About Burning Tree Ranch

Located in Kaufman, Texas, Burning Tree Ranch is a charming facility that offers drug rehab services to individuals suffering from drug and alcohol addictions. They make it a point to mention that they specialize in helping people who are in advanced stages of addiction who perhaps have tried and failed to recover at other clinics.

They offer long-term treatment and aftercare, and a plethora of services and treatment modalities. Before we get to that, however, let’s talk about some of their core services. They’re a dual diagnosis center and provide care not only to people who suffer from addiction, but co-occurring mental health conditions too. This can range as wide as you can think, from depression to bipolar disorder to schizophrenia.

Addiction can have a strong negative impact when you already struggle with mental health. This clinic seems up to the task of giving you the best and most intensive treatment possible.

They also offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for anyone concerned about withdrawal symptoms that may come with your detox process. Some medications such as Vivitrol and Suboxone have been shown to significantly reduce negative withdrawal symptoms and reduce the severity of your cravings when quitting.

This center also teaches the principles of the 12 Step program, but they go deeper into the steps than most clinics. They also have plenty of therapy options, including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, existential therapy, gestalt therapy, neurofeedback therapy, equine therapy, cognitive (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT, and individual and group counseling. In summary, there are plenty of beneficial treatment options here that I would highly recommend to anyone with severe addiction.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Residents of a sober living home in Texas reside at the halfway house with others who have agreed to abstain from substances and practice sober-living skills. The relationships and accountability formed here can help individuals strengthen their mental health and achieve long-term recovery. Residents share common spaces such as kitchens and back yards, share meals together, and share household responsibilities such as cooking and cleaning.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
24-hour clinical care in Texas provides a safe environment for medical detox. This setting is crucial to provide medical care during withdrawal. Certain withdrawal symptoms can cause life-threatening conditions, but patients in a supervised clinical setting have treatment readily available to address any symptoms before they become severe. Treatment can also be provided for co-occurring physical and mental health issues.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

During rehab in Texas, you'll deal with underlying issues that contribute to addiction. By addressing these challenges and learning healthy ways to cope with them, you'll develop strategies that help you live a drug-free lifestyle.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues. By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Disappointed

Please don’t waste your time or money on this place. As a parent who lost a child after they spent a year here please find an alternative rehab. This place uses community shaming which has been proven to be a failure.

Burning Tree Ranch is unmatched in the work they do, especially with chronic relapsers. I personally know two women whose lives were saved by going to Burning Tree.I am also an industry professional who refers to Burning Tree knowing the the client will be in great hands. Lauren Juvers, Brook McKenzie, Jesse Earwood, Olivia Wilder, and their entire team are the best in the field. I would feel comfortable and confident about sending a family member to Burning Tree.

The Burning Tree program has been thoughtfully created to treat chronic substance use disorder. Their time-tested approach is comprehensive and different than many other providers in the addiction space. I had the pleasure of spending time with their team, shadowing the work they do and getting a deep understanding of their "why."From the very first phone call, this team asks families if they are willing to try a different approach than they have in past treatment episodes. The fact that so many of their alumni are engaged in the program and eventually work for this company speaks volumes about the work they do! This is truly LONG TERM treatment, designed to help someone totally change their life.

My life has been impacted by burning tree ranch without even being an alumni of this life changing program. I have been blessed with an amazing sponsor that was a product of burning tree and her own hard work in her recovery journey. Getting to know her I can see the healthy routines, in depth knowledge, and dedication to spiritual principles that she learned along the way of burning trees program and how they set her up for success afterward. Several of my closest friends have similar experiences here and they are the people I want to surround myself. This program helps men and women become the best version of themselves and allows them to pass it along to others like myself. Thank you burning tree!!!

As a professional in this field, vetting treatment centers is something that I do frequently. It s necessary so that I not only understand the program structure, but also so that I can meet the clinical team, lay eyes on the grounds, and see for myself what it is they offer to clients and their families.Burning Tree took that tour to the next level and immersed me into their programming the first half of the day. They do what they say they are going to do and while that should be the standard at every treatment center, it unfortunately, isn t.Burning Tree is specific in that they are not the program for everyone. They exist to help the chronic relapser, and they live by a standard of excellence. They understand that it takes more to help someone who has a history of relapse, and they do that well.

I ve been in the DFW recovery community for nearly ten years and encountered many on the path of sobriety who are Burning Tree alumni or actively in the program. Nearly everyone I ve known over the years associated with Burning Tree has an energy and presence that s unmistakable. They walk with integrity, they re active in the recovery community, and they re usually very disciplined in their daily spiritual program. It s clear that this comes from the values instilled in them during their time at Burning Tree. I m always impressed with those folks I get to know who come from Burning Tree and I highly encourage it for anyone looking to break the cycle of addiction and live a better more meaningful life.

