About Harsha Behavioral Center

Harsha Behavioral Center in Terre Haute, Indiana, is a physician owned psychiatric and addiction center. Their short term inpatient program is open to clients of all ages, and they have a total of 81 beds across their programs. They operate a specialized program for seniors.

Inpatient programs are typically designed to be the most intense level of care available. They often provide long term care for those with severe symptoms. However, the average stay at Harsha Behavioral Center is five to 10 days.

Why the difference? While they provide the same treatment methods as similar facilities, they operate on a shorter timetable. Their goal is to help you achieve stabilization so you can continue on to an outpatient program sooner. That way, you won’t have other areas of your life such as work or school hindered by a lengthy stay. I like this approach because it gets you back to your daily living sooner. But it’s not a fit for everyone, and if your symptoms warrant a lengthy stay you may be referred to another program.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

recreational-therapy iconRecreational Therapy

Recreational therapy integrates structured activities into a holistic treatment program to help promote your physical and mental health and well being. You might engage in sports, creative arts, or outdoor adventures as a positive outlet for your stress and emotions. This helps you develop new interests and build a supportive network that helps you maintain long term sobriety.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Absolutely horrible. Besides the kind staff members, everything else was the worst. The abuse of power of the techs in the adult unit was disgusting and downright traumatizing. When you go somewhere if you re needing help because of whatever issues you have, you don t expect the tired and overworked, under trained indifferent staff to treat you like you re an animal or a criminal. We are there because we need help. Not to be told we are attention seeking or blamed for not having insurance because they don t have enough clothes for people whose clothes they lose or otherwise. They literally gave my shirt to a different patient who left and simply told me to call tomorrow . This place has left me scarred for life. I will NEVER be returning to this nightmare torture chamber AGAIN. The rude techs (you know who you are) don t give a damn about anything but their paycheck. Or are so stressed due to high turnover rates that they just don t care how they treat their patients. It breaks my heart to see these poor patients begging to be treated with kindness. If you care for your loved ones at all, DO NOT SEND THEM HERE! I would not wish this place on my worst enemy.

Hi Andrea, thank you for your reply. This is not how we strive to operate. Our staff are trained and expected to provide the highest quality of care and compassion to all patients. If you could please call me at 812-231-5240, I would like to get more information about the staff mentioned who were kind and the staff mentioned who were not.

I spent five days in the adult unit at Harsha. I have never previously been admitted involuntarily or otherwise to a hospital setting but I have been to another mental health treatment program and the differences are drastic. I want to first say that the staff, especially the techs and the therapists are mostly amazing. The staff here simply are not given the tools or freedom to really help people.Groups are supposed to be a time where everyone collectively comes together to learn coping skills and discuss their fears, questions and find guidance. Unfortunately patients are segregated by age and not their individual struggles, learning capabilites or even what they are being cared for. Someone who is 30 and nonverbal autistic with violent tendencies is being taught within the same group as a 20 year old suicidal girl who has never seen paranoid schizophrenia or drug withdrawals in person and inside is terrified of her surroundings instead of being able to focus on her healing. The techs are burnt out on the material because it is literally the same every day of every week and they are just reading words on a page while keeping their eyes and ears open for danger at every second.Due to spacial limitations my room was moved three times, each time the tech was unaware and excitedly told me maybe I was going home when simply I was being shuffled about in an already extremely uncomfortable (albeit on purpose) environment where resting is impossible. It is ok to house individuals with different care programs together to monitor them and keep them safe, but each tech should have a different group to handle and teach them the things for what they are there for. If one tech did coloring and music activities with the autistic adults while another took the group of depressed suicidal adults outside to teach about depression and coping skills and another had the drug withdrawals focusing on rehab topics so much more could be done.I don't take medication mostly. I have a few pills and it doesn't matter when I take them as long as I do. However, pharmaceutical issues seem to be a major issue here. I heard many patients mention not getting required medication at specific times and for some people this is dangerous. Not only can it cause more behavioral issues staff have to deal with but for some it may be life or death. More work needs to be done with primary care doctors and finding out exactly what each person takes and when, and stop with the twice a day medication routine. Having a nurse practitioner come once a day for prescription writing is absurd. Someone should be there 24/7 for needs that arrive whenever. It's a HOSPITAL for Christ's sake. I developed a nasty chest cold and wasn't able to be treated for two days because only one person can decide if I am allowed tylenol or cold medication. Imagine if I was in extreme pain or anxiety, it would be torture at minimum. My last point is that not everyone who is admitted to this hospital is the same. Some of them are like me, relatively 'normal' and work full time and aware of myself and my surroundings. There is not much honesty and upfront information about who makes decisions, how long your stay will be, what rights you have as a patient, and how to make sure your life at home is taken care of while you are gone. And they lost my clothes.Harsha behavioral center is actually Harsha babysitting services. It is a rotating door of people at the worst moment in their lives being kept alive until they can be sent out in the world again with a crick in their neck and a photocopied paper worksheet about wise mind thinking that they didn't even learn what it means because Jimbo was throwing punches and Jeffrey needed to have his Pepsi refilled and Jane was talking to spirits and Joebob was withdrawing from heroin and couldn't stop pacing. Sorry if my review seems.....Harsh...ahh.

Thank you for your review. We are glad to hear the positives about our staff. We understand that it is difficult to be admitted on the same unit where the patients have varying mental health needs- we are an acute stay facility that strives to provide the best care to all individuals that need stabilization and treatment. If you would like to talk more, please call me at 812-231-5240.

personally I hated this place and cried myself to sleep literally every night definitely don t recommend but if you seriously need help then I m not saying this is the place to go but it helps you some what especially a few of the staffs. Hailey, Leeane? , and Austin are great there, I really liked talking to Hailey she helped me through most of the time I was there, but over all I don t recommend going to harsha so if you were like me and felt like hurting yourself.. DONT you will end up here or somewhere worse.

Called for appointment, sent to voicemail. Left call back number. Attempted another call, sent to voicemail. 2 months later, no call back. When people need assistance and being an establishment that helps people, you'd think you'd at least return a phone call if you missed it.I have harsher words, but thanks.

Response from the owner4 months ago
