About Childrens Service Center

Children’s Service Center is an addiction treatment center for youth living in the Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, area. I find it admirable that they realize the importance of teaching our children the importance of having a healthy outlook when it comes to drugs and alcohol. Some young people are already struggling with addiction, and this center knows how to intervene in that situation. They are an outpatient clinic, which means your young one can still attend school and doesn’t have to make a full commitment as far as scheduling goes. They are also a dual diagnosis center. This means they treat people with co-occurring mental health issues that coincide with their substance addiction. This is more common than you’d think.

Their outpatient program offers individual therapy, which is a crucial service for the recovery process. This service puts you one on one with a therapist. This gives your child the opportunity to feel like they can express themselves and be heard. They also put a heavy emphasis on family involvement. They’ll help your child put together his or her own prevention plan and strategy in order to combat temptation and peer pressure that might surface in the future. They also offer interventions if your child is heavily involved in substance use and needs encouragement to get treatment.

Once your child completes treatment they may be able to receive aftercare. These services provide ongoing support for long term success. They may include continued counseling, support groups and referrals to community resources.

Some ways of communication are outdated like not being able to leave direct voicemails with people, only leaving with office afaik. But they were great help in applying for Medicaid and counseling services. Getting appointment is difficult due to the demand for the current counselors , which is very unfortunate but understandable. Feels like a safe place to be in. I wish that we could communicate with counselors over other means than email

On October 10 2024 I walked in the doors of Children Service Center of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and asked for an alcohol evaluation. This was court mandated so I needed to find someplace to take the assessment, their name and number were written on the back of a card so this was the place I chose. Upon asking for the evaluation I was told that there was no one available on that date to take the assessment. They told me it was $146 for the assessment. They said you can pay today and I said fine so I gave them my credit card and they processed it. They scheduled my appointment for the following day on 10/11/2024. I walked in for my assessment on that date and a girl named Yasmin did my evaluation. At the end of the evaluation she said to me exactly in these words ( I don't think you have an alcohol problem) but I am referring you next door for a second assessment. I said to her why are you referring me if you just told me you didn't think I had an alcohol problem? She got mad and I basically said to her that makes no sense what you just did to me. I walked out and went downstairs and asked to speak to a manager about what happened. The manager says I don't know why she did that and then called next door to talk to someone. The girl on the phone said to have him come back next week on 10/17/2024 for my second assessment.Upon talking to Sara Tomsak it was determined that she wasn't sure why I was even here and said to me you don't have an alcohol problem so why did Yasmin refer me to them in the first place? So she reached out to her manager and they told her that I had no options at this point except to walk away and lose my money and go someplace else for a whole new alcohol evaluation or I could come back for 4 weeks for no reason and they would clear me with the court. I told her I would try it but then I went home and called a supervisor and spoke to her about all this and she said she would escalate it upstairs to someone higher up. Later that day I got a call from Eric Pollick Director of SUD Services. He asked me what happened and I explained all this to him so he said he would look into it and get back to me.A few days later he gets back to me and says he wasn't sure why Yasmin even sent me to the second facility in the first place. He said he looked into it and she was wrong and he was sorry and he said that If I would be willing to come back one more time the following week on 10/24/2024 that we would put an end to this and they would sign my papers and let me go. Terrible place to deal with, avoid at all costs.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
With a partial hospitalization program (PHP), you can participate in intensive rehabilitation treatment with the ability to return home at the end of the day. For a weekly minimum of 20 hours, a partial hospitalization program can take place up to 5 days a week for an average of 90 days. During PHP treatment, you can receive relapse prevention strategies, medication management, individual and group therapy, and other behavioral therapy interventions.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
A medical detox is the safest way to wean your body off drugs and/or alcohol in an inpatient setting. When detoxing from addictive substances, the physical and psychological side effects of withdrawal can cause mood swings, anxiety, nausea, or flu-like symptoms. In medically assisted detox, a team of medical professionals are on hand 24/7 to help alleviate potential withdrawal symptoms, administer medications to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, and ultimately keep you safe and comfortable throughout this process.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational interviewing in Pennsylvania gives you the opportunity to share your perspective and explore your ideas and motivation for change. Your therapist will walk you through the four steps of engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning to empower you to make any desired changes in your life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I love this place. I'm 49 I've been going here for almost 6 years. Throughout my life I've been to so so many psychiatrist and therapists and never got any results only ever did surface work until I started getting treatment here I swear to u if it weren't for children's service center I wouldn't be here today. My therapist dawn goes above and beyond never have I had anyone cate about me the way she and her supervisor has. This place has been with me through the worst and never gave up on me. Never did I ever think I'd be happy again. I wake up excited for each day. When things get hard they stay with me they take the time and I am telling u this place is not no 15 minute and see u later place they get to the root cause they actually give results. I will never switch. They care so much that make sure that u are ok and take as much time as they possibly can to help u. I recommend this place to.all adults and children struggling with mental health, anxiety, depression and the Robinson addiction center is top of the top the best if u want to get real results and feel better. I love children's service from Alice the secretary to the greatest therapist I have ever had in 49 years Dawn O'Donnell I love this place

I hate to give this facility a one star rating because not everyone who works there is terrible. However, from day one it was a nightmare for me. I had come from CCS in Wilkes-Barre. I had to find a new nurse practitioner once they closed. I was scheduled to see BRENDA TOCKET SMITH after three months of trying to get an appointment. My appointment with BRENDA TOCKET SMITH was cancelled twice, once while I was sitting in the parking lot of CSC twenty minutes before my appointment. Meanwhile, my prescription (non narcotic) was dangerously close to running out. Once I finally saw BRENDA TOCKET SMITH she COULD'T CARE LESS. You're lucky if BRENDA TOCKET SMITH remembers your name. BRENDA TOCKET SMITH screwed up my FMLA on several occasions, even up until today (9/21/24). I've recently decided to end my medical relationship with BRENDA TOCKET SMITH after not being able to get in touch with her for two and a half weeks and see an actual professional again. Today, (9/21/24), I received a bill from BRENDA TOCKET SMITH from five months ago. BRENDA TOCKET SMITH does not care about your mental health.

