About Denver Indian Health and Family Services

Denver Indian Health and Family Services is an integrated behavioral health facility in Denver, Colorado. This facility addresses mental health and substance use disorders. They provide culturally competent outpatient services that foster quality health for American Indians and Alaskan Natives. This includes adults, children and families in the Denver metropolitan area.

This facility is accredited by the AAAHC. This confirms their commitment to quality and individualized treatment. It’s also financially convenient that they can finance your treatment using IHS funding. However, you must commit to working with their therapist for ongoing treatment to access funding.

They primarily offer outpatient counseling for those affected by substance use disorders. This program delivers proven therapeutic practices including cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviews through individual and family counseling. The sessions may focus on coping mechanisms, life skill development and building/strengthening relationships. This is essential for lasting recovery.

The sessions are characteristically trauma focused and culturally responsive. This means that the treatment aligns with and is tailored to respect the rich cultural traditions of the American Indians and Alaskan natives. You’ll have access to counselors trained in Native-specific trauma-focused CBT and motivational interviews.

The facility will refer you to a community inpatient recovery facility if you’re dealing with severe substance use disorder. Referral is typically provided after screening. They also offer wellness services including personal fitness assessments, tailored fitness and nutritional plans.

This facilitates ‘whole person’ recovery that addresses the physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of addiction. Rapid HIV/AIDS testing is also available. Their aftercare services may involve referral to community support services for ongoing care. Comments from past clients reflect an overall positive experience and impressive quality of care.

I'm a MMIW survivor in May 6th by my husband. I had half of my face shattered and Denver Health didn't treat my TBI they quickly intervened and got MRI of my brain that showed TBI and I couldn't believe how they missed that at Denver Health. They have taken very well wrapped around care for me racism against Native Americans at other clinics are real I've experienced that going through this trauma. I almost lost my eye socket is shattered. My bones are still broken and specialist outside this clinic are not treating me. Please give them grace they are a small clinic that is short staffing and probably getting backlash from medicaid or those who pay the clinic it's always Bureaucracy. Thank you all the staffing that took my attempted unaliving seriously I don't know what I would do without you. They're usually very good but seem to be having trouble with staffing and my mom can't get a return call for a referral for her biopsy. The n.p. was kind of nonchalant about it even though she's had cancer twice. It's difficult enough to deal with and this just adds stress.

This facility is a travesty. They are hired to heal and help people. Instead, they choose to kick vital appointments for health and healing down the road with absurd excuses each step of the way. The clinical staff are sympathetic enough, but when it comes to interactions with basically any other department especially the pharmacy you might as well count yourself lucky to get a voicemail box. They are some of the rudest staff you could ever encounter. Having to go to a health related appointment is a stressful enough situation without having to worry about how the staff will treat you in any capacity. I wish anyone who has the great misfortune of relying on this clinic for care luck in actually receiving the care you need.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients engaged in a rehab aftercare program have completed active addiction treatment and are receiving services designed to promote their sustained sobriety. Drug rehab aftercare typically encompasses a wide variety of medical, mental health, and social services meant to facilitate clients' reintegration into their home, workplace, and community. Clients typically collaborate with their case manager and/or recovery team to identify and access the services they need, often including peer coaching, career counseling, and care referrals.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
A drug intervention in Colorado is necessary when someone needs help with substance abuse but is unwilling to stop using despite multiple negative consequences. Intervention services are available to walk family and friends through a step-by-step process of planning and executing the intervention. A successful intervention requires careful planning and set-up as well as appropriate follow-up. Intervention services can be crucial to carrying out each of these steps.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Professional services are often necessary to recover from addiction. Drug rehab in Colorado provides the expert services needed to address the complex issues of addiction and help individuals start their recovery journey.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Well they were great starting off but sadly I found how they really operate within a couple weeks of my initial appointment. I had my first appointment to establish care and do routine bloodwork etc. During this appointment, I got a referral for a program they offer that had me feeling optimistic and hopeful that I could finally get the support I felt I needed. So I waited for them to give me a call to set up my second appointment- and I waited, and waited, and waited. I called the clinic to get connected with this person and after about 3 calls trying to get through to said person, I was finally able to leave her a message. Now I will say she was very prompt calling me back. We got the appointment set up and I m feeling good again. Flash forward to a week ago. They call me right before my appointment saying they are having a maintenance emergency and they need to reschedule. No problem, things happen. I m rescheduled to a few days later. On my way to rescheduled appointment, they call and say they still can t see me. At this point, I m very upset because I ve missed an entire days pay from work not to mention this particular appointment is necessary to get a medication I m prescribed to. She apologizes profusely (again I know this isn t the providers fault, however this is not acceptable patient care either way). She says that due to my inconveniences, she will put a note to the pharmacy to let me fill ahead of my appointment. Awesome! I was super grateful and went about my business. Flash forward to a couple days ago- called the pharmacy (they NEVER answer btw- you must leave a message) left my message. The woman who called me back... Omg probably the RUDEST person I have ever had the displeasure of speaking to in healthcare. Says I don t even know how YOU got a referral, you should just pay full price for your meds at your local pharmacy I said ma am unfortunately I can t do that my medicines price is astronomically high, this is why I m coming to this clinic for help. She does not care shows no empathy at all. Tells me that she would not fill my prescription anyway. To me it was her saying get lost we don t care to help you She flat out told me I m not as important as other patients and I ll just have to figure it out on my own. I have gone to many tribal clinics from here to Montana and have never been treated so poorly. My grandmother is a retired very well regarded accountant for IHS and is appalled on what is going on here. I am currently still trying to work on getting my one medicine filled-an entire month after my appointment where it was prescribed!! This is just plain negligent and dangerous if you ask me (or anyone else that s reasonable). Don t come here if you need any sort of urgent care or help because they are a totally shoddy operation and don t care about their patients at all it seems.

Total lack of communication and that referral person has no clue what my mom needed! She was a nurse and said kia is totally unprofessional and doesn't return phone calls until she had to ask for a supervisor.. No empathy from staff either.
