About Lakeland Mental Health Center

Lakeland Mental Health Center, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, is a mental and behavioral health care facility for youth and adults. They offer crisis intervention; home, school, and community-based services; intensive outpatient (IOP) and general outpatient (OP) programming, and aftercare planning and support. Dedicated services are available for adolescents, young adults, military personnel and veterans, LGBTQ+ persons, persons with hearing impairment, justice-involved persons, and persons with co-occurring addiction and mental illness.

Their intensive outpatient (IOP) program is designed for clients requiring high-level supervision and support, including those in early recovery, those stepping down from inpatient care, and those at an elevated risk of relapse. Clients receive medical and mental health assessments and personalized care planning. They also engage in robust individual, group, and family counseling drawing on proven modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). Age-specific, recovery-focused life skills training addressing topics such as coping, emotional regulation, self-care, and relapse prevention is prioritized.

Their general outpatient (OP) and aftercare services ensure a complete continuum of care aligned with clients’ evolving needs and may include step-down support, 12 step program facilitation, and referrals for additional medical, mental health, and social service programs.

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Elizabeth S RNC. Was feeling depressed before meeting her. Felt worse after meeting her. Would not recommend. She j just wanted to address everything except why I was there. She had no respect for anything I had to say. It was a very one sided conversation in which she did not let me partake in. I would give 0 stars however that was not an option.

Paid 250$ for a person to sell me anger management at 75$/week for 12 weeks. I later ended up in jail on an felony assault. It could have been avoided if the medical community cared more about helping a patient than their pocketbook.Edit.2 years since I went 2jail. I'm still struggling with mental health and anger every day. No point looking for help cause I don't have cash. Someone just kill me.

Use to be the best place for mental health. It is changing course and no longer a viable option for psychiatric care. Too many trusted providers leaving and every new provider changes medications that have been working without side effects for over a decade. They will try and change all your medications constantly. Everyone knows how hard it is to find a set of medications that work and work well.Definitely would not recommend Elizabeth Schossow because she decided to change a diagnosis that fit to one that was discredited years prior.Losing Dan Schubert is their lowest point yet.I'd rather be without treatment than go through the hell of swapping medications every few months because of the side effects or interactions with other medications. No wonder there's a mental health crisis in America. Lakeland will abandon you and flat out not treat you if you refuse to take a unknown medication.

My daughter has been seeing Dr. Nate Larson and we have had the best experience. He not only teaches her coping skills but I've also learned new things myself. He is the best and we are grateful for him.

I called back in July 2021 to schedule an appointment because i was seriously worried about my mental health, they told me they couldn t get me in until jan 3rd 2022 and i agreed to wait the 5 months because I thought this clinic would help me. I was wrong. Then they called me to reschedule to january 26th so I said yes, until they called me again because that date wouldn t work for them either and told me I had to wait 2-5 more months to get in for a simple psychiatric appointment. They provided no other help and if I have to wait almost a year to even get in to get looked at, I might as well just take care of myself and find something else. They just don t seem to care. I got more stress instead of help with trying to work with them. I wouldn t even recommend trying.

Lakeland is a terrible place to go if you suffer from severe mental illness, because if you complain about your services and miss as few as 3 appointments in a row they will terminate your treatment showing that they practice patient abandonment with out so much as a care as to why. some of there therapists tend to do nothing but repeat the same thing over and over again every session and seem only to be there to collect a pay check. They do not care about there patients only money and if you become a nuisance to them they'll stop your treatment suddenly by letter. honestly I'd recommend you go anywhere ells but here for your mental heath treatment because this place gives mental heath centers a bad name.
