About Frontier Health – Holston Counseling Center

Frontier Health - Holston Counseling Center is a provider of behavioral health services in Kingsport, Tennessee. At this center, staff members can provide treatment for mental health, substance use and co-occurring disorders. Their services are available to adults, adolescents and children. In addition to these treatment services, a case manager is available to help clients access home based and community based resources that can support a client’s treatment goals. Other departments that are at this facility are the Bridging the Gap/Older Adults Project and the Mother Child Connection. Clients also have access to court services and crisis services.

Holston Counseling Center treats patients through outpatient services. Clients will typically have to meet at the center multiple times a week to participate in individual therapy sessions and group counseling. In group counseling, patients may learn about related topics such as relapse prevention and gain insight and support from their peers. In individual therapy, counselors will help clients through therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational therapy. These approaches can help patients better understand the cause of their addiction, increase their motivation to change and develop coping skills to avoid using substances.

One of the things I like most about Holston Counseling Center is its specialized departments for older adults and for mothers and children. The Bridging the Gap/Older Adults Project focuses on the mental health needs of older adults, providing education on substance use and mental health issues. Older adults will receive psychiatric consultation and case management services. The Mother Child Connection program provides recovery oriented services tailored to women 18 years or older who are pregnant and have dependent children. The program provides relapse education, therapy and follow up services.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients receiving support in a rehab aftercare program typically have abstained from drugs or alcohol for a period of weeks or months and have completed high-level (often inpatient) treatment. Drug rehab aftercare is designed to support clients in maintaining their sobriety as they re-engage with their ordinary lives at home, in the workplace, and in the community. Services are highly individualized and evolve with clients' changing needs, but generally include peer coaching and relapse prevention.
12-step icon12-Step
When enrolld in an addiction recovery program that's based on the 12 step model, clients are able to cultivate recovery-focused life skills emphasizing spiritual, mental, and emotional healing. Participants receive intensive peer support in 12 step meetings, which are anonymous, free, open to the public, and available day and night in most communities. Self-selected sponsors guide sponsees through the recovery journey, cultivating self-awareness, forgiveness, acceptance, and accountability. Though these programs are rooted in spiritual principles, participants aren't required to be religiously affiliated.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
A sober living home in Tennessee, also known as a halfway house, refers to a group residence for men or women who are recovering from addiction. These are usually privately owned homes or houses owned by a nonprofit or business. Most are located in quiet residential areas. Residents have their own rooms or share a room with one roommate, and they share common areas. Each resident pays rent and helps with household maintenance.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
The goal of a drug intervention in Tennessee is to encourage a person with a substance use disorder to enter treatment. The process also educates family members about addiction, enabling behaviors, and treatment options. The involvement of intervention services can help with this education and provide guidance for the intervention itself and follow-up care. The professional interventionist will work with the entire family to encourage the best outcomes possible from the intervention.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
To keep you safe and comfortable during the detoxification process, a medically assisted detox provides you with a team of medical professionals who can provide the necessary medications to treat any potential withdrawal symptoms. Suddenly stopping chronic abuse of substances like alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids can have uncomfortable and even dangerous side effects.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When your day-to-day life is taken over by drug use, this is known as substance use disorder. If you abruptly stop using your drug of choice, you experience withdrawal symptoms. To overcome this cycle, professional drug rehab in Tennessee is usually needed.

Every individual who enters treatment receives an evaluation for both substance abuse and a co-occurring mental illness. Individuals who have both conditions, receive specialized goals that deal with and focus on putting both diagnosis into a recovery mode during treatment.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
postpartum-program thumbnail image
Postpartum Program
The postpartum period is a sensitive time, especially for women in addiction recovery. Rehabs with specialized programs for new mothers will offer compassionate, personalized care to meet each client's needs as they transition from pregnancy to this season of life. Care teams may include obstetricians, pediatricians, and social workers working collaboratively to give women, children, and families a healthy future.

