About Magnolia Recovery Center

Magnolia Recovery Center was a small, private addiction treatment facility in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina that’s now permanently closed. You might have also heard them called Sunspire Health Hilton Head, which was their former name. They offered personalized recovery programs for adults struggling with addictions and co-occurring mental health disorders. Healthcare professionals could also go here to get discreet support if they were struggling with those conditions. Their services included mediation assisted treatment, residential treatment, and a partial hospitalization program.

If someone needed help detoxing before starting their treatment plan, they could get addiction medications to make the process easier. These medicines also helped control their cravings and made them less likely to relapse. From there, they’d move into residential or outpatient treatment.

Residential treatment took place at the facility, which was once a boutique hotel. The setting felt like a resort and featured modern amenities. They also offered outpatient care so clients could participate in services while still attending work or school and living at home. Both programs included therapy services for individuals, groups, and families. A perk of staying on site was that residential clients could also take part in the facility’s holistic activities. Some of those options included yoga, art, meditation, and adventure based team building exercises.

Past clients remark that they can’t say enough good things about this facility. They reported that the staff members were caring and kind, and their experience resulted in hope and sobriety.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
For many who enter addiction treatment, detox is the first step in the recovery process. Medical detox is the phase in which individuals clear all traces of the addictive substance from their body while the physical symptoms of withdrawal are managed by medical professionals. At Sunspire Health, our Board Certified medical professionals are available 24/7 to supervise patient detox. Not only does this ensure a healthy and safe withdrawal, but it also leads to higher chances of recovery from treatment. The medical detox process begins immediately after the patient arrives at the detox center and goes through intake. The length of the detox process depends on the patient's medical history, the type of substance they used and how long they used the substance. Withdrawal symptoms can last a few days or even a couple of weeks. In most cases, medical detox will last between 7 to 14 days. While medical detox may cleanse a person's body of the addictive substance, it does not treat the underlying behavioral causes of addiction or treat the effects. Medical detox must be followed by therapy and other forms of rehabilitation. A residential treatment program, which often follows detox, may take between 30 and 90 days
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Sunspire Health's Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) can be the next level of care after a client completes residential treatment or a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). In some locations, clients can start treatment at the IOP level of care. In IOP, clients attend rehabilitation sessions at a facility 3-5 times a week for 3-4 hours per session while living at home. Individuals are able to regularly see and communicate with their friends and family during this time, which provides additional support during recovery. IOP continues to address the physical and psychological causes and effects of addiction with integrated treatment methods that combine evidence-based, adventure and holistic therapies. During IOP, a client will attend individual therapy sessions, family therapy sessions and support group sessions with others on the path to recovery. Medical professionals at an IOP center may administer medication, depending on their assessment of the individual's needs. Those in treatment at one of our IOPs are strongly urged to continue to receive additional support by attending a community based self-help program such as 12-Step meetings, this serves as an additional support system in place for when triggers and stressors from outside influences could challenge their recent sobriety.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment is highly recommended for those suffering with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders who are ready to begin recovering from addiction or addictive behaviors. Our residential treatment programs offer clients a safe, homelike environment to heal where they can reside throughout the duration of their addiction treatment program, with the benefit of 24/7 access to medical professionals and addiction specialists. Also known as an inpatient treatment program, a residential program addresses the physical and psychological causes and effects of substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders with treatment methods that integrate evidence-based clinical interventions, use of evidence-based medications (if required and prescribed by the attending physician), and holistic therapies. Treatment length depends on each individual case, and as directed by the center's clinical and medical team, and typically can range from 30 to 90 days.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Choosing a drug rehab in South Carolina helps you overcome drug dependency, learn how to manage cravings, and obtain the tools needed to prevent relapse. This is accomplished through individualized treatment that addresses a full spectrum of physical, social, and emotional needs.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Family Program is key in helping the whole family heal and supports the loved one during and after treatment. This program helps educate families about substance use disorders and the underlying issues that their loved one is addressing. It also helps family members work on issues that affect them and their relationship with their family member. The program teaches people how to support and cope with an addicted family member, how to better communicate and establish boundaries, and how to connect with community support systems to find other options for self-care. We understand that many people who abuse substances refuse treatment, though family members and concerned significant others are highly motivated to get their loved one the help they need. When a person is resistant to seek help for their addiction, Sunspire Health offers Community Reinforcement Approach and Family Training (CRAFT). During a CRAFT therapy session, the person suffering with addiction is usually not present. Instead, this therapy focuses on educating family members about the nature of addiction and equipping them with communication techniques that discourage their loved ones from using and encourage them to seek help.

Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues. By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

This facility has two faces. After days and days of locating the best facility for my loved one Magnolia seemed to be the best choice for her. They sold me on the resort style vibe of recovery and I was comfortable sending my loved one there. Fast forwarding to Admit day all seemed to go well and my loved one also felt comfortable. We found out that they only allow 15 minute calls to family twice a week which we thought was odd being she was in a mandatory facility and they allowed her too call any free time she had and it was hospital ran and for the amount of money i was paying I felt like that was weird but I went with it. Come to find out that when loved ones call they are supervised to make sure that nothing is said that the facility does not want to get out, and if you violate this rule your room key that you pay a ton of money for is taken from you. My loved one complained to me in code for the entire time she was their about the things that were going on in this facility. There are a lot of rich kids there and on multiple occasions there were incidents of theft and fighting amongst the young ones, there were incidents of intercource in the elevators and Pool room and multiple occasions where my loved one was offered drugs such as Xanax and valium. The also preach that their are 3 personal chefs and my loved one would have food made with her dietary specifications (Vegetarian) when the food was made it was stolen before she would get to it and sometimes there was not enough food for everybody! They take you offsite for meetings and these meeting usually last till about 9pm and you come back and get your meds from staff, on sever occations my loved one was denied meds cause she was late for the 9pm med call and was made to wait till all meds were passed out before she could get hers, sometimes taking hours upon hours to be done. The counselors were amazing Nicole Neil is the best but the staff all think they are prison guards and when it comes down to it the place is ran like a prison. So if you are considering this facility please look into it they discharged my loved one for assaulting staff and called the cops to have her arrested. When the cops came a witness stepped forward and vouched for my loved one and said it was a complete accident so no arrests were made but the director still had her discharged along with the person who vouched for her. I payed a lot of money for a nice serene setting for my loved one and it turned out to be hell.Treatment with Counselors and things learned - 5 starsStaff, Director and facility - 1 starThere are lots of things going on there that the staff dont know about and I feel really bad about subjecting my loved one too it. And I didnt know a thing about it cause they are monitored 24/7 which is odd for a voluntary facility the you pay a ton for!

If you or a loved one are struggling with addiction please do not give up! Sunspire Hilton Head was truly a blessing to my family. Our story is not unique but thanks to Sunspire ended with hope and sobriety. I didn t know the extent to which Sunspire would change all of our lives. Sunspire helped my sibling and family to understand the disease, advocate for their self, and understand the trajectory he would need to take to beat his disease. Sunspire was extremely supportive to the family through one on one conversations, counseling sessions, and support. Sunspire gets knows the individual needs of each patient and develops a unique plan customized to the patient s treatment and success. I am forever indebted to Sunspire for what they have done for my family. My sibling developed a support group that led to an amazing sponsor and an intensive outpatient program. Thank you Sunspire Health Hilton Head from the bottom of our hearts!
