Harmony Place set me on the path to saving my life. I was there for three months, 5 or 6 years ago. Wow, it s been that long! Mark, Lori and the whole staff provide an environment where true healing and discovery can take place. It is not a good experience at all, it is painful and uncomfortable and terrifying at times. And it s the best thing I ever did for myself. I struggled with a lifetime of mental health issues. At Harmony Place, I was finally able to identify the root causes (trauma) and developed life-saving tools that I use every day in my recovery. Thank you, Lori, Mark, Sam, and all who were there for me.

This is a place of healing and recovery from trauma. Every staff member is dedicated to the well-being of the client. I've done more work here than a lifetime of therapy and treatment. When you are ready to do the hard work and make your life worth living every day, Harmony is the place. Every therapist is the best at what they do. I cannot say enough about what Harmony Place means to me. This is truly the best thing I have ever done for myself.

It is only now that I am learning how powerful the teachings Mark and Lori gave me. Last night I discovered a page of writing Mark suggested I write at the end of my treatment when I was approaching discharge. It was titled "My Personal Philosophy" I hadn't seen it in three years, but everything I wrote came true. I overcame my eating disorder, I let go of beliefs that I was unworthy, I forgave myself for hurting others and others for hurting me. I feel free and also understand that being alive means that there will be winters and summers, love and pain, and that we all are trying our best with the tools we know how to. I also saw quotes from Lori in my notebook about abundance and living without fear or shame. I can thankfully say that these beliefs and values are part of me now. I was impatient with my healing journey, I wanted results fast and I wanted to be given freedom but but now I realize that it took really doing the work, listening to myself, my body, my wisdom and the wisdom of Mark and Lori to get there. I was young and self centered at times, not understanding that by holding onto hurt blame and shame I produced more of that in the world. The greatest gift that anyone can give another human is love and compassion especially at our lowest. I am forever grateful and I am transformed. It just takes faith time and patience.Thank you all.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. Their outpatient program is 3 hours one day a week.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient programs are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs. Their IOP is 3 hours a day, five days a week.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober living houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment. Harmony Place offer a transitional living as part of their aftercare planning. Their environment allow the patient to focus on continue in recovery. Transportation is provided to the outpatient program.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don't require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for ~ 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals. Their PHP is six hours a day.
12-step icon12-Step
Participants engaged in 12 step programs receive intensive peer coaching (sponsorship) and community support. Spiritual development as a means of achieving psychological and emotional healing and growth is the cornerstone of 12 step recovery, but religious affiliations are not required. Meetings are free, anonymous, and open to the public, though specialized formats are available, including groups for seniors, teens, and family members. Evening, night, and day meetings are conducted year-round in most communities.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

The goal of couples therapy in California is to strengthen the couple's relationship. The therapist may take one or more approaches to counseling which may include the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic couple's therapy.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

A Review for Harmony Place: A Life-Changing ExperienceBy a grateful client from GeorgiaI am writing this review to share my experience at Harmony Place, a treatment center for trauma, eating disorder, substance misuse, anxiety and depression, located in Monterey, California. I hope that my story can inspire and encourage others who are struggling with similar issues and are looking for a place to heal and grow.I found Harmony Place through YouTube, of all places. I was browsing for videos about trauma and attachment theory, and I came across some of their clips. I was immediately drawn to their approach, which goes deeper into the effects of trauma and how it impacts our relationships, emotions, and behaviors. I watched a few of their videos and I felt a connection with their message and their staff. I decided to contact them and see if they could help me.I was suffering from a combination of issues, including PTSD, eating disorder, substance misuse, anxiety and depression. I had tried other forms of therapy and treatment, but nothing seemed to work for me. I felt hopeless, lonely, and broken. I needed a place that could understand me and all my comorbid issues, and that could offer me a comprehensive treatment plan.Harmony Place was that place for me. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed, supported, and cared for. The staff were not just staff, they were amazing people who treated me with respect, compassion, and kindness. They were also very knowledgeable and experienced in their fields. They helped me with every aspect of my recovery, from the medical to the psychological to the spiritual. My individual therapist was a godsend. She held my emotions for me until I could finally start to feel them - really feel them - for myself. She helped me process my trauma, understand my patterns, and challenge my negative beliefs. She also helped me cope with a new diagnosis of bipolar disorder, which took me several weeks to accept and adjust to. She was patient, gentle, and insightful. She guided me through the ups and downs of my journey and helped me find my inner strength and resilience. The groups were also powerful and helpful. I learned a lot from the different topics and modalities, such as DBT, CBT, EMDR, art therapy, yoga, mindfulness, and more. I also learned a lot from the other clients, who shared their stories, struggles, and successes with me. I made friends with some of them, even though I didn't think that was on my list of things to do in my healing journey. I realized that I was not alone in my experience, and that I could open up and trust others without fear of judgment or stigma. The doctor was outstanding. He was very attentive and responsive to my needs and concerns. He prescribed me the right medication and monitored my progress closely. He also explained to me the nature and treatment of bipolar disorder, and how I could manage it effectively. He was very supportive and encouraging, and he made me feel hopeful and optimistic about my future.Going to Harmony Place was literally the best decision I ever made. I can honestly say that it was a life-changing experience for me. I left feeling like a new person, with a new perspective, a new purpose, and a new plan. I am now back home with my kids, feeling like my old self again, but better. I still have work to do, but I have the tools and the support to do it. I am so grateful and thankful for Harmony Place and everyone who works there. They gave me a gift that I can never repay. They gave me my life back.If you are reading this and you are looking for a place to heal from trauma, eating disorder, substance misuse, anxiety and depression, or any combination of these issues, I urge you to consider Harmony Place. It is a special place, a safe place, a place where you can do a tremendous amount of healing. You will not regret it. I would recommend Harmony Place a million times over, and I would give it ten stars if I could. This place is that special.

