About Lokahi Treatment Centers

Lokahi Treatment Center has five locations throughout Hawaii. They offer dual diagnosis substance abuse and mental health services and prevention services for clients of all ages. The CARF accredited facility in Kailua Kona focuses on meeting the needs of rural communities who need it the most. Their structured outpatient programs focus on personal responsibility, dignity and self esteem.

They offer mental health and substance use assessments including anger management assessments. Their outpatient treatments include gender specific and mixed groups, individual, couples and family counseling, medication management and prevention programs. They also have domestic violence intervention classes and psychiatric evaluations.

I like that they have many partner agencies that they work closely with. These include centers that work to end homelessness, parenting and family centers, supplemental food programs and pantries and transitional and supportive housing services. Having established partnerships means that you and your loved ones can get all the services you need. Staff can help coordinate referrals and connections to these partners.

Lokahi Treatment Center accepts most types of medical insurance.

There are examples of unethical and illegal conduct in all areas of medicine and healthcare, but substance use disorder has historically been largely unmonitored in comparison to other medical conditions, and so has been very publicly riddled with more than its fair share of deceits and deceptions that have exploited vulnerable patients for profit. Lokahi s Kona clinic is no exception.Billing insurance companies excessively for unnecessary treatment or services. This was commonly seen in urine drug screens, where $10 drug tests were being conducted every week and billed at $1000 or more to insurance.Insurance sees these tests as unnecessary and refuses to pay ultimately leaving the patient with tens of thousands of dollars of debt after a 16 week treatment plan.Instances where patients were required to take urinalysis in front of other mixed gender patients and staff as a humiliation tactic. Also, treatment plan or diagnosis, was discussed in a sales or marketing context, and shared with individuals outside the patient s care team, without medical necessity or the patient s consent. This is in violation of HIPAA and other patient privacy protection laws that work to protect sensitive health information of the individual.Because of the lack of regulation amongst these treatment facilities, these predatory facilities have been dominating the area of court ordered treatment. These patients are not only vulnerable, but have no other options as the courts require use of only a few specific locations. These facilities take on a one size fits all approach that often give a 17 year old first time offender the same requirements as a 45 year old habitual felon. This eliminates the possibility of being given a no treatment needed diagnosis, as in their eyes anyone whom has ever used any type of drug or alcohol at any time, needs and requires treatment. This is known as profit biased diagnosis and is sadly seen throughout the country at these treatment mills.Protecting patients from corrupt addiction marketing practices will be the first step in creating honest and effective treatment for substance use disorder. While decisions on what treatment facility to enter are often made in states of distress, it is important to emphasize that individuals and families should protect themselves by learning about what constitutes quality addiction treatment, where to search to find trusted local providers, and how to ultimately decide which option is best.

I can't believe this is the best we can do in Kona. This shabby place is no way hopeful for anyone faced with the challenges of having a member of the family in need of help with addiction. The receptionist has a distinct negative attitude toward everyone that walks through these doors.I have found their practice of UA collection to be frightening and geared toward failure. When I turned to this facility for help with my teens alcohol abuse I was shown only disdain, as if I was the reason for the problem that now face my family. The woman I spoke with showed no compassion what so ever and seemed to be bothered by my presence . I left feeling hopeless and rejected. It took days for the negative vibes to tone down but this has left a cold space where I needed genuine service.I am shocked that this is the place recommended by our courts. It really leaves a sense of shame and failure that should be replaced with hope and creative resources that fuel positive change in our little town. We truly need an alternative to this dismal place . All I have seen here in several years is just another place that some of the lost and unaware addicts a place where they can meet up with one another right outside it's very doors.I wish each officer of the court could experience this place first hand while unidentified as whatever position they are in before being considering their referals. This should be standard practice if they are to gain any real understanding of the people they are appointed to advise and make decisions regarding their treatment. They sit in their courtrooms in a world of us and them. If we are truly to commit to loving and helping one another, we must first see ourselves as one . We are currently alienated from each other's viewpoints and challenges. This way we can come together and face all these situations that now pose a serious threat to our well being as denizens of our beautiful planet.Unity will keep us strong because we all have something to offer. You all have a great day and if you are looking for the place to offer shelter in your storm, keep looking.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab enables clients to remove themselves from the distractions, stressors, and triggers of the outside world while they focus exclusively on their recovery. Clients receive housing, meals, and access to medical and mental health care as they regain stability, particularly following detox. They also engage in extensive psychotherapy, which may include group and family therapy as well as individual counseling. Many programs also offer holistic treatment and/or recovery-focused life skills training.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Hawaii is for individuals suffering from substance use disorders. Treatment addresses the many issues involved with addiction, typically through a combination of medical and psychotherapy treatments.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

During treatment, you'll work on strengthening any life skills you'll need after rehab. These may include interpersonal communication, finding a job, managing finances, and coping with stress. These skills cover the basic tasks you'll need to accomplish to successfully maintain sobriety.
