About Embark Behavioral Health – Independence

Embark Behavioral Health in Independence, Missouri, is an inpatient rehabilitation treatment center for boys, girls, and LGBTQ+ youths ages 12 through 18. The secluded campus offers therapy, academics, and life skills education in an environment structured to be “home-like.” Most clients stay for an average of 90 days.

The center is accredited by The Joint Commission and Cognia. They treat ADHD, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, and depression.

Behavioral issues treated include oppositional defiant disorder, out of control behavior, reactive attachment disorder, substance use, substance use co-occurring with mental health issues, and suicidal ideation. Your child’s therapist will be able to treat your child by gaining the child’s trust and cultivating empathy.

Residential Substance Use Treatment

Residential treatment is chosen for youth exhibiting serious emotional or behavioral issues. Youth who need intensive mental health services and cannot live safely at home should be admitted to a residential program.

Being in a residential treatment program will remove your teen from triggering stresses so that they can heal. Your child will be supervised 24/7 to ensure safety. It’s neat that the center resembles a log cabin so it’s not so clinical, with a stone fireplace and plenty of outdoor space.

Family Involvement During Treatment

We would never want to send our child into an environment where we have no contact with our kids and can’t visually see conditions and the wellbeing of our children. The center brings in family two to three hours per week for therapy and will call you with frequent updates and ask you to complete a survey about your opinion of the program.

Culturally sensitive services are offered for treatment. Your child will never be restrained, secluded, or confined. Removal of food, shelter, hygiene, or bedding is never used as disciplinary measures. Staff commit to never frighten, humiliate, or cause physical discomfort or pain.

Do not send your children here!!! They overbill insurance and you. While there I received hours of stick and poke tattoos on my hands(not once interrupted by staff), ran away and spent a night in woods, ran away again but never left campus(took hours to find me and then accused of assault by a staff member(later dismissed) but I was sent to JDC and then had to start over at a whole new facility where I successfully completed that program in 30 days. THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT THE MONEY.

Our 16-year-old son stayed at Embark Behavioral Health for one month last year. Looking back, we have mixed emotions. One disturbing incident was the vandalism of his room - someone urinated on his towel. He felt unsafe due to a flimsy door hanger that offered no privacy or security. Another major concern was the medical care. He was diagnosed with ADHD based on a two-page questionnaire and quickly prescribed medication, which caused visible tremors. Later, staff suggested he might have autism. This uncertainty prompted us to seek a full psychological evaluation at home, which ruled out both ADHD and ASD. Our son’s core issue was his video game addiction. Although he abstained during his stay, he quickly relapsed upon returning home. We were advised to sign a behavioral contract, but it proved ineffective. It wasn’t until we started working with a psychologist, who conducted a full assessment and helped us create clear rules and consequences, that we began to see change. The cost of that one-month stay was over $100,000, most of it paid by insurance. For that price, we expected high standards, especially in medical and therapeutic care. His therapist at Embark was kind and built rapport, but his approach was too liberal given our son’s needs. We followed all recommendations, yet saw no sustained progress once he came home. If we could do it over, we’d be more cautious, question the medical advice given, and avoid relying solely on Embark’s guidance. We share our story so others can make more informed decisions when seeking help for their children.

As a fellow mental health therapist, I recently had the distinct privilege of touring this Embark Behavioral Health campus, and I was genuinely impressed by what I saw and learned. My visit included an in-depth look at the residential hall, the impressive indoor gym, and the welcoming dining area, giving me a comprehensive understanding of their program and facilities. From the moment I stepped onto the campus, it was clear that Embark places a high priority on creating a well-maintained and therapeutic environment. The grounds were immaculate, and the buildings themselves gave a sense of calm and care, which is so crucial for individuals in residential treatment. The residential hall felt genuinely comfortable and safe, with spaces designed to promote both individual reflection and community building. The indoor gym was particularly noteworthy. It's clear they understand the vital role physical activity plays in mental well-being, and having such a well-equipped, accessible space indoors is a significant asset, especially during inclement weather. The dining area was also inviting, suggesting that mealtimes are viewed not just as sustenance, but as opportunities for connection and routine. Beyond the physical space, what truly stood out was the professionalism and knowledge of the staff I encountered. Everyone I met was incredibly nice, welcoming, and clearly dedicated to their roles. Their insights into the program were thorough and demonstrated a deep understanding of the complex needs of the adolescents they serve. It was evident that Embark is committed to evidence-based practices and a holistic approach to mental health treatment. Learning more about their specific program components, their focus on individualized care, and their commitment to family involvement further solidified my positive impression. As a mental health therapist, I recognize the immense importance of these elements in achieving lasting positive outcomes for young people. If I were ever in a position where I needed to send a child to a residential facility for mental health treatment, I would feel incredibly comfortable and confident considering Embark in Independence as a top option. Their well-maintained campus, dedicated and knowledgeable staff, and comprehensive program truly set a high standard for residential care.

