About Hillcrest Youth Services

Hillcrest Youth Services is in Evansville, Indiana. They date back to 1871 and cater to young people who have behavioral and mental health needs, including substance abuse. They provide residential and outpatient programs for children and teens from ages 10 to 21. All clients are referred by the Department of Child Services.

Residential services provide youths with a whole range of care. You’ll have primary healthcare, classroom education, social workers to assist with family troubles and self esteem. You can build confidence as you participate in sports and other activities, talk with counselors, and learn to love and accept yourself. If you’re in a crisis or need emergency care, there’re shelters in place to assist with basic necessities.

The substance abuse program is for teenagers, ages 12-18. These kids’ll receive psychosocial education so they better understand addictions and the impact on their health. They’ll work to reduce cravings and find healthier outlets for stress and anger. That way, they’ll have a better path to achieve their life goals.

Other programs promote healthy families, hostility management, and develop peer support groups. Their goal is that you’ll be more comfortable around your age group, and you won’t feel alone. Resources are available for families, communities, and church groups to form networks to help you heal, depending on your needs.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Assisting a child in developing and/or maintaining a relationship with his or her family is a priority at Hillcrest unless it is specifically prohibited by the placing agency. Regular visitation is encouraged, and the family is invited to attend scheduled meetings such as treatment planning and reviews. The family is advised of any changes in medical or emotional status of the child and is encouraged to offer input and feedback following any visitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Great staff that really care about the kids that come through there. It is a tough job sometimes but they persevere and continue to provide more than adequate services to the children under the age of 18. God Bless. And, thank you for taking care of these children that sometime know of no home, hardly any family, and are troubled within the system of the state.

I stayed here for a week and the conditions are awful. Kids there are extremely toxic to each other and the staff fuel it, a child there was literally itching so bad from the pests and was never treated for her condition. The staff there are extremely unprofessional and rude, they treat every second on the clock like it s lunch break. I never even received majority of my belongings because the staff practically refused to intake anything. I was never rude and treated every person around me with all the respect I could muster for them but the staff treated me like an enemy, I later went to a different residential that actually worked with your family to find the issue and being here just hindered me in every way. I saw my family roughly three times and there was no councilor or mental health professional there to observe our interactions so I never worked on anything involving my mental health issues. I only was able to resolve these minor issues in a different residential that actually hired someone mature and capable of working with children on a schedule instead of turning on lifetime movies and releasing them like wild dogs. This place needs a complete 180 in order to be a functional residential. I m surprised DCS hasn t shut this place down yet. There is so much staff on staff drama it s like high school, they obviously are in need of team building exercise because the children see how much of a fragmented group they are and use it to their advantage.
