About Hoffman Homes for Youth

Hoffman Homes for Youth is a nonprofit center in Littletown, Pennsylvania. Established in 1910, they have helped teens, young adults, and families with substance abuse and behavioral health issues. They have a broad range of inpatient and outpatient programs. There’s also spiritual and academic support.

Clients live at the center throughout their stay in the residential program. Staff are on hand 24 hours a day to provide support and supervision. Clients follow a daily schedule of recovery activities, including therapy (individual, group, and family), specialty groups, skills building, and education. Arts, animal, and equine therapy are also available for creative kids. The center was originally a spiritual site, and spiritual care is part of the program today.

You’ll have access to video games, television, radio, and books. Outdoor recreation can include fishing, soccer, softball, an indoor gym, and ping pong. There’s also group events, including trips to movie theaters, bowling alleys, and the YMCA. Phones are recording equipment, however, are not allowed.

Outpatient care delivers mental health and addiction therapy on a part time basis. You live at home and visit the facility on a regular schedule to participate in therapy groups. The program can last up to six months.

The transitional housing program provides you with additional support as you transition back to your communities. In addition to therapy activities, clients can also receive career coaching, primary medical care, and potential enrollment in the Hoffman Academy. This school is accredited and provides grades 1-12 with academic, social, and technology courses.

Hoffman Homes Inc. has grown over the years in terms of programs and opportunities for the youth/young adults that come to Hoffman Homes as part of their path of healing. The community at Hoffman Homes is focused on collaboration, safety, and respect. There are a variety of clinical opportunities at Hoffman Homes from Creative Therapies (Pet, Equine, Art, and Drama) to programs such as the Therapeutic Shelter and Transitional Living Program. These are in addition to a thriving on grounds school, known as Hoffman Academy. As Hoffman Homes continues to expand into working more within the community, the mission of Hoffman Homes is still alive and well.

Hoffman home is NOT the place I would send my child to by choice. It was cyf and judge ordered my daughter go to this RTF...some staff very very nice and other staff extremely rude (Supervisor Katie, therapist alexis, and staff member Lucas all EXTREMELY RUDE) poor communication and Supervisor Katie ALWAYS interrupting my phone calls with my daughter and me...it got so bad I had to ask that Supervisor Katie not be allowed to Supervise my phone calla anymore because the amount of rudeness she has.The therapist CANT seem to follow a judges court order and the therapist feels the need to make up her own rules and court order(therapist Alexis)...My daughter hasn't liked it from day 1 there and has been there for over a year...if you can help it and it's not court ordered DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO THIS PROGRAM if you want your child to get help

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient rehabs specialize in providing comprehensive care for clients who choose to remain in their homes and communities during treatment. Their services may include transitional support for clients stepping down from intensive inpatient programming. Ambulatory medical detox may be provided for clients at low risk for withdrawal complications. Many programs include evening, night, and weekend services to accommodate clients who are working professionals or caregivers. Addiction counseling and life skills training are common treatment modalities.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
postpartum-program thumbnail image
Postpartum Program
The postpartum period is a sensitive time, especially for women in addiction recovery. Rehabs with specialized programs for new mothers will offer compassionate, personalized care to meet each client's needs as they transition from pregnancy to this season of life. Care teams may include obstetricians, pediatricians, and social workers working collaboratively to give women, children, and families a healthy future.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

My daughter spent 9 months at Hoffman homes. Over all we had a good experience. Of course with any program like this , there are some bumps in the road but staff worked to take care of any concerns we had. My daughter loved spending time with the horses and other animals and developed a good relationship with some of the house staff who she gained trust in to help her get to where she is today. The program was a huge success for her as she will tell you if it was not for Hoffman homes she would not be here today. She is working hard towards her goals and her future plans now. None of this would have been possible with out the help she received at Hoffman Homes!

This place presents so wonderfully on paper and in theory. However the truth is your children are presented more trauma when there. Staff to begin with are extremely under trained to handle children with trauma or disabilities. They behave more so as corrections officers than mental health workers. Most have trauma themselves as they still currently cut themselves and have scars for kids to see. They verbally and mentally abuse these children. But the worst are the espi. They out right abuse these kids. Slam them in walls and into the ground for any inconvenience. Now the superiors have nothing to do with the day to day of these kids. The supervisors are baby sitters of the staff because they are children themselves mentally. The place as a whole is trash. If your kid is there take them out. If you work for the state close this place or take over it, because the board and ceo do no care. We met with the ceo one time and was told this is not a time to discuss hoffman and it's practices but instead for her to know you. Close hoffman. Fyi the boys on "campus get it the worst. They live in a stated of fear 24/7 because they are threatened and or assaulted. Sexual assaults from peer on peer are swept under the rug and just last month a child killed themselves while 1 foot away from a trained staff member. They were able to bring her back but the point is this place is horrible for children

