About Atrium Health Behavioral Health Charlotte

Atrium Health Behavioral Health Charlotte is located in Charlotte, North Carolina. They provide inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services with a philosophy that people seeking help for substance use disorder (SUD) and mental health treatment should feel supported and empowered. They specifically look to integrate their behavioral health treatment into primary care.

They focus on working with primary care doctors to screen for, detect, and treat mental health problems as early as possible. They also want to educate communities about SUD and mental health issues.

They operate an around the clock crisis intervention line that has a staff of masters level mental health professionals along with registered nurses. They can also recommend behavioral health specialists and other information and services within the community for people in need of help.

Here they have a dedicated psychiatric emergency room staffed by 25 board certified psychiatrists for children, adolescents and adults who need immediate help while going through a mental health crisis.

Their program for children and teens is for kids struggling with behavioral or emotional problems in school or at home. They have inpatient and outpatient care options, school based therapy, a partial hospitalization (PHP) program, forensic psychiatry and psychology, and a Maternal Wellness Program for teens and young adults if needed.

Their adult program for people 18 and over includes both inpatient and outpatient care. They have addiction services, PHP, an Employee Assistance Program, a Community Capacity Restoration Program and interventional psychiatry services.

One former patient here said the staff at this clinic is phenomenal. Another said their doctor immediately engaged her daughter and listened intently while being knowledgeable, intelligent and kind. Someone also said they have a great structure here and an outstanding staff.

I would HIGHLY recommend looking elsewhere. Atrium overcharges for their psychiatric services. 30 min sessions out of pocket before meeting my deductible is around ~$250 and for an hour is about ~$450. My new psychiatrist is $96 for an hour session for reference. I have also been without medicine on multiple occasions because they failed to refill meds when asked. I once went without medication for over a month due to their understaffing and inability to get back with me. Atrium is difficult to get in touch with and if you call you will be on hold for anywhere from 15min -30 min on a good day. If you are having an emergency do not rely on them as a psychiatric resource if you need help in a timely fashion (i.e. in the same day you called). They do not respond to emergency requests until you have sent a request to speak to their upper management (i.e. made a threat to give visibility to lack of care). As far as the treatment, it was okay at best but bad at certain times. I could take it or leave it given the other very negative aspects of being a patient here. As someone who was trying to go on a regular cadence my overall experience is that they think an awful lot of their services ($$) to give extremely poor care. My specific doctor was very quick to dismiss my concerns and as I became increasingly agitated of session after session of expensive care where she refused to change my meds to take care of my anxiety and depression. However in our last session when I told her the trauma behind my anxiety attacks I had been complaining about for years, she asked if I was hearing voices and slapped me with more mania meds and did nothing to help my depression or anxiety. FYI it s been a week on my upped dose and it didn t magically make my depression go away or make me feel ANY better. So that was a waste of money. Being vulnerable with her left me feeling as though she did not believe me, she did not trust me, and that my bipolar diagnosis led her to have opinions about me that had never been validated by my behavior. I hate that I put up with this place for as long as I have.I do not recommend this place unless it is your only option.

Staff is great, however the facility charges $100 building fee that is not covered by insurance for inperson appointments. Atrium has also requested their doctors to limit virtual appointments to only 20% of their clients making it more difficult for clients on a budget.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. Outpatient is available for children, teens and adults.
inpatient iconInpatient
Clients receiving treatment at an inpatient rehab facility are typically in early recovery or are at heightened risk of relapse. Clients in inpatient care remain at the facility for the duration of their program, enabling them to focus solely on their recovery. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive psychotherapy, often including group and family counseling as well as one-on-one sessions. Recovery-focused life skills education is another common service. Many rehabs also offer evidence-based holistic therapies.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) evolve with clients' changing needs and are often well-suited for clients exiting inpatient rehab and those at an increased relapse risk. These programs typically involve between nine and 20 hours of treatment weekly, with the intensity and frequency of care decreasing as clients stabilize. Most intensive outpatient rehabs integrate a variety of treatment modalities to maintain a high level of individualized care. Services generally include counseling, recovery education, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Individuals in early recovery often require 24-hour clinical care in North Carolina. This supervised care typically includes medications to treat specific withdrawal symptoms, which vary based on the substance abused. For example, staff may provide sleep aids to treat insomnia in patients who are addicted to marijuana. For those overcoming a cocaine use disorder, anti-depressants may be prescribed to manage mood swings. Other medications may also be provided to treat addiction-related health issues.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
A medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive drugs and alcohol from your body. A team of licensed medical professionals will look after you 24/7 to monitor your health, help minimize discomfort, and provide medications if necessary to alleviate any withdrawal symptoms. This process is typically the first step in your recovery and may take around 5-7 days, although length will depend on your individual needs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

