About Indian Rivers Behavioral Health

In Tuscaloosa Alabama, Indian Rivers Behavioral Health provides a variety of care options for the treatment of drug use disorders. They offer outpatient treatment as well as women’s inpatient and specific women’s outpatient care. They can treat both mental health and substance use concerns for children, adults, and families. The mental health outpatient program is for adults 18 and older. Recovery symptom reduction, illness management, and stabilization are the main goals of this program. Personalized care is provided to each individual by means of initial assessments which are essential in identifying the best therapeutic interventions. They provide a variety of services such as family therapy, group therapy, individual therapy, and psychiatric evaluation in addition to educational initiatives designed to improve public awareness of mental illness.

The substance use outpatient program includes two 2 hour group sessions per week. Their Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) which consist of three weekly 3-hour group sessions, are available for individuals in need of a more intensive approach. These programs are made to accommodate different schedules; morning, afternoon and evening sessions are offered, and they have coed as well as gender specific groups.

Indian Rivers puts a special emphasis on treating women, offering a women’s inpatient program as well as a women-specific outpatient program. Pregnant women are given priority for care. The programs are similar to the other general outpatient and IOP programs but focus on the unique requirements of women in recovery and provide a setting that encourages understanding and support.

Indian Rivers also provides outpatient and intensive outpatient services to participants in local initiatives like the Second Chance program and the 24th Judicial Circuits Drug Court. This partnership not only increases the availability of resources but also incorporates therapeutic support into the larger legal system. In addition to closely working with judges and district attorneys, case managers make sure that clients’ voices are heard during crucial stages of recovery and therapists may actively participate in court proceedings as advocates for their clients.

If I could I would give a zero but have to put a a star. I was at breckenridge for 2 years dealt with Kelley, roneka, dubose, Trina, Tina, and destiny. There was constant chaos. There is a significant amount of verbal abuse. I guess they think they can treat people like trash bc they have a degree and the think we have no ability to say anything. We have went to advocate and everything it didn t work. My roomate was very nasty we had infestation of bugs and they would not teach her how to clean and help her. People learned nothing there not even me. I had to learn on my own. It was a waste of 2 years being there. I finally have a great apartment on my own and I am loving it. I feel horrible if you ever have to deal with any of these people. Don t put your family in breckenridge. It will only make things worse.

I have had 2 screw ups with my prescriptions. Both times I contacted them for a renewal because my appointment was 30 days beyond running out of meds. The switch board offered no help at all saying that the person who handles that is off for the day. Called to leave a message with nurse practitioner who was also off for the day. Not the least bit of concern at all by the staff. Went in person, still no help.

Nurse practitioner messed up my med dosage, so I tried calling the clinic nurse. She didn t pick up, so I tried calling the front desk. No one picked up there either. So I decided I could wait until my appointment. Found out today that my appointment for next week has been canceled and rescheduled for NOVEMBER. Tried calling the front desk for a medication refill. Again, no one picked up. Don t go here unless you want what is easily the most negligent care that you will ever receive.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab is designed primarily for clients exiting detox, people in early recovery, and those at an elevated risk of relapse. Participants reside at the rehab facility until they complete their treatment program. This allows them to focus solely on their recovery, away from outside distractions, stressors, and addiction triggers. Inpatient drug rehab typically involves extensive addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, and complementary therapies.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs are designed to provide support to you after completing an addiction treatment program. These programs are highly customized and evolve with your changing needs. You'll partner with staff at the treatment center to identify any specific medical, behavioral, and social services needed to support your sustained sobriety. Aftercare services may include peer coaching, career counseling, and other personalized support.
12-step icon12-Step
12 step programs are often considered the standard model for addiction recovery. They're based on the use of spiritual principles to support a gradual psychological, emotional, and spiritual shift to remediate the root causes of one's addiction. Treatment depends primarily on per coaching (sponsorship) and group recovery meetings. Though rooted in spiritual principles, participants do not need to be religious and sessions are non-denominational. Specialized groups, including meetings for seniors, teens, and family members, are often available.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
A drug intervention in Alabama is an organized attempt to convince someone they have a substance use issue and that they need treatment. During an intervention, loved ones share their concerns about the person's substance use and encourage them to get help. A professional can provide guidance and support for this effort through intervention services, to help participants avoid missteps and increase the success of the intervention.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides comprehensive treatment to those who do not require 24/7 monitoring and offers a higher level of care than outpatient programs. Often referred to as "day treatment" patients typically attend sessions a minimum of 20 hours weekly, allowing clients to return home each day. PHP treatment is often covered by insurance and can provide daily therapeutic sessions and services such as relapse prevention and medication management.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Medically assisted detox is often the first step of addiction treatment. At the medical detox level of care, you are weaning your body off drugs and/or alcohol under the care of licensed medical professionals who constantly monitor your health and treat any potential withdrawal symptoms, sometimes with the aid of medication (like Suboxone or Vivitrol).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Alabama provides medical or psychotherapeutic treatment for drug dependency. Methods of treatment often include a combination of medication, counseling, and recreational therapies.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

