Unfortunately had to visit the ER following a motorcycle accident I had. $2500 for a 3 mile ambulance ride to a fly infested ER .Worse treatment I ve ever had in my 53 years of existence. Nurses were more interested in telling each other about living on Hawaii island than killing the flies that were landing on my wounds.Ran me through an unnecessary ct scan to see if I cracked my skull and any internal injuries, you d think they d look for broken bones too, but no. Told them I didn t hit my head but dragged it on the ground as I slid. Told them my ribs were killing me but they didn t care. Nothing to numb my laceration before stapling.Thank the lord for real medical services on Oahu .

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Because of the lower rating on here I was nervous to have surgery at this hospital. I can honestly say from checking in to being wheeled out to our car by a nurse I had 5 star service and kindness. Every nurse and doctor were so thoughtful, kept me warm, informed and checked on me frequently. So knowledgeable and made me feel really prepared for going home and what to expect with recovery. They called me the very next day to see how I was and ask about recovery and if I had any feedback. Really wonderful experience and thought I should share. Ridiculous photo of my husband and I before surgery. He said everyone was so nice keeping him informed and helping him find where to go.Thank you!

This is the most unprofessional and disorganized hospital I ve ever seen in my life. Be ready to wait in pain and suffer for hours before anyone will ever talk to you. While I was there I saw a woman who was in visible pain waiting in the waiting room Monday night 7/1/24 go to ask a doctor in ER if someone can please help her otherwise she s just going to go home and try to rest cause she couldn t stay in a seating position any longer she had sciatic nerve damage. The DOCTOR she was speaking to just says okay that s fine . Turns and walks away from her and then she goes to the first nurse she sees in the doorway to the waiting room for all to hear and says this crazy old church looking lady just yelled at me about having to wait ummm in what world!! She didn t yell at all she was polite and just seeking help and care at a hospital! And also since when is it acceptable for a doctor to so rudely judge and put down a woman in pain who s seeking help! It was disgusting to hear someone who s supposed to be caring for our community to speak so unkindly about someone who s in need of help. Just goes to show the type of care this hospitals offers. I know we re limited with doctors in Hawaii but damn does this place house the lowest of the low.

I wouldn t come here again even if I were dying on their doorstep! There was 1 nurse, she was a traveling nurse spending 13 months here and she was caring, friendly, helpful and really tried to be supportive. Once her shift ended the replacement was the absolute opposite! It was a Friday night, I had for some time been expecting ever worsening pain in my back and leg which had now reached unbearable even with opioid medication, muscle relaxers and nerve medication. It got so bad I couldn t stand, sit or walk and the pain just lying down was more than I could stand. I was carried into our car by ambulance staff and my husband drove me to the hospital around 2am. Once admitted I was given morphine + other painkillers and the nice travel nurse was attentive. I was asked to empty my bladder, so I was put in a wheelchair which re-aggravated the nerves and then put on the loo by which time I was screaming in pain. The nice nurse pressed the emergency button but no one came. With my leg buckling underneath me and the pain putting me into a state of fainting, the nurse had to leave me and run to the corridor and call for help. They came with a bed and 3 people dragged me on to it and returned me to my cubicle. More morphine administered I went for MRI. When the results came back the Doctor said you don t need an operation so you must leave!I asked how can I cope with this much pain, she had no answer. A male nurse came in and said you have to go, where is your husband. I said he was on his way to the Kaiser clinic in town to get another prescription filled for the opioids since you at the hospital won t provide anything and Kaiser are closed at the weekend and I won t make it through to Monday without a refill. He said if he takes too long we will just have to put you out on the curb!I called my husband and told him to get me now, knowing I would have to forgo being able to get any pain medication for the weekend. The staff and in particular this male nurse were unfriendly, unsympathetic, rude and just plain horrible!

Overall, I've been pleased with my care. I transferred my ongoing cancer treatment to the KCH oncology infusion center in July 2022. The nurses have been consistently kind, caring and professional. Administrative staffing was stretched way too thin during the computer system transition. I did have to persist and be my own advocate to get the correct referral to a breast cancer specialist in Honolulu. It took 2 months. Recently Miko was added to the oncology staff. She's a great addition--consistently positive, kind, efficient, and demonstrates warm caring.I've also had three visits to the ER. The triage nurses on duty have been excellent. The visits were not for serious injuries. I didn't wait long before I saw an excellent doctor and the kind support staff. A kitchen knife cut, cellulitis, and0 a toe requiring stitches. The toe injury occurred on my walk to the entrance from my parking spot. I had planned to get a blood test. I went to the ER instead. I peeled several layers of skin off my big toe after tripping on your sidewalk. I got stitches. The parking situation is not acceptable..Yesterday I saw a mother alone with 2 young boys, one hurt. Obviously, she couldn't drop the child at emergency. She had to find parking far from the entrance She stopped to ask me if there was a way to cut through and get to emergency faster. There isn't.This hospital has areas needing serious upgrades. My understanding is most of the funding goes to Hilo. We need and deserve a good hospital on the Kona side of the island. Please create better awareness of your funding needs within our communities. Please explain how community members can help KCH get the funding you need for building renovations, adequate staffing to provide timely care, and increased parking. Please

We understand the frustration and inconvenience caused and take your comments very seriously. Please reach out to our Quality Office at 808-322-6976. Please know that we are actively working on addressing these issues, including exploring solutions for additional accessible and convenient parking options for our patients and their families. We are grateful for your support and feedback. Thank you and take care!

I had an excellent experience with the OB ward at KCH. From the prenatal classes and orientation tour through to the actual delivery experience and recovery days, the KCH team did a great job. The nursing staff are attentive and so caring, I felt like we were amongst friends the whole time. In recovery so many different support specialists came to help, from lactation consultant to community resources social worker to administrative staff helping with paperwork. The facilities were comfortable and the meals were tasty and nutritious. A special shout-out to the night nurses for taking excellent care of us new moms and babies! I feel lucky to have delivered at KCH.
