Harsha Behavioral Center

About Harsha Behavioral Center

Harsha Behavioral Center in Terre Haute, Indiana, is a physician owned psychiatric and addiction center. Their short term inpatient program is open to clients of all ages, and they have a total of 81 beds across their programs. They operate a specialized program for seniors.

Inpatient programs are typically designed to be the most intense level of care available. They often provide long term care for those with severe symptoms. However, the average stay at Harsha Behavioral Center is five to 10 days.

Why the difference? While they provide the same treatment methods as similar facilities, they operate on a shorter timetable. Their goal is to help you achieve stabilization so you can continue on to an outpatient program sooner. That way, you won’t have other areas of your life such as work or school hindered by a lengthy stay. I like this approach because it gets you back to your daily living sooner. But it’s not a fit for everyone, and if your symptoms warrant a lengthy stay you may be referred to another program.

Please never send your loved one here. The only thing they do is lock you in a day room make you eat there and not do anything, but color and play cards at time. They wouldn t give me my medication. The Doctor told me she didn t think I needed it. I was there on lies from a police officer making a false report. They refused to give me my clothes my family brought. They also put my sister could have info on me after I told them she wasn t to know anything. They also refused to let me talk to my therapist that didn t even know I was in there. Then the 18 year old Autistic boy that they done nothing for, besides put him in a Straight jacket and give him a tranquilizer, because he wanted chocolate milk. This place is a insurance scam. They ask you who the first President was and the ones that couldn t get it correct would have to stay more days. I m allergic to all kinds of foods and every meal they would serve me thing s I couldn t eat. Many times I couldn t eat until next meal, but they didn t care. The cops have to be getting a kick back for sending people here on false reports. When I went and confronted the cop. She says what s the big deal your out now. There was a man that came from Linton and he was there 1 day and had them come back and get him. Knowing if he went back to Linton he would have to stay there longer. He didn t care he said this place is worse than prison. I could go on and on about this place. I m really not sure how they are still in business. Yes people seem happy when family comes, because if you don t act happy they add more days on saying your depressed.

Accepted Insurance

Harsha Behavioral Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Illinois Department of Public Aid

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.

Clinical Services

Recreational therapy integrates structured activities into a holistic treatment program to help promote your physical and mental health and well being. You might engage in sports, creative arts, or outdoor adventures as a positive outlet for your stress and emotions. This helps you develop new interests and build a supportive network that helps you maintain long term sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

I was sent here unwillingly from union. I am an international student and was struggling with homesickness. The staff was nice but the experience was traumatising making me want to give in on my dreams and go back home. Doctors twisted things I had said and gave me medication I didn't need. when asking or water I was told not until mealtimes and asking for simple necessities like clean underwear and vaseline for my chapped lips I was told no we can't provide those. some of my clothes that were sent there went missing and no one could find them, my phone screen has cracks in it and its sticky. would not wish this experience on my worst enemy. Doctors wouldn't listen when I was trying to speak the truth. I am glad to be out of that hell hole.I would be woken up to people trying to take my blood in the middle of the night and when I first arrived was made to feel severely uncomfortable when being stripped down and having my piercings ripped out of me

I spent 7 days at Harsha. It was a horrible experience. We spent the entire day in one room and had to use the same restroom as the other patients. There was no physical activity and the groups were not helpful. The only thing that they have going for them is some of the employees. Also, an older patient kept trying to get in my room. Nobody apologized or asked how I was doing. They don't allow the doors to be closed. Oh and they lost my contact number for my family.

I would like to speak with you and get a little more information about your experience. This is not how we strive to operate. We have daily activity time scheduled for all patients, I would like to look further into why that was not offered. I can be reached at 812-231-5240, thank you.

Where to start, I was transported here for help, I wasn't in the best state of mind and it had been years since I had any type of medication or therapy, I thought when I first arrived here I was under the impression I was going to get that help, the most they did was find a medication that worked for me without turning me into a emotionaless zombie. Some of the staff were okay and some I felt comfortable talking to but between others and the fact there was literally nothing for us in the adult unit to do other than sit there left to our own devices, we would occasionally go outside but it was still the same scenario. The food was unappetizing to say it nicely and after breakfast my first day I was sick to my stomach majority of the time, we couldn't even go to our rooms for quiet or just to take a freaking nap.Honestly worst of all my wife ended up at the same facility, she was there one night before she was released, they lied on her discharge paperwork, broke her receiver for a blood sugar monitor (dexcom) and she had to go to the hospital the day i was discharged, because they let her have a seizure and hit her head multiple times resulting in a concussion (she has a known history) they even tried calling her a liar when it came to this right in front of me (their response time for help was horrible)THIS PLACE IS MORE LIKE A JAIL RAN BY KIDS, I WAS OLDER THAN HALF THE STAFF RESPONSIBLE FOR US THERE AND IM ONLY 26 WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU.

