About Atrium Health Behavioral Health Charlotte

Atrium Health Behavioral Health Charlotte is located in Charlotte, North Carolina. They provide inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services with a philosophy that people seeking help for substance use disorder (SUD) and mental health treatment should feel supported and empowered. They specifically look to integrate their behavioral health treatment into primary care.

They focus on working with primary care doctors to screen for, detect, and treat mental health problems as early as possible. They also want to educate communities about SUD and mental health issues.

They operate an around the clock crisis intervention line that has a staff of masters level mental health professionals along with registered nurses. They can also recommend behavioral health specialists and other information and services within the community for people in need of help.

Here they have a dedicated psychiatric emergency room staffed by 25 board certified psychiatrists for children, adolescents and adults who need immediate help while going through a mental health crisis.

Their program for children and teens is for kids struggling with behavioral or emotional problems in school or at home. They have inpatient and outpatient care options, school based therapy, a partial hospitalization (PHP) program, forensic psychiatry and psychology, and a Maternal Wellness Program for teens and young adults if needed.

Their adult program for people 18 and over includes both inpatient and outpatient care. They have addiction services, PHP, an Employee Assistance Program, a Community Capacity Restoration Program and interventional psychiatry services.

One former patient here said the staff at this clinic is phenomenal. Another said their doctor immediately engaged her daughter and listened intently while being knowledgeable, intelligent and kind. Someone also said they have a great structure here and an outstanding staff.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. Outpatient is available for children, teens and adults.

inpatient iconInpatient Rehab

Clients receiving treatment at an inpatient rehab facility are typically in early recovery or are at heightened risk of relapse. Clients in inpatient care remain at the facility for the duration of their program, enabling them to focus solely on their recovery. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive psychotherapy, often including group and family counseling as well as one-on-one sessions. Recovery-focused life skills education is another common service. Many rehabs also offer evidence-based holistic therapies.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) evolve with clients' changing needs and are often well-suited for clients exiting inpatient rehab and those at an increased relapse risk. These programs typically involve between nine and 20 hours of treatment weekly, with the intensity and frequency of care decreasing as clients stabilize. Most intensive outpatient rehabs integrate a variety of treatment modalities to maintain a high level of individualized care. Services generally include counseling, recovery education, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Individuals in early recovery often require 24-hour clinical care in North Carolina. This supervised care typically includes medications to treat specific withdrawal symptoms, which vary based on the substance abused. For example, staff may provide sleep aids to treat insomnia in patients who are addicted to marijuana. For those overcoming a cocaine use disorder, anti-depressants may be prescribed to manage mood swings. Other medications may also be provided to treat addiction-related health issues.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

A medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive drugs and alcohol from your body. A team of licensed medical professionals will look after you 24/7 to monitor your health, help minimize discomfort, and provide medications if necessary to alleviate any withdrawal symptoms. This process is typically the first step in your recovery and may take around 5-7 days, although length will depend on your individual needs.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

There are many types of drug rehab in North Carolina. To receive treatment for addiction, you can choose from many inpatient and outpatient programs. Often, participants start with detox and work through a full continuum of care that continues with ongoing support for long-term recovery.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Clients who receive cognitive behavioral therapy in North Carolina typically attend five to 20 sessions. During this time, they work with their therapist to learn healthier patterns of thinking, which can help them change their behavior related to substance use.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

recreational-therapy iconRecreational Therapy

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being. Recreational therapy is used on children and teens.

This place is the worst! needs a whole business model review and change! their business structure puts people in danger by allowing both male and female, severe and not severe people to stay in the same environment without proper supervision. the lack of empathy, compassion or supervision is mental distructive to the very people they are there to serve! i will be reporting this place to board!

Having been homeless between Christmas and the next during 1990, I lived and slept on the streets and woods. Injured on the job both my employer and the NC Workmen s Compensation Insurance denied me needed medical care after falling off a roof saving the boss money. I persevered, obtaining a lawyer pro bono, and sleeping in the winter. Finally winning my case and getting comprehensive physical therapy. I walked 25 miles to my old neighborhood and finding day work with a landscaper. Still slept in the woods with proper survival/camping gear. Eventually Goodwill Industries found a job and Crisis Assistance Ministries a room for a month. So here I am today.

My experience with Doctor Monica Bentley was the worst. She would listen but didn't hear a word I said. I explained to her that the meds she was giving me to treat my anxiety and depression wasn't working yet she insisted that she couldn't prescribe anything else. I had to go to emergency and the medication they gave me really helped me. I was told to follow up with my doctor and I made an appointment with her right away. Her response was "I never prescribe that for my patients " I said ok but what else can we try? She still insisted that we stick with the same medication that weren't working. Of course I told her that I would be requesting another doctor. Please know your rights, You your Psychiatrist and Therapist should be a team and if you feel that any member on YOUR team isn't working for your best interest let them go.

The worst decision I have ever made in my life was to take my son due to depression to this psychiatric hospital and I still have not been able to get him off the medicated drugs that caused him the most damage, from Multiple suicide attempts, Multiple hospitalizations caused by the effects . side effects of medications. I asked the doctors to reduce the medications my son was overmedicated and they didn't want to and I had to do it myself and the consequences were serious. They kept my son in the hospital for 2 months until they adapted him and poisoned him and then they discharged him with two antipsychotics. My son had 3 cases of violent acts due to the side effects of drugs.I ask for compassion for people who are suffering in a psychiatric hospital, for those who are overly medicated and for those who have been forgotten by their family and abandoned in a psychiatric care center. What I have left in my life is to get my son off of medicated drugs and help him get back to being the drug-free being of psychiatry. My son is taking medication for the diabetes caused by these drugs, medication for high blood pressure due to the anxiety caused by the drugs, elevated liver enzymes, obesity, and nocotine addiction. I know there is a place in his brain screaming for help! Here I leave the references of some books written by psychiatrists where they explain the toxicity of psychiatric drugs. There is also a book that talks about how to be free from them.Brain-Disabling Treatments in Psychiatry, discusses his theory of medication spellbinding (in which patients are said to do worse after treatment but fail to see this or recognize why),[3] the adverse effects of drugs and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), the hazards of diagnosing and medicating children, Breggin's theory of a "psychopharmaceutical complex", and guidelines for psychotherapy and counseling.Your Drug May Be Your Problem: How and Why to Stop Taking Psychiatric Medications https://a.co/d/bvt4RUUToxic Psychiatry: Why Therapy, Empathy and Love Must Replace the Drugs, Electroshock, and Biochemical Theories of the "New Psychiatry" https://a.co/d/3YHcyLN

Seems like a pill mill. Brought my teen for a consult for anxiety. The doctor had my child taken back to speak with them, without ever introducing themselves or even speaking to me. After 45 mins, they came out and recommended an anxiety medication my child has already tried unsuccessfully in the past. They made no time to speak with me in depth about my concerns or the issues my child has been having, but were ready to toss out Prescriptions like candy.Update 5/23/24. Called to see if an appointment could be changed from in person to virtual, as this office is an hour and half away and we had some issues come up short notice. Despite already having an in person appointment, I was rudely told that virtual appointments are only on certain days and it could not be switched. So even though I already have an in person hour long appointment scheduled, the doctor can't manage to turn on a computer for a virtual appt, and will instead sit around twiddling their thumbs during the now empty hour where my appointment should've been. Not only that, but the next available virtual appointment is two months from the original appt, and the medication will run out before then. Absolutely appalling patient care all around from this sad excuse of an office.
