About Highland Rivers

Highland Rivers provides comprehensive outpatient support and recovery services for addiction treatment. They serve adults and youth in Cartersville, Georgia with specialized services for veterans.

Their substance use treatment is based on the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) philosophy. This describes addiction as a chronic medical condition that is treatable. It involves interactions between your life experience, genetics, environment and brain circuitry.

Here, they use the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s 10 Guiding Principles of Recovery as a framework for treatment. This means they take a person-centered approach to help you independently manage your symptoms and cope with the challenges in life.

The veterans program offers hope to veterans who are living with substance use disorders or mental health challenges. They serve all veterans and their family members who may have limited income, or resources or are uninsured.

Services include counseling and a specialized engagement team that provides peer support, case management, and community referrals. Based on your individual needs, veterans can receive treatment through a variety of services.

They also provide treatment for children, adolescents, and emerging adults who are affected by mental health or addiction. This includes a school-based mental health program, outpatient services, and a recovery clubhouse where adolescents can learn coping skills to prevent continued use of psychoactive substances. If you need a more intensive level of care then you can ask about their residential recovery programs. While this location offers outpatient counseling only, there are residential options available for women, mothers, and men.

You know the really bad jokes people tell? Well this place is the punchline. Very disorganized, bad systems, hard to get into, setting up an appointment is so ungodly as well. Not to mention if you re not in the system you have to be up here no later than 7:30 to stand in line to even get in to get in the system. Bring entertainment because you are going to be waiting a long time

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehabs feature intensive clinical supervision and a highly structured and supportive environment, meaning they are especially well suited for clients in early recovery and those at risk of relapse. Clients reside at the treatment facility and engage in various therapeutic sessions throughout the day, including addiction counseling and recovery-focused life skills training. Many programs also offer evidence-based complementary therapies, such as meditation and massage.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
The Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (SAIOP) helps individuals learn how to manage life issues and day-to- day living without the use of mood- or mind-altering substances or drugs. Program services promote recovery, self-sufficiency, development of support networks and other important life skills to enhance mental health and reduce the risk of needing inpatient treatment. Family involvement is encouraged to assist in maintaining the goals of the individual, and to help develop or re-establish family relationships and support.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

A quality drug rehab in Georgia can help you overcome addiction. This environment is designed to help you address the complex issues contributing to drug dependence. The goal of treatment is to give you the tools you need to make a full recovery.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I was told that something that happened throughout my childhood never happened by the lady who prescribes medication which was extremely inappropriate on her part and invalidating which was completely disgusting. I believe that I was misdiagnosed too because I was going through A LOT at the time and needed someone to talk to about my issues and they slapped me with having bipolar when I don t really have the symptoms of a person who has it, but I do know people who have bipolar one and I do not show the same symptoms of bipolar. I was just going through a REALLY hard time and I was still trying to process my emotions from everything that happened ( I had a miscarriage,I was a milwife and still trying to transition from the military life back to civilian life, lost my marriage, I was cheated on, etc ) I was actually diagnosed with CPTSD and Dissociation back in another state too and when I brought up that it could possibly be something else too the lady who prescribed the medication was acting off and completely switched up on me.

I'm really upset and have been trying for MONTHS to calm down. My favorite provider, DANNY LEE left the practice and myself.I believe several other providers left as well.I needed meds renewed, so I saw an affiliate provider via telehealth. She forgot even though I reminded her twice of my night dose. Since JANUARY 2023, I have been calling about this.No call backs,no email nothing. I called front desk...other counties within Hyland and still nothing. I must have left a bazillion voicemails and nothing. It is now July and still nothing.Insert a bazillion curses here ..................Also whom received all these voice-mails?.Hyland this is my life... 0 stars but that was not an option. Scum

I would say that I will not be returning to Highland Rivers, but quite honestly, I couldn t get an appointment even if I wanted to. Their scheduling rules are terrible. They only schedule week of (or so they re supposed to). Every time I call, I get told I can t be scheduled because they re full for the week and instead to call back Monday the following week. So I d wait to call when they told me and the schedule would be full again, and told Call next week. AGAIN! They could not care any less that I am sobbing on the phone just begging for an appointment, completely out of my medication and experiencing withdrawals that keep me from being able to function, while pregnant as well. They don t try to help me in the slightest despite their own screw ups with the schedule. All I want is freaking 2 minute telemedicine call with a doctor to say No problems? Great. I ll renew your meds. Such a joke. Please don t waste your time if you have serious mental illnesses that you need to be medicated for.

I was very uncomfortable here. It seemed the staff was on vacation behind their desks. The therapist I was assigned to, had very little to offer me and didn't seem to be interested in helping me find solutions.

This place is an amazing opportunity for intensive outpatient services, IF YOU ARE READY for help! all these complaints about this place... We are addicts and we most likely don't have PATIENCE when it comes to getting an appointment with who we need to for our evaluations... Most of us will sit and wait for drugs/alcohol for days... Be thankful we DO have resources.. this place is great
