About Equinox Counseling and Wellness Center

The Equinox Counseling and Wellness Center offers intensive outpatient counseling services for children and adolescents in Denver, Colorado. They specialize in treating an array of behavioral health conditions, including substance use disorder.

One unique part about this facility is that it combines holistic healing with evidence based care. Here, clients participate in individual and group counseling sessions, life skills training, and vocational development. The goal is to give them the tools they need to overcome their challenges and create a foundation for long term recovery.

To complement these treatments, they also offer therapy that incorporates recreation, adventure, and expressive arts. While in the program, you’ll participate in activities like rock climbing, backpacking, and mountain biking to grow your self confidence. There’s also art and music therapy to support personal reflection, and somatic therapies like yoga and meditation to cultivate your body awareness and reduce stress.

They offer age specific programs, as well as a comprehensive transition and aftercare phase. When you’re ready to become more independent, they’ll help you find supportive housing, search for a job, and connect to resources within your community.

The parent of a current client says they can’t think of another place that’s more likely to help their child succeed. They appreciate that this facility treats the whole family through counseling, activities, and even sibling coaching.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Professional services are often necessary to recover from addiction. Drug rehab in Colorado provides the expert services needed to address the complex issues of addiction and help individuals start their recovery journey.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

art-brush iconCreative Arts Therapy

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Fitness Therapy

Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues. By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I am a local clinician and am sad to say that I can no longer recommend this agency or refer to them. They have harmed clients by abandoning them and have charged clients exorbitant fees unethically. They have very high turn over because they treat their staff in the same unfortunate manner, which is widely documented on Glassdoor and Indeed.Update with Reply:Equinox responding to reviews is ethically questionable considering HIPPA guidelines. The defensiveness and inaccuracy of their reply does demonstrate my concern and reason for posting a review. However, I appreciate that they used the term egregious. Unfortunately my experience and knowledge of Equinox is that their actions have been egregious. I also appreciate that they defined "abandonment", as they have dismissed clients for non-emergent reasons and did not collaborate with and support the family with proper referrals. (Since it was mentioned, professionally speaking, educational consultants are not an appropriate referral or a higher level of care. That was one of my concerns and the public may not be aware that such is not within standard practices of care in the mental health field.)To explain the financial concern, transparency in the contract was not the issue. Equinox charged a client approximately $10K for monthly tuition at the beginning of the month. An extremely high fee as is, but what was agreed upon in the contract. The issue was that Equinox then dismissed the client the next day after charging their card, and did not refund the client any of the tuition and kept the funds. The staff reviews on Glassdoor and Indeed speak for themselves and are of note because they align with what I noticed and with the treatment of clients that I am aware of. The reviews started many years ago and have been consistent. They are not reflective of the current trends in the market, rather of Equinox and the leadership.I felt it was my obligation to make these behaviors publicly known in an effort to advocate for ethical services in our field and a desire to protect the community. I do hope that Equinox takes feedback seriously as it stated.**Equinox removed/edited their original response after I posted my updated reply to them.

Our son has a complex mental health profile and has received treatment from a variety of sources over the years. Equinox has been the right fit for our son and our family at this time in his life. We have been very impressed by the clinical sophistication and the ability to meet him where he is, which is in many ways fluid. The staff members are incredibly empathetic, knowledgeable, and devoted to building positive, sustainable change. We are very fortunate and grateful to have found Equinox.

One of my children has been enrolled here for 4 months. The staff and owners here are amazing, supportive and patient. I can't imagine a place that is more likely to help my child succeed. They truly treat the whole family through parent coaching, whole family and multi-family activities, and even coaching other siblings in how they can build their relationship and support the sibling that is enrolled. Some reviews mention a high staff turnover. In the 4 months we've been here, I've noticed one person leave. It hasn't been a problem though. Our child regularly works with several people here and they get to know each other really well.

I cannot express enough how grateful I am for Equinox. The staff is not only caring but goes above and beyond to create a supportive environment for our child who is in the young adult program. The positive direction in which my child is heading is noticeable, after only a few months. It's clear that the EQ team is dedicated to fostering growth and well-being.It is a family-focused approach. The support doesn't end with the individual; it extends to the entire family. This holistic perspective has strengthened our family bonds and contributed to the positive direction in which my child is heading. When looking for a counseling and wellness organization, every child and family has different needs. Finding the right match can be challenging and is a crucial part of the success for the families. For our family, I believe we have found the right match in Equinox.Thank you to the entire team for the incredible work you do!

