About Cape Fear Valley Behavioral Health Hospital

Patients of all ages in Fayetteville, North Carolina can access psychiatric care from the Behavioral Health Care Inpatient Unit of Cape Fear Valley. You’ll be taken care of by a team of psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, mental health professionals and social workers.

Here, you can get emergency mental health care as well as inpatient care for severe mental health disorders. I like that this facility prioritizes low patient to staff ratios. This means you’ll get the attention you need.

Once you’re stable, you’ll be released to another residential program or to go back home. You’ll continue to work closely with a case manager the week after you leave to make sure you have ongoing care set up.

Previous clients are mixed. Happy clients talk about their excellent care that led to recovery. The unhappy ones tend to mention a lack of empathy and kindness from doctors as well as late and missed appointments and rudeness from reception.

Cape Fear Valley Medical offers a financial assistance program. You can apply for this if you are low income to pay for all or part of your medical care.

My daughter has been a patient of CFVMH on and off,due to moving out of state, beginning in 2018. It is very hard to find good mental health care anymore and Dr. Sundar was no exception. My daughter was is desperate need of a provider that genuinely cares about her patients and commits to the Code of Ethics that governs and sets the standard for all Mental Health providers. Dr. Sundar was never sincere in her practices but she was our only option at the time. She prescribed medication to my daughter that were totally inappropriate and only made her condition worsen despite reports and concerns from my daughter and our family. My daughter moved away to live with her father for some time where she received no mental health or medical care at all. She recently moved back with me and CfVMH was the only practice that could see her for treatment in a reasonable amount of time. My daughter had an extremely hard time adjusting to being back and had been immensely traumatized while she was away. When we made the appointment we emphasized the urgency of her need for treatment yet we still had to wait several weeks for her appointment. Everyday was a struggle and we even had to resort to going to the emergency room in an attempt to get her something to stabilize her just enough to get by safely until her appointment on the 12th. The office called us to confirm her appointment for the following day. We were so relieved that we would finally be able to get her some help. On the day of her appointment, approximately 2 hours before her scheduled appointment, some staff member called to cancel the appointment, stating that the Dr. Would not be there to see her. The girl was reluctant to disclose her name and would not disclose her job title or position in the company. She stated that they would not have an appointment available for another month. I explained that my daughter was in crisis and it was urgent that she be seen by some provider. She claimed there was nothing available and suggested that we go to the emergency room again. I told her that it was highly unprofessional, unethical and unacceptable business practices. She refused to provide me with the name of her supervisor or the Director of the company. I am completely baffled by the standards of our Healthcare professionals these days. This type of situation should never be allowed to happen. When you are in the Mental Health field you should have genuine compassion and a moral obligation to DO NO HARMAnd patients should be able to trust their providers to help them and always have their best interest as their number 1 priority and expect reasonable and timely treatment and care. This company has not only failed to provide appropriate treatment in a timely manner but they have imposed harm and done damage to an already fragile mental health situation. This kind of practice should never be tolerated by any consumer that entrusts this company with their care. I will be filling a grievance and reporting malpractice and misconduct with every office, board or commission associated with this company. We cannot allow these things to happen and it is becoming more and more common. They could have made other arrangements for my daughter prior to her appointment if the Doctor was not going to be able to follow through with her responsibilities and obligations. There are a plethora of solutions that could have been used to avoid this very problematic outcome. As a consumer we are held accountable if we fail to cancel an appointment in a timely manner and the same standards and expectations should reasonably apply to the provider. This is becoming way too commonplace and something needs to be done about what we allow and accept for paid services that are so sensitive in nature. This is a terrible place with unprofessional staffing they are illequiped to practice medicine or be responsible for ANY Persons care where they are already so vulnerable. This company should be shut down and none of the staff should be employed with any other company.

I ve been in and out of the children s behavioral health, and I can say every time before I went in there, I would be so scared, but once I got in there every time I began to warm up And I love the staff there. some of them may have attitudes like the night shift staff. but they do provide and help you and make you feel safe and I love the nurses and I feel like being there related to help me and it really did show me that people cared about me now that I ve been out for a bit. It is kind of traumatic looking back at it, but it really did help me

Not helpful, my daughter came home worse. I can assume it s due to her misbehavior and lies being believed. I feel like their job is to stablize short term well being drugged up. Then they return home expecting to do whatever they want how they want because they cried wolf.

Accepted Insurance

Cape Fear Valley Behavioral Health Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. Upon discharge from this unit patients work closely with the case manager to ensure follow up care is provided within seven days of discharge.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

This deserves a zero. I have tried to call the number for help at least 8 times. I m asked to put in an extension and I don t have one or hold for the operator and then am told by a recording that an operator is not available and hangs up!!!God forbid your need help. They don t even care enough to answer the phone. Reporting this to my insurance company.

I ve been struggling for months and after one visit I feel like a weight was lifted off my shoulder. We were given great advice and came up with a plan to get my son on the right path. Dr.Sherry is amazing and my son immediately took to her.

I spent 9 days in the hospital after an attempt. The staff were not well equipped to help kids with panic attacks. The security guards are the only competent people here. The nurses ask you a bunch of questions every day, pump you full of meds, and put you in a room with 10 other kids. The therapy lessons we followed were printed from online. We never received one on one counseling, I did not receive accommodations (headphones) for my overstimulation even though I was promised one. I was never actually properly mentally evaluated and never received a diagnosis. Please be wary of sending your kid here.

I've been coming here for over a year and every visit has been exceptional! The staff is helpful, efficient, and friendly, and I feel that they truly care about their patients. They are always patient with me and quick to answer any questions I have [no matter how trivial the question may seem] any time I go in for an appointment. The first few visits did take a little while as they needed to get my medical information and to work through trying different treatments/medicines. Now I mostly go for check ups - for these visits, they always get me in to see my doctor quickly and she is very good at making sure to take the time to actually listen and check in with me on how I'm doing with my medication. At the end of every visit they make sure I get a copy of my visit summary, and are very accommodating/considerate of my work schedule when they go to schedule my next appointment. The security guard during the afternoon shift is also great! Anytime it's dark out when I leave an appointment [during the winter months when it gets dark early] he offers to walk me out to my car to make sure I get there safely. Overall, wonderful experience every time I go in for an appointment!