Coming from a former client that spent 2 months there and is now 3 months out, Embark truly was amazing. Sure, there were some ups and downs, but that comes with anywhere you go. Most of the staff there were incredibly nice and supportive, and I built bonds with them. I also throughly enjoyed therapy there, since my therapist (Casey) was easy to connect with and seen straight through my “tough” shell that only 1 other therapist (out of many) was able to see through. He worked with me incredibly, guiding me through my intense emotions and helping me learn new skills that I hadn’t learned before. The programming there was amazing, allowing for flexibility depending on each client. The only issue I had while at Embark was the drama, but that also comes with my decisions that I made, so I don’t hold it against them. As long as you focus on yourself, everything is pretty good there. I would honestly send my own kid, in the future, here. I really enjoyed the process in which everyone worked with you, and it improved my mental health alot. Truest thank you’s to Embark!!

Our son was here for about 75 days. The facilities are beautiful and very well maintained. The primary therapist and directors are very caring and worked exceptional hard with our son. Our son was not successful in this program but it was no fault of Embark. I think he learned many new skills to cope with life and was exposed to a very healthy group of meaningful individuals. He created some strong bonds with many of the staff. I was disappointed wirh some of the night staff and the difficulty with messages being relayed to our son or calls being returned but that had nothing to do with our sons treatment just made the process more frustrating. I also wish the equine therapy was more than 3 days but it did happen and my son enjoyed it. I would recommend this facility for children in emotional distress after all other counseling , therapies, and other treatments have failed. I wish my son could return for another month or two, as I think he is ready to do things differently- it takes what it takes for all children, but am grateful for Kayla, Kenneth, Casey, and a few others as that poured lots of love into our son

Response from the owner

We also greatly appreciate you taking the time to voice your concerns and would love the opportunity to chat further about how we can improve our communication and the experience for both our students and their families. If you'll reach out to our executive director at michele.surber@embarkbh.com we would love to discuss the communication issues further.

My family is so very grateful to Embark in Independence for helping our daughter with her substance abuse issues and depression. She's learned coping skills from a wonderful and caring staff. She's made friends that she's maintained contact and accountability with. I've heard and seen posts she's left on her social media about how much she appreciates the help she's received from EBH. I couldn't recommend them highly enough.

Words can’t explain how grateful I am for Embark in Independence Missouri. I recently celebrated my one year of being home from there and I still look back at Embark as the place that changed my life. Before being admitted, my family and I were in shambles. I constantly did things that hurt me and my family and there was a major divide between us. I was extremely depressed and I didn’t think I would make it past 18. But here i am a year and a half later, and adult, and doing better than ever. My family and I have an amazing, trusting relationship now. Every single staff member, supervisor, therapist, etc. uniquely helped shape me into the person I am today. I’m so thankful for all the patience and support they poured into me. I will never stop thanking them and giving them the credit for challenging me and helping my mindset shift. for all the kids who are planning to attend or just got out, i’m proud of you. it’s so hard and there’s no going around that. it’s the hardest thing my family and i have done. but it’s worth it. it’s worth it to be happy and content. it’s going to be difficult to be away from your family and friends. and it’s going to be difficult to want to work with the program and to participate. ITS GOING TO GET WORSE BEFORE IT GETS BETTER. even after you get out. i learned that the hard way. but you have to trust the process and you have to want to get better. it takes time but I promise your soul will be at peace soon. When I started at embark, I truly didn’t know who I wanted to be or what I wanted to do but now I have found my calling. Embark helped me come into my faith as well as find my career path, and that is to help kids the same way I was helped and eventually become a therapist. The friends I’ve made there will be my lifelong friends because i don’t get to share such a special time of my life with anyone else. i still talk to most of them to this day. you will meet your family there. Thank you embark for believing in me and my family. i know i wasn’t an easy kid but i sure did make that place fun 😁😁😁

My daughter was here for 100 days during the winter. I could never say enough about the staff. Each staff member truly has their own unique gift to offer and when combined have the ability to change lives. Embark gave me the greatest blessing I could hope for. I dropped off a resentful child but reconnected and brought home a daughter. We still have problems. It's not a 100% cure all but the days there changed us both in ways I will forever be grateful for. If you're researching, just considering, or looking for help, take the step and make the call. I hope they can transform your lives as well.