I'm finally going to come out and say something. My stay at Harsha was in the youth section mainly for teens, I was there with a number of people ranging from different personalities. The first thing I noticed was staff, when I first got emitted they took me to my room after intake and I got to sleep for maybe an hour before they came in to draw my blood the nurse doing so did so poorly my arm was very bruised and in pain she poked me too many times for comfort. The second thing I noticed very quickly was also the behavior of the staff, they treat patients so poorly. I saw two events with my own eyes where they took kids and locked them down into a chair in a separate room. They would scream and cry out of fear or big emotions but they left them there until they peed themselves. One of these kids had very bad autism and screamed the whole time that he wanted to go home and they let him scream and scream until again he peed himself. They made me do packets of paperwork because I had a bad day and acted out of pocket from just saying something about a staff member. I did packets of paper for 2-3 days and they were pretty big once I finished one they just gave me a new one. I sat there doing those while the other kids in front of me got to watch a movie or go outside, they would also punish us to the day room if we said something bad or did something bad we had to stay in the day room for lunch, and dinner. We stayed there while the other kids got to go outside in front of us and we could watch through the big glass windows. They also put me in a room with a suicidal and homicidal person. That is completely against protocol and then once I sat on the floor out of fear and cried they marked it down as bad behavior and then moved me to another room with a violent girl who had just fought someone that day. Overall the only good thing I can say about this place was that I was there for only 6 days and that the food was actually pretty good. Thank you for your time, I do not recommend this place to anyone.

I cannot and will not assess how they are with adults. My experience will be limited to my son who I checked in on a Tuesday and was told 3-5 days. An estimated Sunday release turned into a Monday release once they got insurance approval and then turned into a Tuesday release with 0 explanation as to why it was being extended.Attempting to visit Saturday, dad and I brought nothing. After extensive storm damage from having basically a tropical storm in the Midwest it was already a tense drive (2.5hrs). Dad forgot his ID. They would not accept his myBMV account documents (legal in all states), nor would they accept that combined with an actual photo of his ID. Okay, fine. However, they then denied my visitation for my legally prescribed and medically necessary medical device: my inhaler. I actually have multiple inhalers. One to start opening the airways, one steroidal I am to take after, and steroidal neb I keep in my car. They said it must be locked in the locker. No further accommodations would be given and it is hospital policy. Hospital policy does not Trump ADA laws. They are required to offer me some sort of accommodation - even leaving it at the nurses station would have sufficed. But no no visitation. For the record, they do not know MY medical history to know that CPR has to be done carefully and I cannot be tubed at all if my airways close. But I digress. The receptionist even said oh my god!!! when I was asked for clarification on if I was being denied visitation. I asked for them to release my son, and they agreed. However, once they learned I had sought legal and medical advice - which is in my right - I was told by someone in scrubs - and witnessed - Because you are litigious we will not be releasing your son to you and we will no longer be updating you on his treatment. No, that is not how this works. I can all 90 times a day and you are legally required to update me on my minor child. I am his mother and his guardian. When I tell you I called the local sheriffs department, I m not lying. And miraculously they decided to discharge AMA - and YES, I will be fighting insurance not paying. In the discharge documents, they wouldn t let me read through what I was signing. They didn t discharge with any medication prescription he had been taken (something I was told we lost the right of by going AMA) but I was also threatened with DCS.BRING IT!In their care he went unmediated for his severe ADHD. Not one dose - despite me providing 5 days of his hard to get medications - but then there were complaints about his hyperactivity. No, really? Oh, and yes his discharge papers reveal the medical neglect, the fact the police were called, AND the fact that he had met most of his goals. The ONLY good thing that came from his visit is learning a new medication that works for him.For the record, this is my hometown (I don t use my maiden name name.) And A LOT of my family are nurses. They hate this facility, and tried to warn me. Lesson learned. They will never see my son again. If you see red flags don t second guess yourself.

I would like to get more information about your review if you could call me 812-231-5240. For the safety off all of our patients and to protect their HIPPA rights, our policy is that anyone coming for visitation or pick up must have a valid state issued picture id to present in person.

I would never go there again or even referred people there. Some of the staff were horrible to me! There was things there that meet my needs for me being disabled but just being there for a fews days has made me week cause I wasn't allow to take my power chair so I could do things on my own. Like for example if I had my chair there I could go to the restroom cause there a few occasions that I had to pee so bad that they would take there sweet ass time to get me to the restroom. There were two nights where I was sleepy from meds and I had to wait for staff to get done with patient showers before they get me bed and one night my medications started working and I went to pull my pants and I almost fell cause the meds made me sleepy.i was there three days and yesterday night was the first time they changed my bed Linens cause the night I wet on myself. As far as the nurses they would give a pain pill right away I had to wait for them to finish giving medications out to the patients. I was in so much pain that the only thing I ate applesauce cause my jaw was hurting and I didn't start eating that till yesterday. I had first big meal today when I got home. I never want to be in that place again. When I came home last Saturday.I was very weak. Being here I had to count on cna's to wait on me hand and foot. I wasn't allowed my Walker or powerchair. Once I was home I couldn't bare any weight on my legs or arms so starting that night up to Monday morning I made 4 911 calls cause every call was from me falling. I was constantly worried that the fire department would rat on me cause I was in no condition to stay home alone. Starting yesterday morning I got my strength back and now I'm able to transfer on my own again. So I give the thanks to God for always being here
