About Harsha Behavioral Center

Harsha Behavioral Center in Terre Haute, Indiana, is a physician owned psychiatric and addiction center. Their short term inpatient program is open to clients of all ages, and they have a total of 81 beds across their programs. They operate a specialized program for seniors.

Inpatient programs are typically designed to be the most intense level of care available. They often provide long term care for those with severe symptoms. However, the average stay at Harsha Behavioral Center is five to 10 days.

Why the difference? While they provide the same treatment methods as similar facilities, they operate on a shorter timetable. Their goal is to help you achieve stabilization so you can continue on to an outpatient program sooner. That way, you won’t have other areas of your life such as work or school hindered by a lengthy stay. I like this approach because it gets you back to your daily living sooner. But it’s not a fit for everyone, and if your symptoms warrant a lengthy stay you may be referred to another program.

PLEASE READ BEFORE TAKING FAMILY HERE.I can not stress enough that this place is horrible. I am a registered nurse and have working in similar environments I am sad to be part of healthcare when I experience places like this. As a nurse our philosophy has always been "would you treat your family the way you do your patient and if not then you are doing something wrong."..............Well this place must have a messed up family.1. My husband was my contact while I was inpatient for depression, I had marked he could get any and all info, yet he called several times and even went to the ED at the facility who guarantee he would get information when he calls. Even a day later they still wouldn't give him information.2. I was there for the first 3 days without my belongings on day 3 an employee stated "I can't believe they haven't given you a bra instead of letting those big titties flop" At this point I was embarrassed and upset as my husband had brought an approved bra in however I still hadn't been given my personal items. I attempted to use a sheet to wrap around my breasts to help with my embarrassment. I was forced not to wear it as it is against rules understandably. However the nurse stated to me when I refused to take the sheet off " Well since you think you are in charge I will just take all your bedding." At this point all blankets sheets and pillows were taken from me.3. I was not allowed in my room during the day as it was located on part of the child unit which was shut off during the day. Instead I was made to sit in a large room with nothing to do all except color. Imagine being made to sit at a wooden kitchen table all day and color as a 33 year old adult I like coloring just as much as the next person however for 12 hours a day.......... and I am on day 3 with no personal items.4. On day 3 I had a mental breakdown after being told about my "titties" I was very thirsty however they only offered sodas or juices during snacks, I had asked for water. They said they would get some, 15 minutes later I went back and was told that I could have soda or juice as they didn't get water.5. I was placed on in sight at all times which means I was not allowed to be out of eye sight of an employee as a week or 2 earlier I had escaped IU Methodist locked unit. The problem however of being in sight at all times is that I had a neck injury which causes pain sometimes and I was on day 3 of not having my special pillow for my neck despite having a doctors order from the facilities own MD, because again I still hadn't received my personal items. after being up from 6a to 3pm I needed to lay down for a little while. I was refused to be allowed as they didn't have enough staff. I finally snuck away and laid down in the empty day room.....(no staff)... I also had to sneak away to be able to get my shower as staff was always too busy to watch me and I was told no. They also do not allow AM showers as they are supposed to, no big deal you can take one in the evening however they also have refused people their toothbrushes and toothpaste to brush their teeth. I hid mine in my room so I could brush my teeth in the morning.6. I was given a Haldol injection, afterwards I felt very nauseas, dizzy, and my hands were shaking. I had not had this medication before so I was not aware of the reaction it would cause I went to the nurse and begged her to check me out or help me because something was wrong. She did not offer any help as she was too busy. I spent the entire night shaking and even the next morning but didn't report it to anyone else because I had given up.I still have nightmares about this place about sitting at a table for 8 hours with dried up markers and the same coloring pages from the day before the hopelessness I felt. The tears I spilled at night wishing to be home, the tears I spilled for being harassed about my breasts. Please if you love your family do not send them here whether it is geriatric, rehab, or mental health.

Please never send your loved one here. They put you in a day room from 7:30am until 9pm. They make you eat in day room because they don t have enough staff to take you to cafeteria then rest of the day you do nothing but color and play cards at time. When you do groups it the ones in there running the groups, why staff set and talk. The doctor wouldn t give me my medication. She said I didn t need it. I was there on lies from a police officer making a false report and yes the police officer changed her report when I went and confronted her about it. Harsha refused to give me my clothes my family brought and couldn t have my crossword puzzle book, but the church ladies could carry around there bibles. The only clock we could see they would lay it face down on weekends so we couldn t see what time it was. They also put my sister down to have info on me after I told them she wasn t to know anything. They refused to let me talk to my therapist that didn t even know I was in there. I asked to talk with a lawyer and they refused to let me. Then the 18 year old Autistic boy that they done nothing for, besides put him in a Straight jacket and give him a tranquilizer, because he wanted chocolate milk. This place is a insurance scam. They ask you who the first President was and the ones that couldn t get it correct would have to stay more days. I m allergic to all kinds of foods and every meal they would serve me thing s I couldn t eat. Many times I couldn t eat until next meal, but they didn t care. The cops have to be getting a kick back for sending people here on false reports. There was a man that came from Linton and he was there 1 day and had them come back and get him. Knowing if he went back to Linton he would have to stay there longer. He didn t care he said this place is worse than prison. I could go on and on about this place. I m really not sure how they are still in business. Yes people seem happy when family comes, because if you don t act happy they add more days on saying your depressed.

Accepted Insurance

Harsha Behavioral Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Illinois Department of Public Aid

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Clinical Services

Recreational therapy integrates structured activities into a holistic treatment program to help promote your physical and mental health and well being. You might engage in sports, creative arts, or outdoor adventures as a positive outlet for your stress and emotions. This helps you develop new interests and build a supportive network that helps you maintain long term sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

I was sent here unwillingly from union. I am an international student and was struggling with homesickness. The staff was nice but the experience was traumatising making me want to give in on my dreams and go back home. Doctors twisted things I had said and gave me medication I didn't need. when asking or water I was told not until mealtimes and asking for simple necessities like clean underwear and vaseline for my chapped lips I was told no we can't provide those. some of my clothes that were sent there went missing and no one could find them, my phone screen has cracks in it and its sticky. would not wish this experience on my worst enemy. Doctors wouldn't listen when I was trying to speak the truth. I am glad to be out of that hell hole.I would be woken up to people trying to take my blood in the middle of the night and when I first arrived was made to feel severely uncomfortable when being stripped down and having my piercings ripped out of me

I spent 7 days at Harsha. It was a horrible experience. We spent the entire day in one room and had to use the same restroom as the other patients. There was no physical activity and the groups were not helpful. The only thing that they have going for them is some of the employees. Also, an older patient kept trying to get in my room. Nobody apologized or asked how I was doing. They don't allow the doors to be closed. Oh and they lost my contact number for my family.

I would like to speak with you and get a little more information about your experience. This is not how we strive to operate. We have daily activity time scheduled for all patients, I would like to look further into why that was not offered. I can be reached at 812-231-5240, thank you.