So thankful that they do everything they can to help you considering how little funds they have. Just don't expect very complete treatment. I also luckily got a very good therapist that has been very good to me.

I would leave zero stars if it were an option. A month ago I had an issue with the front desk people and they were by far the rudest people I have encountered working in the mental health industry. They refused to help me and proceeded to hang up on me several times. I have never experienced something like. it is clear nobody cares if you re getting your medicine or not they are simply there for a paycheck. I went to my appointment today and discovered that my dr no longer works there. They didn t inform me of that at all and were rude and unhelpful acting like I should have already known? For people that work in the mental health industry they do not know how to interact with people, do yourself a favor and save your time and money. I ll be finding a new facility to go to as I d recommend to others if you value getting the right medication/medication on time/actually being able to see your dr/ being treated like a person and not trash.

They treat their staff terribly. There is no work/life balance, which is to be expected when you're working with clients 24/7, but at the very least if you say you're going to be available to help, do that. The training is subpar as they hardly tell you what to do. You have to figure it out or ask other assistant coordinators. They are not understanding of family issues or even personal medical emergencies but wholeheartedly expect you to respect their time when they have things going on. It's a revolving door because the management treats their best workers terribly, and then expects them to work at their best. Always on call with no staff to cover. Even when you're not on call, the person on call doesn't answer so you might as well be the worker. Not worth the pay at all. It doesn't even pay a livable wage. Things need to change in this organization from a managerial standpoint before they have no workers. The clients are wonderful and have typical mental health issues for their diagnoses. Truly the best group of men I had the pleasure of caring for. The management though? Nope. Again, fast food pays better.

Indian Rivers has saved my life on more than one occasion. I depend on their services for my medications and treatment. Staffing is inconsistent sometimes but they always come thru and care for me.

In one residential program they block the only access to a scooter or a wheelchair. The lowered place for entrance to the sidewalk is blocked. I m in a scooter and it is purposefully blocked to prevent me from visiting. I have went to the manager as well as those above them. The last thing said was INDIAN RIVERS REQUIRES THEM TO PARK THE VAN IN THE SPOT THAT BLOCKS ACCESS TO HANDICAP ENTRANCE. Bad for me and any other handicap visitor or client. Never seen such disrespect

If I could zero stars I would. This place is among the least caring and least helpful mental health centers I've ever seen. The workers don't care and damn near seem to actively avoid their patients instead of meeting with them and listening to their issues wih their medicine. This place will be the death of someone some day and I hope they're held responsible

It seems that in mental health there can be a revolving door as to the help direly needed. Options are limited as time goes by in a program where reliance upon a staff, that sometimes is inefficient, to aid in the issues a client becomes a treacherous ordeal of survival. It seems also that there is a never ending battle for intelligence that more or less clients are used as objects of the staff's educational goals thus leaving them to waste away in the allotted programs. Clients shouldn't be considered as second class citizens as often the case is where they should be mutually respected among the staff and not demoralized. Personally I have known Indian Rivers Mental Health for over 39 years where the more things that change about their operations basically they remain the same.
