I spent 20 months and 26 days at Devereux in Victoria Texas, starting in 1968, when I was 14 years old. I spent a considerable amount of time in an isolation cell on four separate occasions; once for six days another time for 32 days, once more for 45 days and the last time just a few days. The cells were small enough that I could put my hands on one wall and my feet on the opposite wall and ‘walk’ up to the ceiling. I had nothing other than my underpants and a plastic wrapped mattress on the floor. There was about a one-foot space around the mattress that l used to walk in rectangular loops around the room for exercise. There was no handle on the interior side of the door. There was a very small window, about three inches wide by eight inches tall that the attendant/ guard could look through. Each time I was put in there I was never told when or if I would ever be let out. At Devereux I was forced to take medications such as stelazine, librium and dilantin (I never once had a seizure). I learned very early that if I didn’t willingly take the medication that the attendants would wrestle you to the floor, hold open your mouth and force the pill(s) to the back of your throat. They would then hold your mouth closed and pinch your nose until you swallowed. During the 2nd time I was in isolation (for 32 days) I came to the realization that freedom was a state of mind independent of your location. Upon this realization the utter intensity of the depression I felt from being confined like this went away. Most of the reasons I was locked in isolation were associated with my attempts to run away. Once though when I was in for 45 days, for participating in setting a fire. I was physically threatened by the other older kids to accept full responsibility. I was the only person punished for something which involved about ten of us all together. At almost 16 I was let out of Devereux to the custody of my adopted parents. Two months later I left home for good.

I was in Victoria tx 1984-1985 this horrible place has left me with lasting scars from my time here. There staff was awful never actually doing an supervision unless fights broke out the federal us trash but charged $17.50 per meal the abuse of teacher kids to make a neutral mark to " make there grade for the day " did absolutely nothing for behavioral health other than teacher a generation of teens how manipulation works . 4 girls got pregnant during my time her I was 1 of the 4. All I can say is he place is abusive neglectfully to the kids they were entrusted with. Please don't consider this place ever if you actually care for the lifelong success of your child. They will only abuse your kid. The trauma of institutions is horribly damaging the abuse i endured is unacceptable.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I was there for a year in 1980-81 when I was 15. The only good thing was that they took us on some trips from time to time, and I met several friends while there. But I read several of the other reviews, and I do have to agree with them. Looking back on it, they did mishandle the kids and often drugged them up. Luckily, I never got on meds, but many others did. The education there was absolutely awful which put me a grade behind. Most of the staff had very little if any compassion on the kids including me, nor did they really help people there in any positive way. Oh, do they still lock people up in isolation this current day like they did back then? Now, at age 53 and from a Christian point of view, kids and even adults who have mental disorders need loving and understanding as well as encouragement. Looking back, it really was an awful place.
