About Geisinger Marworth

Geisinger Marworth, an entity of Geisinger Health System, is an alcohol and substance use treatment facility located in the rolling hills of Waverly in Northeastern, Pennsylvania. They provide inpatient and outpatient (OP) programs for adult men and women.

Their inpatient programs are highly specialized and take into consideration each person’s unique addiction needs, when developing treatment plans. These include medical detox, individual and group therapy, educational therapy and family programs. Medical and addiction professionals utilize a broad range of treatment modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), expressive and recreational therapy, medication assisted treatment (MAT), and holistic treatments such as acupuncture to support clients in the earliest stages of recovery.

At Geisinger Marworth they understand that men and women within the healthcare and uniformed professions have unique alcohol and substance abuse disorder treatment needs. Recognizing this need, they created two specialized programs for these individuals. In addition to individual and group therapy, they offer programs that focus on work related stress that may play a part in unhealthy coping mechanisms and re-entry planning for the transition back to work and home.

Their outpatient programs include intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and general outpatient therapy. For those who need a high level of care, but are not able to participate in inpatient programs due to work or family responsibilities, IOP offers flexibility in scheduling. Geisinger Marworth offers IOP sessions in the daytime and evening where individuals attend four times per week for approximately four weeks. Individuals who have completed inpatient or IOP can continue attending outpatient counseling where they receive ongoing relapse prevention support.

They take many commercial insurance plans, are licensed by the state of Pennsylvania, and accredited by The Joint Commission. Newsweek named them the #1 treatment center in Pennsylvania for 2024.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. Marworth offers substance abuse treatment on an outpatient basis. Outpatient addiction treatment is often recommended after completing an inpatient residential program to help maintain sobriety. Outpatient addiction treatment can also be beneficial for those seeking help with an addiction for the first time but do not need the 24/7 support and medical monitoring of an inpatient program at this point.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements. Marworth offers substance abuse treatment on an inpatient, or residential, basis. Inpatient addiction treatment is designed for individuals experiencing symptoms related to acute or chronic drug and alcohol symptoms.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare

Clients receiving services from a rehab aftercare program are usually stable and in the maintenance phase of recovery, having completed detox and/or intensive inpatient treatment. Rehab aftercare services can vary widely based on clients' individual and evolving needs, but often include peer coaching, relapse prevention support, 12 step program induction, and medical, mental health, and social service referrals. Individual care plans are typically developed by the client in partnership with their case manager and care team.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention services bring extensive experience to the planning and conducting of drug interventions in Pennsylvania. These experts can facilitate interventions in a sensitive manner that encourages positive outcomes. The goal of the intervention is to educate the individual about addiction and the consequences of their substance use and encourage them to get the treatment they need. Interventions can be effective with all types of drugs and alcohol addiction.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in Pennsylvania is devoted to the treatment of addiction. Levels of care, treatment methods, and settings differ, but the aim of each program is to end drug dependency and empower participants to achieve long-term recovery.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

art-brush iconCreative Arts Therapy

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation. Educating and caring for the family is an essential part of addiction treatment and recovery. At Marworth, family therapy conducted by an experienced family therapist is part of each person's substance abuse rehabilitation program. Even after addiction treatment at Marworth is completed, family programs are available.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

nicotine iconNicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health. In addition to the traditional 12-Step program, Geisinger Marworth offers a nutrition-focused educational program to help addicted individuals with an eating disorder start on a road to recovery.

recreational-therapy iconRecreational Therapy

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Geisinger Marworth truly saved my life. If it wasn t for this facility, I don t know where I d be. I was resisting treatment at first and instead of just letting me out the door, my counselor Jenna showed me how much I needed the help. The staff was compassionate. They listened to me cry and lead me in the right direction. I can t say enough how great this place is. If you re thinking about going in for treatment, Geisinger Marworth is for you!!

Rehab mill. Staff turnover is alarming. Medicle team absolutely deplorable. Full of hood rats jailbirds and lifers. Drama around every corner. But if you are of a Caucasianconsiderable profession you may be segregated to "The cottage " and your exposure to the Chaos will be limited. But the rest good luck. If this is the best in P.A. we are DOOMED!!! Terrible experience.I know no rehab is perfect, unfortunately I do have one to compare it to, West Coast Recovery. It may not have had the "prestige" as Marwath but offered a much better environment to start your recovery.

overall a decent quality rehab. the good: the food is pretty good, grounds and building are beautiful, and some of the counselors are very understanding. the yoga, music and outdoor programs are EXCELLENT. the bad: they dont turn on the ac until well into summer and it can get around 81 degrees in the rooms when you re try to get some rare and therapeutic sleep. some of the counseling sessions are awkward, cold and completely lacking in human empathy. some, not all. i was prescribed gabapentin at marworth after i told the doctors i had been on lyrica for almost a year. after taking gabapentin, the combination of the two medications made me severely ill for about two months. i reported this but never got a response.

I sincerely wish everyone who was lucky enough to have the privilege of attending this top notch facility would realize how special it truly is. When i read negative feedback i wonder if these folks have ever been to an underfunded n short staffed county "rehab ". This place is actually clean and sanitary. Staff even cleans the bedrooms daily. The rec therapy is without parallel. So i was blessed to have been able to get started with sobriety in that amazing place. Those who complain and nitpick... im sorry to say... would get over it if they were ready to live a better life. Theyre just making excuses n i understand its very hard to make a new start but there is no better place to begin!Thankyou Marworth n god bless