Clinical Services

Typical cognitive behavioral therapy in Tennessee involves recognizing negative thinking and learning techniques to change that thinking and create new, positive behaviors. Strategies may include SMART goals, journaling, and situation exposure.

Counseling in Tennessee that takes a dialectical behavior therapy approach can last from six to 12 months. During that time, you'll develop skills in the areas of distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

If you participate in motivational interviewing in Tennessee, your therapist will focus on four key strategies: open questions, affirmation, reflections, and summarizing. Rather than confront or warn you to change, the clinician will allow you to explore your own motivations and decide what changes you may need to make in your life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Recreational therapy supports addiction recovery by giving you structured activities that promote physical and mental health. These help build a supportive network of your peers that promotes sobriety. Activities can include sports, creative arts, and outdoor adventures that help you reduce cravings, manage stress, and give you an emotional outlet.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

To quit smoking, you can use nicotine replacement therapy and gradually reduce the amount of nicotine you consume. This allows your brain and body to adjust so you can reach your goal of breaking free from cigarettes in just a few weeks.

If I were able to give negative Stars I would have. This is where you go as the very last resort and then you'll still struggle. They see you for less than 5mins and write the exact medications to almost everyone in varying dosages and combinations. Every prescription I have received there has had adverse reactions, or my insurance refuses to cover them(out-of-pocket would have been well over $1,000 for just one),and no matter what you tell them they may listen, but still recycle their "Go-To" mess on you. I need help, serious help and unfortunately I am unable to receive the proper care any individual deserves from this facility. I strongly encourage anyone to look elsewhere from Houston Counseling/Frontier Heath all together. I'm broken and am being forced to suffer due to the lack of care I have received at thisplace. .

I have been going to frontier health for 20 years and just now found a doctor who actually listens and helps and asks you what course you want to tale. She even breaks down and describes what the meds are and helps if the MG is wrong.

I have had diagnosed ADHD for years. I was placed on concerta. After a few weeks I told the physician I did not feel like this medication was working for me. After that I was placed on modafinel, a stimulant that is used to treat narcolepsy. I have insomnia and this is clearly not a good choice for me. I called my doctor and asked why I was not being treated with first line treatments. I was placed on Vyvanse, which unfortunately I do not have insurance and costs $300+ dollars out of pocket. I call back and say I cannot afford this medication. They ask why I can't just use a GoodRx coupon. That was with a GoodRx coupon, I say. They then proceed to accuse me of medication seeking for Adderall. This continues until I am in tears and telling the nurse I would like a medication meant for my condition. I am transferred to another nurse who tells me that Frontier Health does not prescribe stimulants. I tell the nurse I have been prescribed two stimulants up until this point. The nurse repeats "we do not prescribe stimulants" and then hangs up. I have never been to a healthcare provider that lied to me about their own medical practices. I have no other way to affordably get on my medications now and I am struggling in work, in all areas of my life. I have had nothing but poor experiences with this organization and I hate they have a mental health monopoly in the area.

So far I am very pleased with my experience. Person I spoke to to get my info was amazing and as helpful as could be. She was able to meet my one request and answer all questions. I've had multiple meetings now and couldn't be happier with my councilor/psychologist. Had always been very apprehensive about going to see someone. Literally one of the best decisions I made. If you were hesitant like me just give it a shot. It definitely can't hurt. And they're willing to work with people with low income and/or no insurance. My visits are being covered by a special grant. So anyone saying they're going after all the money they can get is completely wrong. Overall a great staff and experience.

I would give them negative stars if I could. Please please please DO NOT GO HERE if you really need help. I have had several family members try to go here for counseling and it was the most horrible experience they have ever had. They overbook, they cancel appointments, and it seems like they are just out to get the most money they can. The first appointment is just filling out paperwork, you don't actually get to speak to a therapist, and they charge $200/per appointment. One family member thought they were talking to a therapist at their first appointment, and the intake person let them talk about personal issues for half an hour before telling them that they were not a therapist, and that they would get to see a therapist on their next appointment. They are doing more harm than good and in my opinion they should be shut down.