Offering up our experiences and lessons learned for families that might be considering the young adult program at Equinox (18-24 yr. olds). What you will be sold is that the Equinox team has created a unique/successful method to help transition your adolescent into young adulthood where other types of therapy programs may have failed. In this environment your son or daughter will find purpose and motivation . They further that vision by suggesting you will see a customized plan where participants will experience a plethora of various treatment styles that teach community, creation of healthy friendships, fitness, school recovery, job skills, and restoration of family relationships. As parents, we bought into the idealism, drank the cool aid, and signed up.First the Good: The staff are for the most part are genuine, kind, and patient. They buy into the treatment processes they are delivering, even in the face of adversity/resistance from the participant. The focus is behavioral, and compliance based, it is slow, steady, and methodical. Family participation is required, and they deliver solid support in that process. Communication is for the most part fairly consistent. Now the not so Good: The process follows what appears to be a formula that is delivered in a one size fits all way. Common practice for addressing behavioral compliance is to talk down to these young adult s vs establishing relationship (imagine an 18-year-old being scolded publicly over and over like a young child, week after week). As frustration builds and treatment resistance increases, instead of finding ways to shift tactics, the program doubles down on its scripted playbook. Little things suddenly become combative infractions and enforcement turns into humiliation and being sent home over and over again. After completing the first 6-week phase of the program, we sat down with staff to review our son s progress. Everyone involved agreed things were not working. We made a conscious decision to pull our son from the program as a result and instead of working with us to refund an entire month of prepaid tuition, the management team leaned on their contractual legalese to keep every penny ( we have a 30-day notice clause, you signed it ). Clearly revenue/profit is a major motivation, services never delivered are irrelevant. In summary, if you have a kid with a noncomplex mental diagnosis that needs more childlike structure to learn how to step into adult learning, I could see how this program might help. If, however you kid has multiple/complex dual diagnosis (mental health and substance abuse for example), proceed with caution.

I believe EQ saved our family. The staff is amazing, knowledgeable, caring, empathetic and empowering. It is a hard space to be in when your child needs this level of care and EQ was the best space for not only our daughter to heal, and become a successful young adult, but a place for our family to heal. We endured 14 months at an RTC before finding our unicorn with EQ.

This company is all high pressure sales people preying on vulnerable parents, do not put your child in this program.. they will tell you over and over they need help as long as you keep paying them the exorbitant fees!!! All fluff, this group is a complete scam!!!

Former employee. These are sloppy, manipulative, devious people. I've seen them destabilize a client due to being reckless and careless with their medications. I've seen parents relentlessly isolated and manipulated when they want to leave. They treat their employees terribly. If you work here, don't give notice, even though they ask you to in their employee manual. The chances you will let go the day you resign are very high, and they won't pay you.

This program is FAMILY centered, which is invaluable and coaches all of us into new ways of communication and leadership. The staff were compassionate, well educated in helping us through our struggles, and kept us on course! My advice for those considering an intervention focused on the family and teaching everyone how to communicate better is to JUST DO IT! :) The time and money was well worth it and I would do it over and over again!

We have been with EQ about 3 months and I wanted to write the review I wish had existed when we were trying to make this huge decision.First, to address some of the negative review- EQ was very upfront with us about the costs of the program and what is typically covered/not covered by insurance (hint: it's not a lot, you will pay good money out of pocket to be part of EQ). They are a business trying to deliver the highest and best care to their clients while maintaining a healthy and safe workplace for staff. This is evident once you are in the program.Anyone who is considering EQ is pretty desperate to find something to help their family, it is a vulnerable position. EQ is a fit for families that want to stay together, heal together, and ultimately win together. It really is an all-hands-on-deck experience. The first month is overwhelming just because it is a new thing and is involved and that's just the nature of starting something new and intensive. It is a lot to get used to and it is very emotional. But that was our life, that was why we ended up even considering EQ, wasn't it?3 months in we are used to the schedule and we are digging in to the hard work. The staff is incredibly competent and supportive. I can not describe what it has meant to have every single person who is part of EQ be on our team and be available to assist us.In a word, you get what you pay for with EQ. It is above-par, wrap-around, comprehensive care. Obviously we are still in the program so I can't tell you our outcome yet or that we have met our goals, but the experience has been as positive as one can hope for given the circumstances and we are hopeful that our family will have success. If you are reading this review I wish the best for you. It is an awful thing to have to be considering these options, it is not where you thought you would be as a parent but here you are. Maybe EQ will be right for you? If you think it is after asking all your questions (they don't mind, interview them until you are blue in the face), I don't think you will be disappointed.

Equinox saved our family. Our son was struggling and the whole family was struggling as a result. My son received the individualized attention and help he needed to learn how to feel good about himself along with the strategies, techniques and therapy he needed to become successful in life. The rest of the family received the same: individual counseling for the siblings, family counseling, parent coaching and the hope that we could be a family again. EQ offered the most integrated team therapy approach we have ever experienced in 16 yrs of searching for help; counseling, experiential, service work & peer support. The staff was professional, supportive and constantly available. While expensive, it was worth every penny and they worked with us to provide Superbills that we could submit to insurance. Over the 3 years we spent with EQ, we gradually reduced the total number of hours of service until we finally met our goals. Now, we are taking family vacations, our son just graduated high school and we are a family.