There are many types of drug rehab in North Carolina. To receive treatment for addiction, you can choose from many inpatient and outpatient programs. Often, participants start with detox and work through a full continuum of care that continues with ongoing support for long-term recovery.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Clients who receive cognitive behavioral therapy in North Carolina typically attend five to 20 sessions. During this time, they work with their therapist to learn healthier patterns of thinking, which can help them change their behavior related to substance use.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being. Recreational therapy is used on children and teens.

Disgusting and unimaginable lack of any assessment, or treatment, or even referral for my daughter who had written and emailed a suicide note. Totally dismissed the documented rage and abuse from my daughter. The staff totally dismissing her hysteric sister, her mother and a former police Officer. This is a dangerous place to take anyone in need of crucial mental Heath. It s terrifying, with the mental health crisis in our society, that this place is allowed to operate or allowed to treat Anyone.

When I was little and suicidal, I was brought to THIS PLACE, and that was the most traumatizing and awful experience I've ever been through, I fear to even talk about my mental health again because I don't want to be sent to this place or anywhere like it ever again. The doctors were all narcissists, saying I was selfish for being suicidal and that I should rethink my values, I sat there inside with my mom for 4 whole hours waiting for my application into the "Hosptial". Thank god for my statement overturning it, as I don't think I would ever be the same if the app went through. And I say all of this now as a 15 year old, still suicidal, probably even more so because of this damn place.

I recently had a disheartening experience with Joshua David Richter, MD at Atrium health Behavioral. While I understand the complexities of unconscious bias, it was deeply concerning to witness how it impacted the interaction with my son. It's important for healthcare providers to be mindful of their own biases and actively work to mitigate their influence on patient care. Allowing patients to fully express their concerns and complete their thoughts is a fundamental aspect of effective communication. I am well aware that prescriptions are sent electronically. If the provider would have let me finish my sentence I was asking for my son to have a prescription wrote out in two 30 day prescriptions to buy me time it was very interesting that he didn t know of CHADIS it s a online system that delivers questionnaires that help your child's doctor review the health and development of your child. It is experiences like this that fuel my passion for healthcare. I actually worked at Atrium Health and the Levine children s department so with the providers unconscious bias I laughed it off because I do know how we as African-American people are treated especially in the healthcare world I strive to create a more empathetic and understanding environment for all patients, particularly those from marginalized communities.I hope Joshua David Richter, MD will take this feedback as an opportunity for growth and reflection. By fostering a culture of active listening and respect, we can create a healthcare system that truly prioritizes the well-being of all individuals.

I'm sharing my experience though from their responses to other patients, they could care less. It is evident they should never have chosen the profession of helping people with mental health problems. I have a family member with suicidal ideation but they sent them home anyway after I thoroughly explained their history. It is sad how callous and lacking in empathy psychiatrists at this facility are. First thing they wanted to do was medicate my family member. They never sort input from family, no family therapy. Just a quote "plan of care" and sent them packing, suicidal ideation and all. Shame on you to call yourself a mental healthcare facility. Despicable. I pray God is more merciful to you than you were to my family member.

I rarely leave reviews but after dealing with this place for two years I have to say: if you have the ability to look elsewhere please do so. I have NEVER seen anyone consistently, I have an appointment with one person and by the time I go to book a follow up they no longer work there. Which sets me back to square 1 in terms of treatment. I expressed this concern to the last person I saw and she assured me that she would be staying but in the case if she left she would contact me. Well guess what? I went to book a follow up and she no longer works there and I haven t heard from her. this is such a serious matter and can only imagine how difficult and discouraging this may be for others that are in need of help. Look somewhere else