If you are Latino or Black DO NOT GO THERE they are racist. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. MICHAEL in May 2024 and as soon as I walked in I saw his reaction, He refused to evaluate my child because We are Bilingual and He said He needed to make sure my child was able to underdtant him, this not even 5 minutes after walking in the exam room. I expressed my concerns and that I consent him to evaluate my child, also my child does not speak a second language the bilingual was me the Mother and He still refused; however, I called back 2 days after to request an appointment and He called me back saying that He is the professional and He knows what He is doing. Sometimes physicians thinks We as citizens do not know our rights and in fact We do. I am also reporting him to the Board of Psychologyst in the State of Pennsylvania. What if a patient does not know their rights? why refuse to evaluate a child just because Family is Bilingual? and recommended me to take my child somewhere else.I am making this public, so be aware and take your child somewhere else.

If I could give this facility negative stars I would. Mostly because all they want to do is medication in our experience the child rarely sees the psychiatrist even for medication checks this place was also overdosing my child on medications our PCP discovered the overdose because child was having alot of medical problems while on the medications that they were overdosing the child on. They don't want to help the parent they just like to place blame on you for your children's behaviors ect.The therapist ect do NOT work on anything with the child's behaviors. They give you absolutely no support especially when your child has multiple diagnosis. They are well aware of my child's behaviors and background. They are well aware that child has rages and multiple times a day and sometimes for hours a day. They are aware that my child uses profanity towards others (but report you to CYS saying to CYS that all you do is curse at your children. I know that all therapist involved in my child's care got their stories all messed up. The therapist ect should learn what inappropriate discipline ect is but then again most of these therapist do NOT have children of thier own and once again don't even do any therapy ect with your child. Got that a little messed up when it's the Child that is the one who uses profanity at you. Therapist have been around when said child had rages. Therapist/counselor that child saw didn't really talk to the child guess inappropriate discipline is taking the child to child's bedroom until rages calm down especially with siblings around no one needs to see child's behaviors yet alone younger siblings, child uses profanity, hits, kicks, bites I can go on we should not have to let child rage in front of younger siblings and worry about the entire family's safety) also say to CYS that you treat the other children better if they do something they know is wrong the other children get disciplined they get toys ect taken away if they don't do something wrong why should they be punished so of course they get things like little extra reward ect ,but this place likes to make false accusations . They are also aware that my child lacks empathy as well as all behaviors ect. ( The list goes on) I could write a novel. My child has been suspended numerous times which they again are well aware of. When my child also threatened in school that he had a gun in his possession once again they were made aware of and did absolutely NOTHING) same day he threatened other students that the child was going to "KILL" them , also use profanity at other students ( They don't listen to you as the parent goes upon deaf ears they take nothing seriously) Guns in my home are locked in a gun safe) Thank God. child doesn't have Suicidal Ideation ( Child has Homicidal Ideation) Child has also been kicked off of the school bus numerous times and once again they are AWARE. They don't care and the child will say this to you when threatening "No one cares that I threaten" (crisis is worthless in my opinion) nothing ever takes place because they don't do their jobs at this place and take things seriously)What a joke this place is.. The children rarely speak with the psychiatrist. Therapist telling your child that they don't want the parent to upset the child.. news flash all you want to do is keep your children safe. They also like to make false reports to CYS. I would personally consider going somewhere else.. most therapist don't even engage with the children. You also call crisis and they are a joke as well. Please enlighten and tell me the difference between a child under the age of 10 threatening you with your entire family's life all the crisis therapist ask is if child is being suicidal homicidal doesn't matter. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE don't waste your time going here.. they really need to be looked at all therapist ect need further training in most mental illnesses. Most therapist ect here are the most unprofessional and under experienced that I have ever encountered in all facilities that I have ever been. SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN!!

Place is absolutely worthless and staffing is the entire problem from check in to counselors . It's a shame that children that need help have to even be subjected to this place. Had multiple issues with this place and I'm glad to never go back . Please look into other options for your children.

Me and my daughter both come here for therapy and medication. We love our therapists and I have never encountered a rude employee. After reading the bad reviews, it is clear that these people are the problem not the center. To get so worked up about minor things or things that can be fixed easily, you need to do self reflection and accept that it's your attitude that needs to change. Be grateful that you have access to these services and the profound work these therapists are doing. If one of them didn't call you back or you didn't connect with their style, don't call them out and trash them. They are trying to help us with things our parents should have helped us with. They have a big job to do and they are not robots. Sometimes they don't text or call or whatever. If this happens, talk to them about it instead of giving the whole center a one star scathing review. There are people who could benefit from seeing these therapists but see your reviews (which is sometimes borderline child throwing a tantrum rant) and decide to not come here but to another center that really doesn't care. Shame on you!
