About First Step Community Recovery Center

First Step Community Recovery Center, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a detox alcohol and drug addiction treatment center that provides recovery services aimed to create long term success. Their behavioral therapies are scientifically proven to treat addiction.

First Step Community Recovery Center offers detox, medication management, housing, case management, and trauma care.

The detox program at First Step Community Recovery Center provides a safe and effective detox process in a comfortable and monitored environment. While ridding the body of toxins is the first priority, ensuring the client is ready for additional treatment is also important. Time is spent preparing for mental and emotional treatment post detox.

Medication Assisted Treatment provides medications along with comprehensive medical, psychiatric, and behavioral counseling. FDA approved medications are used to support withdrawal from opioid drugs and to help maintain long term abstinence. By combining medication with mental health treatment, a greater chance of success is achieved for long term abstinence.

Those in addiction treatment, or who may be facing homelessness, can utilize the supportive housing services available through First Step Community Center. This service has access to over 4,000 apartments and homes dedicated to low income individuals.

Trauma is often a root cause of addiction, changing the brain and biochemistry. Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents through scientifically proven and evidence based treatment methods that help target the nervous system’s processing centers, which help to create balance mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Individual therapy creates the space to explore the psychological challenges associated with addiction. With the help of a professional, individuals are given the space and direction to talk about and process their emotions. Often this includes unresolved trauma, anger, depression, anxiety, and the need for more control or autonomy in life. At First Step Community Recovery Center, evidence based treatment is provided during individual counseling sessions.

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Rehab aftercare programs support clients' long-term recovery through highly customized wraparound care aligned with clients' evolving needs. Most have been sober for a period of weeks or longer and have completed intensive inpatient rehab but may be receiving outpatient care. Many clients also receive services after being discharged from formal treatment. Long-term care plans are typically developed in collaboration with the client's case manager and care team and may include peer coaching, relapse prevention, and related services.

book iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

prescription iconDrug Addiction

The goal of drug rehab in Wisconsin is to address drug addiction as a complex issue that involves physical, mental, and relational aspects. During rehab, treatment focuses on each of these areas and gives you the tools you need to achieve and maintain sobriety.

head-side-medical iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

prescription-bottle-pill iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

file-medical iconSubstance Abuse

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Family Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

I just want to start by stating that I would highly recommend that you go anywhere but here if you need help. I had the most horrific experience at the first step detox facility. This is not an understatement. The first few days and nights were ok but when I was being discharged and politely asked for my belongings back things turned. I was physically attacked by THE STAFF and when I say staff I mean 5 woman and 1 man jumped me and continued to kick me while I was bleeding on the ground. Since the beating my head injury has caused numerous medical problems. I will never be the same again. I would not wish this on my worst enemy. Just thought I d share so no one else would ever experience the same. TERRIBLE IS PUTTING IT KINDLY. Anywho that s what I think about the first step

I truly think this place does a Terrific job of helping you thru the first 3-5 days of detox. Moreso than any other places I've encountered. My only problem was the Dr . He was professional and informative but also taunted me and my addiction in such a way I wanted to leave but I stayed the way they dose u down with suboxone is absolutely one of the best ways I've seen it done. . The staff would come in smelling like cigarettes and make me want to leave just to smoke but other than that they were pretty cool

6 years clean now. This place was the begging of my life. You can look for a thousand flaws in here but if you really use this as a tool and ignore the imperfections you will focus inYOUR imperfections and start a clean life. I was out of here in 7 days and comete 3 month of treatment. I now have a house, a wife a daughter a roof, food and a great job. You can do it !

They are completely ignorant about benzo addiction. Nor understand seizures are a risk factor and you need to taper them people off. Medically ignorant if you read medical lit from even Harvard and Yale. They also hung up on my several times when I called for a friend trying to explain this.Somebody is going to die there, if they haven t already. Somebody almost did according to reviews

I will start by saying, hey it's cost free, and usually have availability. The guy Luke who did my intake was very professional and did start treating me asap. The problems started after he was relieved by possibly the rudest most unprofessional nurse that I have ever encountered who did nothing further to even attempt to help me. The rest of the nurses were decent if and when they were there. I would recommend finding a doctor who will prescribe you withdrawal meds, and go it alone rather than subject yourself to this, you WILL be better off. I could care less about the food or comfort, but being ignored while in alcohol withdrawal is not only negligent but cruel. Go anywhere else if you can.

First Step is a nightmare. When you get there be prepared to wait 3 to 4 hours in the intake room while staff smokes cigarettes and eats food. Once you get upstairs you are put in a hospital gown that is about 30 years old with stains. If you ask any questions the staff is extremely rude and could care less about you they say they are understaffed and thats why everything takes so long. I will admit there is 1 or 2 nice individuals there and thats it, First Step is like hell on earth, do whatever you can not to go there.
