About Hutchings Psychiatric Center

Hutchings Psychiatric Center in Syracuse, New York, is one of 24 state run psychiatric facilities that operates in collaboration with the local mental health system. The center is about five hours from Toronto, New York City, Boston, and Montreal. They provide addiction services and psychiatric care to adults and psychiatric care for children and adolescents.

The addiction medicine service provides short term treatment to address drug and alcohol addiction and other substance use disorders. They are equipped to treat co-occurring mental health conditions, called dual diagnosis. Treatment for dual diagnosis is specialized and requires integrated care provided simultaneously for addiction and mental health conditions.

Your customized treatment program may include an outpatient detox program to provide support with withdrawal symptoms and monitor your progress. Programs also include psychotherapy and medication assisted treatment (MAT) with referrals to other providers in the local area. You receive detoxification services and addiction treatment at the same office. Their program completion rate is over 80%, and more than 50% are still sober one month after the treatment has ended.

To be accepted into their program for treatment, you must be capable of scheduling your own appointment, and you must bring a support person with you to your first appointment. Because the addiction medicine program is part of a teaching hospital, your appointment is usually scheduled with the attending physician and other interns or residents. They accept most major insurance providers and will check your insurance information before starting treatment. If you arrive for your first appointment without a support person, you will be denied care.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Stop allowing patients with severe schizophrenia to have virtual appointments. This is becoming neglect at this point and allowing those with this severe condition to go years without an in person exam to be able to see what actually state they are in is criminal. We have watched our brother get so much worse in the last two years and we have no idea what to do to help as this place has stopped caring. We are so scared from the obviously Ill behavior that my brother has displayed for years at this point (pandemic meant he was able to get away with not being seen regularly or at all). We have no resources to get him help and this place is supposed to be treating him but he has gotten so so much worse in the few two years it is scary. Something needs to be done and with cases like his (that was really scary thb) he needs to be physically seen and resources (like who to contact) need to given to the families for when things get obviously bad. Please step it up and help him!! They are really just leaving those who come here for help behind during this pandemic.

The first time I went here was for being suicidal. This place helped me honor my life. I was treated like a human being and the staff were very nice. Second time I came here was for being a violent person. It was a better alternative than jail. It was my "scared straight" program. About a year later I was a much, much, much better person. Thank you for helping me straighten my life out! Only negatives I give this place is it has increased my paranoia of going back every year in October. I also had a HUGE fear of the police from 2016-2020.

As someone who use to be a patient there, I am very disappointed by their service. In the hospital you ll mostly talk to therapeutic assistances which have little medical training. These people are not helpful in any way and could ruin treatment. Many times I see the TAs making fun of the patients, including jokes about suicide and depression. Unlike other psychiatric centers you will barely see a psychiatrist, I have gone months without seeing one. The psychologists tend to be unfit for analysis, and have little compantance themselves. Medical nurses are very unprofessional, and consistanly give a misdiagnosis. One misdiagnosis led to the death of a 13 year old girl, whom I knew while inpatient. Sometimes I was abused inpatient when refused food, because the medication I was taking made me too tired to wake up on time. Nothing could be done about this since I only see my psychiatrist once a month. Overall after being inpatient for 6 months, I feel mistreated and worthless. I was inpatient for a suicide attempt, in which I recieved very little treatment. If you have a family member or loved one with depression, please send them to a better hospital. Hutchings does not offer the therapy needed to rehabilitate anyone who suffers from mental illness. Sadly Hutchings is an awful place that does more harm than good.

I left here more suicidal and terrified than when I entered. The staff was rude and made fun if us. The psychiatrist made me pretend I believed in God or else he thought I wasn't mentally stable. Once I started agreeing with his religious statements he said he thought I was doing better. The boys and girls always were doing inappropriate things to each other and the staff didn't care. When one of the patients got upset and was threatening to throw something (mind you both staff and other patients were making fun of her often and she was not aggressive until about a week or two into her stay because of their actions) the staff ran behind the other patients and left them exposed to be attacked. They also changed my medicine after I explicitly said I didn't want to.
