I attended the outpatient program at embark and it was an awful experience. I was told that i would get family therapy, which they did not provide in the month i attended.

As a PhD neuroscientist at NIH who studies brain conditions, I expected evidence-based care for my son. Instead, Embark refused to work with my child’s existing team of excellent state-appointed providers and top pediatrician. They would not communicate with these experts or align with the measurable outcomes already established by the county’s thorough assessment. Embark had no interest in coordinating care - only in billing my insurance. When I asked reasonable questions about treatment approaches and outcomes, they shut me down. Rather than address my legitimate concerns, they characterized my questions as “relationship issues with the mother” to justify additional charges to my insurance company. This facility preys on desperate parents with good insurance. They refused collaboration with established providers and became hostile when I advocated for my son’s best interests. Two years later, I can confidently say: avoid this program. Find providers who prioritize measurable outcomes and teamwork over insurance revenue. I am a PhD brain scientist at NIH with a son that was diagnosed at age 6 with a behavioral disorder. I have received excellent support and care from providers and treatment centers over the years, but Embark stands out as an absolute disaster on multiple levels. 1) The staff is disorganized. They confused referrals for future providers with past providers that had treated my son, that would have provided useful clinical information to Embark 2) They use family therapy to discuss their internal grievances as opposed to having my son with me for actual therapy 3) My family therapy was set for 9am, even though my son arrived at IOP at 4pm. 4) They billed me personally for the same treatment they submitted to insurance and wanted payment from both me and insurance, even though I had reached my out of pocket max and all treatment was to be covered by insurance. When asked to resubmit to insurance, they refused to do it. 5) Any documents they were supposed to provide, I had to circle back 4-5 times to get what was promised to me. There is no follow through on what they promise to do. If you aren't an organized person, you will never get what you need. 6) They were rude and dismissive with my son's pediatrician. She was the only provider they spoke to, thanks to her taking the lead on reaching out to them. 7) I've shared Embark's emails to me with other top tier professionals in the field and they are shocked and disheartened at Embark's lack of professionalism and pejorative tone. 8) My child had a great experience at Newport Academy. I continue to use the alumni support that is provided to parents and clients of Newport every single day. 9) Many other families I know are thrilled with the support they receive from Newport Academy. 10) As a mom and professional in the field stay away from this place that is level 10 disaster. You will be left feeling frustrated, disappointed, and angry. Your time will be wasted trying to communicate effectively with staff that lack professional acumen, with limited ability to problem solve and accomplish basic tasks e.g. send a list of referrals or connect with a treatment provider for clinical information.

Dear Alisa, we are very sorry to hear about the described negative experience.
Our short-term residential program was created with each client’s well-being and effective care as our top priority. The goal is to get back to one’s family and community as soon as possible. We believe in providing healing, family-based treatment. We understand that the treatment process does not always involve what parents expect, or start when would be ideal for caregivers. The choice to seek treatment is the family and client’s choice.
We understand that the communication between behavioral health and health care providers is essential to youth’s healing journey. That’s why our therapists and staff work hard to communicate effectively and remain organized when working with past care providers, so that we can focus on what matters most to our program and staff, helping youth address difficult mental health challenges.
We are sorry that your insurance options may not have been able to provide coverage for care. We have more in network insurance options than ever with our goal to provide parents, caregivers, and families with more access to the behavioral health care that they need to create lives filled with joy. We hope that these new options may be able to provide more options for you and other families.
We appreciate you for taking the time to voice your struggles and concerns. Embark is committed to increasing awareness and lowering the stigma surrounding mental health; and is focused on creating access to high-quality, evidence-based care. We have set out on a big goal to reverse our nation’s youth mental health crisis. Thank you for your feedback, please reach out to our Executive Director, Karina Campbell, at Karina.Campbell@embarkbh.com so that we can discuss this issue further.

My kids were having a difficult time this year for many reasons and this was a great place to re-set. Everyone was so kind and accommodating and helped us as a whole family. I really trust the care they got and while I expect we still have work to do we are a lot less lost on where to go from here. Also since ending care with Embark, we have been able to get some guidance (before we left as well but even after) on resources outside of their center. Special gratitude to Lydia, Lee and Cameron. Chris from the front desk and Diana from group were also such kind souls. I wish we didn’t have struggles but at the same time we met the kindest people to help us navigate this phase. And now have skills to cope when things come up again (which they will on some level for sure.)

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Clients who are leaving inpatient rehab often choose to transition into an intensive outpatient program (IOP) to receive high-level support as they reintegrate into their home, workplace, and community. Intensive outpatient rehab also benefits those at risk of relapse. Clients typically participate in nine to 20 hours of treatment weekly, with modalities ranging from psychotherapy to addiction and recovery education. Many programs also provide medication assisted treatment (MAT) and complementary care, such as nutrition counseling, and acupuncture.

Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term intensive rehab option designed to provide treatment during the day and you're able to return home at night. PHP treatment offers structured programming, including individual and group therapy, typically meeting 3-5 days a week for 6-8 hours per day. PHP duration averages around 90 days, with some programs offering amenities like transportation and meals.

Treatments

Maryland's addiction experts understand the importance of dual-diagnosis addiction treatment in their inpatient and outpatient recovery programs. Dual-diagnosis means having two mental health disorders at the same time, like addiction and depression. By treating individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions simultaneously, they can enhance recovery outcomes and improve overall health, reducing the risk of relapse. Programs include evidence-based therapies, family counseling, recovery support groups, and skills training. Additional services may include medically assisted detox, 12-Step facilitation, equine therapy, complementary treatments, and alumni programs.

Treatment for drug and alcohol addiction often centers on improving mental health. Inpatient care is ideal for people who need closer monitoring while receiving therapeutic and mental health services. Standard therapies include group and individual counseling, relapse prevention education, coping skills training, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing and family support groups. With all critical therapies combined, there is a greater chance for improving mental health and achieving sustained recovery.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Maryland emphasizes your current life rather than what has happened in the past. Your therapist will help you develop methods to deal with current and future challenges so you can cope in healthy ways that don't involve substances.

Individualized one on one therapy allows the therapist to focus on your specific challenges and strengths. Using a personalized approach enables the therapist to help you develop effective coping mechanisms and build a more stable and fulfilling substance free life.

Accreditations

The Joint Commission, formerly known as JCAHO, is a nonprofit organization that accredits rehab organizations and programs. Founded in 1951, the Joint Commision's mission is to improve the quality of patient care and demonstrating the quality of patient care.
