Avoid this hospital. My 82 year old brother in law just stayed there 2 weeks ago after an auto accident. After checking him with 104 temperature they never bathed him or fed him. He ask for water the next day. He was discharged with mud all over his body and clothes with a 104 temperature. He had no car and lived by himself and in Raleigh. Disgusting!!!

Accepted Insurance

UNC Health Johnston works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Clients who are exiting detox or stepping down from intensive inpatient care typically transition directly into outpatient treatment. Outpatient programs are designed to allow clients to either re-enter or remain in their communities while receiving robust, personalized care. Many facilities offer evening, night, or weekend services to accommodate clients' home and work schedules. The most common outpatient treatment modalities include psychotherapy, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
inpatient iconInpatient
Clients receiving treatment at an inpatient rehab facility are typically in early recovery or are at heightened risk of relapse. Clients in inpatient care remain at the facility for the duration of their program, enabling them to focus solely on their recovery. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive psychotherapy, often including group and family counseling as well as one-on-one sessions. Recovery-focused life skills education is another common service. Many rehabs also offer evidence-based holistic therapies.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services can provide customized interventions tailored to the needs of the individual and family. An intervention specialist can design and conduct a drug intervention in North Carolina that encourages the individual to enter treatment in a non-coercive manner. The specialist will meet with the family to plan the intervention, then provide expert insights to guide the process and appropriate follow-up care.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Individuals in early recovery often require 24-hour clinical care in North Carolina. This supervised care typically includes medications to treat specific withdrawal symptoms, which vary based on the substance abused. For example, staff may provide sleep aids to treat insomnia in patients who are addicted to marijuana. For those overcoming a cocaine use disorder, anti-depressants may be prescribed to manage mood swings. Other medications may also be provided to treat addiction-related health issues.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
A medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive drugs and alcohol from your body. A team of licensed medical professionals will look after you 24/7 to monitor your health, help minimize discomfort, and provide medications if necessary to alleviate any withdrawal symptoms. This process is typically the first step in your recovery and may take around 5-7 days, although length will depend on your individual needs.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy helps you reclaim your life after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Therapists help to process these memories, which promotes emotional healing and reduces anxiety in social situations. This improves your overall well being and increases your self confidence.

During nutrition therapy in North Carolina, you'll work with a nutritionist to develop a dietary plan. Medical professionals will provide input based on your health needs. You'll learn to create goals for nutrition and develop the skills you need to meet them.

I just left the ER with my Husband and we had the most amazing experience we had Dr.Kathy and she was the MOST amazing nurse practitioner we have ever experienced. She was beyond helpful for our situation, she was present and didn t disappear for hours she would always check in. Super friendly and funny and was very informative. If i could pick a ER doctor everytime SHE would be the ONE !

UNC has improved this place. I have been admitted several times and have always found the staff, from every department from food service to housekeeping, nursing through MD to be excellent, professional, kind, friendly, helpful, and enjoyable. I was discharged today after a three-day stay for very low sodium. I was treated professionally, kindly, and compassionately. I have nothing negative to say for any of the UNC Hospitals from Smithfield to Clayton to Rex to Chapel Hill for over 40 years. Thank you to all UNC staff. I would not be here today without them!

Go to Wakemed or Duke this place is garbage. The security guard did more for my son then the nursing staff. My son was in so much pain that he dropped to the floor, and so many staff walked by and did nothing until a ladies came out to tell my son that staff had complained that he needed to get up even though laying down help calmed the pain. I had to ask her for a bed or a place he could lay down and she just mentioned they were busy. I though triage was to assess and then take in the most severe. They are just filling beds and collecting money. They had people with headaches and sprain ankles go before my son. I didn't wanted to take him there, because I can't stand this hospital, but my son insisted. Worse emergency department ever!

It s been 5 days since I ve been discharged from the hospital and I have to write about the excellent care that I received while so sick that I was almost ready to die. The doctors that did not give up on me, Dr. Pudota and Dr.Anand, showed so much devotion for their patients, including me,that I do not know how to say thank you. The rest of the team (nurses, assistants, cleaning ladies,) were a good part of me getting better. They were always ready to help me and to encourage me with smiles on their face. I don t remember all their names, but the ones that moved me with their kindness were Danielah, Christy, Paula, Katelyn, Emma, Amber, Crystal, Carolyn, and Danna. And a big thank you to Dr. Kanwar from the Emergency Room (at Johnston) that sent me to this hospital. To the ones that I don t remember their names, thank you!

Very good experience. I was concerned about taking my mom to this hospital for tests after reading some of the reviews. I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone was friendly and competent. Special thanks to Elly in cardiology for being so compassionate during mom's ultrasound. Knowing certain areas would be painful, she forewarning her before hitting those spots and got the images quickly. The radiology staff were also friendly and efficient.

Had the best experience with all the staff at UNC Johnson. Went in since I was 6 weeks pregnant but was having lots of bleeding and abdominal pain. They quickly got me back for lab work. Waited about 2 hours before getting a room. Then after that everything went pretty quickly. PA that came in was very helpful and gave me some good insight, she ordered and US which then showed I had an ectopic pregnancy and it has ruptured. They had to call in the on call Surgeon who was in Clayton and also call in all the on call surgery team. They got me in surgery and gave my husband the update when I was out and got me into a room to recover! They only kept me for a short amount of time and then I was able to come home. Thank you to each and everyone one of you that helped me! I wish I could remember names but I was so out of it and upset that I don t remember.
