About Johnson Park Center (JPC)
Johnson Park Center provides many services to the Utica and surrounding community in New York. This includes youth outreach and drop-in centers, nutrition programs, special needs housing, and supportive programming.
Their programs operate on the ABC philosophy. This means that each individual is Accountable for their own actions, sets Boundaries in their own lives, is committed to change and makes the Decision to do it. Children, youth, and women also have housing options.
There are after school and education programs, as well as youth nutrition programs and recreational activities that promote leadership, teamwork, and learning in a fun and safe environment. The youth drop-in center has indoor and outdoor activity spaces. There’s a playground and basketball court for neighborhood use and a center where children and families can access literacy, mental health and educational programs. They also have workshops and programming to help individuals develop coping and life skills so they can be successful now and in the future.
Other programs include three supportive housing options. One is an emergency shelter that is open to both traditional and non-traditional families. There’s a family shelter that offers 18 beds as well as homes that are completely furnished and ready for families to live in. To qualify for the Family Shelter families must meet TANF low-income requirements.
The other two programs are for at-risk and homeless women. The Johnson Park Apartments for homeless women and children offers apartments with anywhere from one to four bedrooms and a wide range of support resources to help women and their families have a bright and healthy future. Women who are accepted here can concentrate on her life goals, sobriety, and education.
They also have a supportive transitional program that includes six apartments to help women adjust to life while in recovery. Their last housing program is for chronically homeless single women who are 18+ and have chronic housing instability. They’re provided with a place to live, counseling, therapeutic programs, educational, parenting and employment resources and mental health management. Those struggling with addiction and substance abuse issues can find the resources and support here to help them find happiness in sobriety.
Levels of Care
Medically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
Inpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
Sober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

Treatment
Alcoholism
The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.
Drug Addiction
When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.
Dual Diagnosis
Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
Opioid Addiction
Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.
Substance Abuse
Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.
Clinical Services
Trauma Therapy
Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.
