About Diablo Valley Drug and Alcohol Services: Daniel Smeester, MD

Diablo Valley Drug and Alcohol Services in San Ramon, California, provides addiction recovery services for adults. They also offer specialized care if you have a co-occurring addiction and mental illness.

They provide outpatient medical detox under the supervision of a qualified medical doctor. If you’re experiencing alcohol or opioid addiction, you might also qualify for medication assisted treatment using Suboxone.

Their outpatient programs offer a complete continuum of care, which means you can continue to live at home and work while also getting the robust support you need. You can engage in individual and group counseling and a range of holistic therapies, such as massage therapy. The goal, ultimately, is to help you find health and healing in body, mind, and spirit.

One thing that stands out to me is they have a separate doctor on site who specializes in pain management. She offers a full array of effective options to alleviate the discomfort of those braving the recovery process from drugs. This can help you with other related issues like sleeplessness or unexpected weight loss. Getting your appetite back can help you feel better mentally and physically.

I like that they also address the total perspective regarding reentering society after a battle with addiction, helping people get back out there and engage in life once again. They provide a convenient telephone appointment to plan for admission and to discuss payment options.

Prior patients said they really felt heard and validated by the doctors on staff during therapy.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient Rehab

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient programs are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs. At Diablo Valley Drug and Alcohol Services, both locations- Pleasant Hill and San Ramon- offer two separate intensive outpatient rehab tracks with different schedules so that clients have the freedom to choose whichever treatment schedule best fits into their lives. Outpatient Program Intensive outpatient programs consist of clinical sessions spread over the course of three days. Clients at Diablo Valley have the option to enroll in either the Monday-Wednesday-Friday program or the Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday program based on the plan that can be most easily integrated into their normal schedule. Both tracks consist of a minimum of nine clinical hours per week; sessions are held in the evening on weekdays and in the morning on Saturdays to allow for patients to maintain jobs, school schedules, or other responsibilities.

12-step icon12-Step

Participants engaged in 12 step programs receive intensive peer coaching (sponsorship) and community support. Spiritual development as a means of achieving psychological and emotional healing and growth is the cornerstone of 12 step recovery, but religious affiliations are not required. Meetings are free, anonymous, and open to the public, though specialized formats are available, including groups for seniors, teens, and family members. Evening, night, and day meetings are conducted year-round in most communities.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

It can be difficult to approach a loved one that is abusing drugs or alcohol for fear of making matters worse or evoking a sense of betrayal. Although family and loved ones may have the best intentions, they may not be successful in persuading an individual to get help without professional assistance. Many individuals struggling with an addiction to either drugs or alcohol do not decide to seek help for substance abuse until they are faced with the opportunity and encouraged by those around them to seek out a lifestyle that better benefits their well-being. Interventions are scheduled meetings in which an experienced intervention specialist guides and chaperones loved ones as they encourage their addicted loved one to seek professional help for an addiction.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Addiction, like all diseases, does not only affect the diagnosed individual. The pain and stress of a substance use disorder affect not only the client but also their family and social network, who suffer the pain of living with an active addict or alcoholic. Family Counseling Services In response, family members engage in coping mechanisms that may ultimately fuel their loved one’s addictive behavior, such as enabling. I have been a patient of Doctor Smeester for many years. His professionalism and demeanor are top notch! Doctor Smeester cares for his patients, his staff, and his colleagues. Most importantly, in my opinion, he and his staff advocates for his patients in the community, the legal world, and with insurance companies and pharmacies. Doctor Smeester is also just a very nice person, and always a pleasure to be around.