While Hoffman Homes respects the opinion of individuals, what is written in this comment needs to be addressed. First and foremost, we find it highly inappropriate for a staff to speak of their coworkers limitations and disabilities. Every staff is interviewed and vetted prior to hire, which includes reference and clearance checks, and regulations are followed in terms of hiring practices. We value every staff and what gifts they bring to this organization. The work we do is unique and challenging and it is understandable that not everyone brings the same experience when it comes to working at Hoffman Homes. To belittle your coworkers is both unprofessional and disappointing. Surveys are given at every training asking staff if there are other areas they feel they need education on. Rarely, if ever, do we receive feedback on this. Staff meet regularly with their supervisors and can request additional training. In addition, training requirements are met beyond regulatory requirements. In regard to restraints and escalated incidents, there are cameras in all common areas of the facilities. Documentation is required for each restraint and is reviewed, not only by supervisors internally but also by regulatory and contracting bodies. As a mandated reporter, we are concerned that you are posting information about alleged abuse you claim have to have seen yet not reported. Any allegation is reported to childline to include incidents between youth where appropriate, and every incident is investigated by regulatory agencies, to include a review of video footage. What you have noted here is false. In regard to the specific incident, you noted about a youth s attempted suicide is also false and very alarming that you would state this. A specific note from the CEO: I meet with two staff each week. I also keep track of those I meet with, and you are not a staff member I have met with, so I am unclear how you can say that I would not allow you to speak about concerns when we have never met. Given the shift that you work, you are also not here during business hours so to state that supervisors are not involved with the youth each day is also false. I regularly see supervisors engaging in activities and interacting with both staff and youth on this campus. I am interested in understanding why you are still employed with an organization you claim is trash. We will happily accept your resignation as I would not want an employee here who is giving false information to the community about the great work that is being done.

Hoffman Homes for Youth is a Psychiatric Treatment facility. My experience with Hoffman Homes extends back for well over a decade. As a member of the HH Board I personally have witnessed the positive impact the counseling, treatment, education and residential experience has had on the youth that come to us. Our on campus Academy provides a safe, structured learning environment that gives them the opportunity to be academically successful. ( some of them for the first time in their young lives). Our children often come to us from dysfunctional home situations. Many have experienced trauma and outright abuse. At point of entry our children go through a comprehensive psychiatric, medical and social assessment. An Individual Assessment Plan is developed to help our counselors, mental health workers ,educators and staff help that child work toward a healthy life. At point of entry our team of mental health professionals, medical professionals, educators and treatment specialists design a treatment plan which identifies goals for positive behavioral change. Overall, by the completion of their stay at HH approximately 80% of our youth have achieved their goals for behavioral change. The behavioral change is not easy nor quick. It comes about through the tireless efforts of the child, our dedicated staff of mental health workers, medical staff, teachers, counselors and therapists. But the point is, these kids can have a better life and Hoffman Homes and its dedicated staff help these young people toward a positive personal future. It is pretty amazing.Merris HarveyBoard Member at Hoffman Homes

I just visited the area this last week or so to camp with my son and since we were so close I took him past and explained what everything was and which house I lived in and the experiences I had during my stay. Still, hands down, my favorite placement (and I went to plenty), even after 15 years. Thanks so much for what you do .

Response from the owner3 months ago
Thank you for sharing your experience and memories with us! It s wonderful to hear that Hoffman Homes has left such a positive and lasting impact on you, even after 15 years. We are grateful for your kind words and delighted that you had the chance to share your memories with your son. Your story is a testament to the dedication and care our team provides. Thank you for taking the time to visit and for your continued support. It means the world to us!

I have had many years of personal experience with Hoffman Homes, the staff and programs. Anyone seeking mental health services would be amazed at how caring the day to day mental health workers are. Whether you need residential, day or outpatient services this should be your first place to explore. Hoffman Homes (HH) strives to ensure each child receives individual therapy from Masters Degree therapists, two psychiatrists and numerous RN and LPN staff, mental health professionals and an ongrounds fully accredited school. Group therapy sessions are specific to the specific needs of the group and multiple pet and equestrian sessions are part of the child's individual treatment plan. After care services of group homes, transitional and independent living services are also available for young adults. I would HIGHLY recommend HH for anyone seeking to improve the quality of life for any child struggling with mental health issues.Brenda McCabe

I wish that I could give Hoffman Homes way more than just five stars, but I guess five will have to do. As a former troubled youth that was living in constant turmoil, I was given the opportunity to live at Hoffman Homes for over a year and a half in the Emmanuel Residence. Not only was I shown an incredible amount of support, but I was taught things that live with me almost 20 years later in my adult life. From my counselor, to the residence staff, teachers, nurses & special horse therapist - everyone had a significant impact on my life and I am forever grateful for each and every one of them. Hoffman Homes made me who I am today, and I am confident that without them I would not have grown to be the successful adult that I am now. I often find myself reminiscing about my stay there and wondering if the children there to this day know how lucky they are to have access to so many therapeutic resources, and how incredibly fortunate they will be in the long run to benefit from everything that Hoffman Homes can offer if you make the most of what if given to you.THANK YOU, thank you from the bottom of my heart to Hoffman Homes and their entire staff for changing my life. For changing so many lives. And for caring about so many children who continue to need your organization. YOU make a difference

I'm incredibly impressed by the dedication of the staff and administration to providing appropriate treatment for youth who are dealing with really difficult trauma, behavioral health problems, and emotional turmoil. While not a perfect program, they are constantly striving for the best outcome for the young people in their care. We are blessed to have such an organization so close to our church and community.

hoffman homes does a terrible job at their background checks and they re constantly ignoring shady things that their staff do because of how understaffed they are. look up some of the things that previous staff have done, and you will reconsider sending your child here

Response from the owner3 months ago
Here at Hoffman Homes, we are proud of the services that we provide to those in need. The hiring of our staff includes childline, FBI, and state police background checks as required. We also require three references; one of which is expected to be a former supervisor. Regarding the comment that we are understaffed, we always meet required ratios. Currently we are 90% full of full time and part time direct care staff.
