About Creedmoor Psychiatric Center

Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, in Queens, New York, offers inpatient mental health care at the main hospital and both residential and outpatient care at clinics throughout Queens. They focus on treating adults. Creedmoor doesn’t offer addiction care specifically but can give referrals to substance use rehabs.

What makes Creedmoor different is that the inpatient program has a lot more amenities than most hospital treatment programs. For example, there’s a cafe, beauty shop and exercise room. Clients can access art and music therapy and there’s an auditorium for special events. You also get the services you would expect, including life skills classes, counseling, education and job training, and recreation.

The services away from the main campus are amazingly varied too. There are living houses for those with developmental disabilities and severe mental illness, outpatient mobile treatment services, care coordination, and wraparound support.

The goal of Creedmoor is to stabilize clients and give them the skills and support they need to live independently. The center has tremendous resources focused on that goal, so clients are highly likely to get the care they need at one of the many clinics around Queens.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Inpatient rehabs provide a space for clients to focus exclusively on their recovery while receiving intensive supervision and support. Inpatient treatment centers provide housing and food and most offer round-the-clock clinical care. Their primary treatment modalities typically consist of addiction counseling using various psychotherapeutic methods, including CBT, DBT, RBT, and motivational interviewing. Many rehabs also provide specialized services for clients with co-occurring addiction and mental illness. Recovery-focused life skills training and holistic therapies are other common services.

people-group iconIntervention Services

A drug intervention in New York occurs when family members and friends lovingly confront someone with a substance use disorder. The goal of this confrontation is to motivate the person to seek treatment. Loved ones point out how the person's destructive behavior is affecting them in hopes that they will agree to get help. Most inpatient rehab facilities offer intervention services that can help families walk through this process step by step.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Couples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Family Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Nutrition Therapy

As you recover from addiction, eating the right foods will help you heal and build your health for long term sobriety. Nutrition therapy teaches you about the nutrition your body needs and how to eat the right foods to support your recovery.

Creative Arts Therapy

When recovering from addiction, it can be difficult to find the words to express your emotions and thoughts. Creative arts therapy in New York gives you a way to express yourself beyond words. Options include sculpting, music, drawing, dance, and drama.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

This place has been reported several times, and they do nothing. For starters, they don't help or care about their residents as they should, and in consequence, they have a real mess going on. And to finish, they have caused nothing but issues for the people that live nearby ... Read More

From ages 12-15, I worked here.Mrs. Davis, a very sweet lady, was our supervisor. First, I worked the radio for campus security. Second, with the carpenter shop. And finally, in the Hematology lab (where I first saw an autopsy - while eating lunch!).Now, it is still, partially in use. I could barely recognize it! The plants and rust have overtaken the beautiful buildings I recall. Some new (public??) housing surrounds the campus now.

Ruining our community. They let their patients out and they terrorize the kids at ps18 Park and I'm talking about toddlers!Today one of the patients was at burlington dept. Store opening car doors and taunting people. DisgustingNo one does anything! You can call police no one does anything.
