which involves cleansing the body of toxins. Close supervision is necessary due to the potential risks of withdrawal symptoms. Medical experts on-site are available to prescribe medications and other forms of treatment to address these symptoms and ensure a safe detox process.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Our Policy: Maryland Recovery works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact us to verify your specific insurance provider.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Once a person has become addicted to a substance, drug rehab in Maryland is often necessary to overcome that addiction. These programs provide the tools individuals need to manage the physical, mental, and emotional issues involved and begin a successful recovery journey.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Mental health disorders are said to play a role in more than 50 percent of drug addiction cases. Therefore, the facility offers exceptional treatment for dual diagnosis disorders. Maryland Recovery patients with a dual diagnosis are given a tailored treatment plan to accommodate their mental, emotional and even physical needs.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

equine-therapy iconEquine Therapy

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

When you participate in couples therapy, you learn how to understand each other better, improve your communication skills, resolve conflict, and improve relationship satisfaction. Your therapist will help you develop skills in each of these areas to strengthen your relationship.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

art-brush iconCreative Arts Therapy

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

This place saved my life. They immerse you into the recovery community with meetings every night. During the day it s a lot of learning about addiction, the way the brain works, and stress management techniques. Recovery is what you put into it and there are plenty of people involved with this program who are willing to help with every step a long the way. It is still rehab and it s work, but it is work on yourself and for me this was a place that helped set me on a better path. If you need help and and looking at reviews is a definite sign come here. What do you have to lose? You have everything to gain if you are willing to put in the work.

I am commenting as a former employee. I highly recommend Maryland Recovery to those struggling with addiction. I also recommend Maryland Recovery as a great place to work. I learned a ton there. I have been in the field for 4 years and have never experienced the level of care and professionalism like Maryland Recovery. I sincerely mean that. We had a meeting every morning to discuss the best level of care for clients. Clients are not viewed at as just dollar signs. They genuinely care. The staff is amazing and everyone does their part. Many of the staff are people I consider great friends and I will always remember. I have seen a lot working in addiction. What I haven t seen is an organization as a whole that truly cares. Thanks for the tools and the amazing experience.

Response from the owner1 year ago

We're glad to know that our daily meetings and collaborative approach left a positive impact on you. We believe strongly in viewing our clients as individuals, not dollar signs, and it's great to hear this reflected in your comments. Your words reaffirm our belief that we're on the right track in providing a supportive work environment and quality care for those struggling with addiction. Thank you for being a part of our mission and for your kind words.

I feel like if you went to MRP and disliked the experience, then maybe you were there for the wrong reasons or didn't take advantage of the experience! I'm not saying that it was all sunshine and rainbows but I was there to learn how to be me again and I got that and so much more. The staff was great! I made some amazing friendships with people and really got to take care of ME for a change. I can only speak for myself, but I highly recommend the program and will continue too! I miss all of the staff and hope that I can be involved with them on a professional level one day!

Place was run down, at one point pipes busted on second floor resulting in cascading waterfalls crashing down into the dining area. Bed bugs, etc. They set up cots so they could squeeze extra people in. Catered to people with high bottoms, singular view on treatment and it s outdated. Really Overpriced.I am editing this to respond. I am not confusing this facility with another treatment program. This is where I was and what happened and I think it s pretty horrible that you re going to pretend that it wasn t your establishment. Still trying to rip people off I see. If it makes anyone feel better I m still clean but most people I was there with are not, many of them are dead.I ve been to free places that are so much better.

The place is ok but it is incredibly expensive and they exaggerate about what they do and what it s like there and where you live and with how many people etc. Talk about stuff like equine therapy yet I m not aware of a single person doing it once in the three months I was there. I m sure someone s done it once a long time ago at least but cmon. this is however something basically every rehabs does tho. They are rarely what they make em out to be. People should be aware that they exaggerate but there are definitely worse rehabs. It s never sat well with me that they ll tell you anything on the phone to get you thru the door and the just try and deal with the fallout after you find out they don t do x or y or whatever it may be. You d think for the money that is charged they would be able to afford the things they say but guess it cuts into the profits too much lol. Really wish rehabs weren t for profit but what can ya do. Now I went there awhile ago perhaps they ve changed. I really like the people there tho but I felt this needed to be said so people know what to expect sorry. EDIT: I checked their website and it looks much better than I remember it, maybe it s in the past. I do remember they did do acupuncture all the time it was just the equine therapy that was nonexistent.

Please don t go here or send your loved ones here. They promise you things over the phone that do not exist. They are not consistent with their rules and regulations. In no way was I felt cared for by the staff. One night myself and two other clients were left alone all night without supervision. The door on our inpatient house did not lock. The treatment consisted of watching movies and listening to music/watching music videos. Meds were not supervised by a nurse. Just dispensed on an honor code system. That being said, there are people there that care. Those people were the other clients. We had each other s backs. I have heard that this place used to be amazing. They actually have an idea that works. Month one, inpatient. Month two and three, inpatient but with more privileges (ie get a job or volunteer, household chores...) but their vision is flawed. They need a huge change to bring it back. The town of Bel Air is lovely with a strong fellowship and good local people. MRP is a stain on the town. I did not put my all into the program. That s on me. However, I felt like I was lied to, forgotten and just another paycheck to them. I have since found my way in sobriety at another treatment program in Northern Virginia and have almost 10 months clean and sober. I am happy. What am I most happy about? Not being in Bel Air Maryland.