Telling that all of the positive reviews are all about the same length, use the same writing style, and say very similar things. This likely because they're written by the same person or with the use of AI as a way to up ratings. Not necesssairly the rehabs actions but possibly a well meaning individual. They are much too a like to be real reviews. Red flag number two monitored calls. Sure the first few weeks calls should be limited to give people time to acclimate and not ditch and run through the difficult stage of early recovery but after that its not helpful to limit the rebuilding of meaningful relationships with loved ones. Addicts need to have access to that support if their family is paying this much for treatment they are obviously invested in their recovery. Places that limit or monitor open and honest communication scream trouble teen industry adjacent. Be cautious some people just want to take your money and will manipulate you by making you think your loved one is going to leave and die before you can get to them. Well, not if you allowed safe transport when people decide your program isn't for them which is completely legitimate. Any program that says they can save anyone and is a good fit and the only choice you have to save your loved one's life is selling you something. Recovery comes when your loved one is ready and finds a supportive community where it's safe to process trauma. A military style regimen isn't effective for everyone and can be particularly harmful to the neurodivergent. Please do your research and consider your loved one's temperament and readiness for recovery before you spend thousands on a program that they simply aren't ready for or aren't a good fit with. Especially one that will take punitive measures against your loved one if they admit this is the case for them. You should be free to leave at anytime and be returned to a location of their choice if they are willing and able to pay or allow family to come and get them if they cannot or would prefer. You can't save someone who isn't ready no matter what a rehab tries to sell you.

I went to Burning Tree,Kaufman. I went in 2006/07 some time. My husband payed for 3 months up front. By the end of those 3 months I wanted my husband to make arrangements for me to be transferred directly to another facility. This place was a mess. Counselors lying to patients, no private calls( couldn't tell my husband what was really going on as we were always monitored on the phones). The owner at the time claimed many years of sobriety, but if sobriety looked like what he displayed, I didn't want that kind of sobriety. He was a big mouthed bully who enjoyed intimidating people in front of an entire group and throwing his weight around. He came every Friday and people were visibly tense when he was there. I finally had enough of the lies they were telling me and my husband and walked off property and found a phone and got to speak to my husband w/ out their prying ears. Once back I was called up for a staffing. I wrote a polite letter saying I would not attend the staffing w/ out speaking to my attorney and my probation officer. I refused 3 times. They brought me my 3 months worth of property, loaded me in a van and told me they were dropping me off in " Crack town." And so they did. When it came time to go to court, the young man whom was also in treatment, but who gave me my daily chores( whenever I finished my work, I would go to him and ask for more work to keep busy till classes started and he was always happy to give me more as I moved fast, did my work well and was always happy to help out. I don't know what Burning Tree promised him, but he got on the stand and lied through his teeth about me. Said I was lazy. Never did my chores. He had to stay after me all the time. Lie after lie after lie. I was in shock if your out there, you know who you are. What did they promise you? Less time in rehab instead of the one and a half years we were supposed to do? Less $$ for the time you would be there? I have forgiveness for you,but you did me really wrong. I finally found a really great rehab called Starlite up near Certer point Tx. What a relief to get away from that horrid Burning Tree and that Gestapo like owner and his abject cruelty to all. He pick on me once, but he was too late. My dad had been an alcoholic and I was already hardened to his crap so I just blew his attitude w me off. Stay away. There are oh so much better places to get sober and stay clean and sober. I am 17years clean and sober. Doubt I could say that if I had stayed at Burning Tree.

Brook McKenzie of Burning Tree helped us through a very difficult time, not only while our son was there, but exceptionally, after he left. We needed a referral, and Brooke dropped everything to get us information same day, within hours. He did not owe us that, but he did it, because I believe he truly cares.

In 2010 I was referred to Burning Tree by my Sister for my daughter who had been in eleven previous treatment programs. Her Aunt owns her own treatment center but we all felt long term care was our last chance and hers. We re talking years of addiction most people need to have more than 30 days and sometimes 365 isn t enough. They have everything they need to get sober and more I wasn t paying for a pool and equine therapy ocean view . My daughter had already been to those places and I don t even want to go on what happen there so I was relieved brick bldg ,bed ,shower and rules! As for phone calls that was fine most of the time she wanted to come home so when they were on phone restriction it was a relief and if they want to listen I couldn t care less. I hope all of the Fathers, Mothers, Husbands, Wife s and children go to Al anon or Al teen so you can get the help you need because if you don t change and the alcoholic or addict keeps coming home to the same place where he or she got sick or was sick it will go back to the same thing . I don t mean to sound arrogant or make light of what others have said but I am very grateful for Burning Tree for giving my daughter the tools to get sober and for god for giving her the power and strength to stay sober one day at a time. Prayers for your love ones