I ve been wanting to write the perfect review in an attempt to reflect the miracles Harmony Place has truly enlightened within my life, but words cannot do justice. To the point: their guidance and lessons provide fundamental knowledge with regard to the reason you are suffering, and knowing is half the battle. I was very heavily suicidal and deeply hopeless upon starting, yet with their brilliant and full-of-heart therapists and support staff and lessons - all within a safe space, Harmony Place has saved my life.I ve been through over two years of programs that did not work (three psych wards totaling 5 weeks, over a month-long residential unit, a different PHP and IOP program, many [many] different therapists) - and I have always tried to be open-minded to their teachings, but again - rendering no truly helpful result. Most lacked propriety and heart with their patients despite their best efforts. If anything, I would make a strong argument that all of that made me and my symptoms worse, leaving me feeling even more hopeless by seeking help in the wrong places. A continuation of falling down the dark chamber of hopelessness is a deadly place in which to be falling, and I was falling with greater and greater velocity simply waiting to hit the ground. Then I was sent to Harmony Place. I took part in their PHP initially, and finally ending after their IOP. Their facility has a deep vibrancy of safety, warmth, support, and the perfect balance of loving professionalism. All of the personnel working within the facility emit these qualities brightly, most ardently - like angels without wings. The therapist to whom I was assigned and with whom I shared my utmost of vulnerability always responded with deep respect and great wisdom, being a master of his craft - upholding unparalleled exuberance and great care. Harmony Place, amongst their other modalities, uses a teaching modality which unfortunately is not more popular - Internal Family Systems. My therapist - along with his very many safe varieties of therapy, worked wonders on an area of my life I truly believed to be the death of me, especially after trying so hard for so long. His outstretched hand finally penetrated the stubborn and steadfast dome of suicidal hopelessness, helping me to plant a great seed of hope and healing, and a thorough understanding of the why.I cannot overstate how great it feels to have hope again. Many people there had traveled great distances and put their life back at home on pause to invest in themselves at Harmony Place. Regardless of where you are, if you are struggling, I implore you with great conviction to reach out to them - for again, they performed nothing short of a miracle and I will, for the rest of my days, be sincerely grateful to Harmony Place for having helped me out of the very most unfathomable of mental health agony - and for saving my life.

This place changed my life! I was there for three months and can only say positive things about it. It was the best decision I could have made. They have a holistic approach; they think of all aspects to overcome traumas and addictions. I have been to several intensive care centers and other places for mental health help, and I have only found that they work on the symptoms. In Harmony, they go to the bottom to find the reasons and childhood situations that triggered mental illnesses and maladaptive coping mechanisms. From the therapists, the psychiatrist, the staff members, and the group therapy sessions, everything is methodically designed to provide comprehensive treatment. I was going through the most challenging time of my life: terrible PTSD symptoms, major depression, and compulsive and destructive behaviors. Thanks to my treatment at Harmony, I could process complicated parts of my childhood traumas, significantly improving my symptoms. I have new tools to handle crises and my depression. I received the best psychiatric care and had the best therapists anyone could wish for. I left in tears because I will miss them, and I am deeply grateful for their help.

My experience at Harmony Place is hard to put into words because it changed the course of my life. I realized I had been living in a shell of myself, and with the help of the treatment team which includes very knowledgeable therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, front staff, and many others I felt as if I was taken care of at every juncture of my journey. It was very hard work, and as my diagnosis, trauma and grief emerged, the team made sure to support each and every step of the way. I became ready to help myself in my depression, anxiety, suicidality, PTSD, and many more things, and without them and their expertise I wouldn't know how to face each day. Thank you Harmony Place and team for your wonderful care.
