About BNI Treatment Centers

BNI Treatment Centers for Teens is a drug and alcohol rehab in Agoura Hills, California. They offer dual-diagnosis treatment and medical detox for teens in residential, intensive outpatient, and partial hospitalization settings.

The inpatient dual diagnosis program provides treatment for teens aged 12 through 17. Treatment consists of medical stabilization, and individual, group, and family therapy. Treatment methods include academic support, water sports, yoga, surf therapy, mindfulness, art and music therapy, and equine therapy. On-site tutors and computer stations are provided to ensure teens do not fall behind on schoolwork.

The partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides intensive daytime treatment that helps adolescents learn emotional regulation, stress reduction techniques, and new coping skills. PHP treatment takes place five days per week, with 30 to 36 hours of programming. Participants get one family session or parent coaching session per week, two individual therapy sessions per week, and weekly meetings with a psychiatrist.

The intensive outpatient program (IOP) requires engagement in outpatient programming three to five days per week for three hours per day or six to 15 hours per week. IOP sessions are offered in the afternoons to accommodate school schedules.

I have been searching for support for my son for months now and after exhausting correspondences with 40+ treatment centers across the country, Doug at BNI treatment centers has been nothing short of a breath of fresh that has filled me with hope in this difficult process. Not only was he compassionate and understanding he was extremely knowledgeable and insightful. He also took the time to personally contact me to support us in navigating where would be the best fit for us whether it was with his program or elsewhere. He even gave me recommendations that saved so much time and provided clear direction and appropriate resources that have been invaluable. I have nothing but respect and admiration for professionals who show how much they care by how they follow through, offer their support in the way YOU need it most, and have the best outcome for the entire family at the forefront of what they do. I would trust Doug and BNI wholeheartedly with the care of my son and recommend this program to anyone finding themselves in my position and needing safe and effective solutions for their loved ones.

I went to BNI Calabasas in 2021. The first few days were hard, but the staff made me feel absolutely comfortable and validated. I ve been to other residentials and I can tell you, this place is the best option. The groups are still memorable to this day, being educational and valuable for life. I was only 13 when I went in and had a group full of a lot older kids then me, I found a lasting friendship with a girl in there who was the same age as me who is still my best friend to this day. And when we both got on Level 3, they let us become roommates! It was honestly a great experience for being a treatment center. I absolutely LOVE and MISS Rose so much! So many other staff who helped me and sat with me through the laughs and the tears! BNI is a great place for troubled or lost teens. I absolutely loved all the activities we did (Equine therapy with horses, swimming , surfing, going on outings). This place is genuine and as fun a rehab can get To this day, I remember Rose being the most amazing rehab mom ever and she is someone I will always remember and respect! Thank you BNI for the support, treatment, and tools you gave me to succeed in life!

I don't have the space here to say everything I want about how spectacular BNI is. Their professionalism, courtesy, and expertise were off the charts. Most importantly, they really truly cared about our child and our family. If you as a parent are in the same position we were, I absolutely implore you to reach out to BNI.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.
12-step icon12-Step
Participants engaged in 12 step programs receive intensive peer coaching (sponsorship) and community support. Spiritual development as a means of achieving psychological and emotional healing and growth is the cornerstone of 12 step recovery, but religious affiliations are not required. Meetings are free, anonymous, and open to the public, though specialized formats are available, including groups for seniors, teens, and family members. Evening, night, and day meetings are conducted year-round in most communities.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. The length of stay at the detoxification program is determined according to the specific needs of the patient.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in California is a method that therapists often use for the effective treatment of substance use disorders. It is based on the principle that substance abuse stems from unhelpful ways of thinking and patterns of behavior, which can be changed by helping the individual learn better ways of coping.

equine-therapy iconEquine Therapy

During group therapy, men and women learn to express their emotions openly in a non judgmental setting. This helps you process your feelings and reduces feelings of social isolation that are often associated with addiction.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

For clients who are struggling with ambivalence toward change, motivational interviewing in California can help strengthen their commitment to change. Using a conversational method, the therapist helps you explore your motivations and empowers you to make the changes you desire.

The goal of couples therapy in California is to strengthen the couple's relationship. The therapist may take one or more approaches to counseling which may include the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic couple's therapy.

Family therapy offers a platform for members to have an open dialogue about the challenges that addiction has placed on the family unit. Through guided sessions, therapists can help families develop healthy communication skills and address unresolved issues. By working together toward a common goal, they help to support their loved one's sobriety.

The goal of creative arts therapy in California is to encourage growth and transformation. It can be used in individual and group settings with both children and adults. Options include movement, music, and painting.

I honestly don't know where we would be without BNI. Our daughter had already been to 2 treatment centers before and they didn't seem to help at all. We were so skeptical about doing treatment yet again, but she was in such a bad dark place with her mental health, we had no choice. Thank God we found BNI!! The level of care she received there was unlike anything we'd experienced before. Her therapist was amazing, she really got to the root of her issues. And her psychiatrist was absolutely incredible. We had so many questions and concerns but could never seem to get answers from psychiatrists at previous treatment centers. Here, the doctor was extremely responsive and answered all of our (many many) questions. In the time she's been home she's doing absolutely amazing!! She's happier than I've seen her in years, attending school regularly, participating in extra curriculars again, doing great work in therapy, and our family feels whole again. Thank you BNI from the bottom of my heart!!!

Pros:BNI is a good treatment center to help at risk adolescents. Adolescents truly grow and do better upon completing treatment. The facility is very clean and has some good staff. Good chef. Beautiful homes. Lots of activities for kids.Cons:Expensive. It is not a center to help actively psychosis nor autistic children. Those kids are usually ostracized and singled out.It is not a medical facility. It is more of a mental health treatment center but It is owned by medical doctors, who didn t wish to practice traditional medicine and decided to go into mental health and own mental health facilities, without the psychology education and training. It is a profit organization. Patients are medicated but it is not required. There are always on staff nurses and PA s but The Psychiatrists, Dr. A and Dr. O are rarely on site. They don t know much about what s going on with the patients and do not show behavioral concerns. The Psychiatrists do not hire their own staff and pretty much allow their operations director, who doesn t have a background in mental health, to make all of the hire and termination decisions. They do not know much about their employees nor do they hire mental health professionals with diverse backgrounds. They are CBT oriented and do not appreciate depth approaches. The operations director is more in control than the actual owners are. The facility is not directed nor ran by Psychologists. Most of the clinicians and PA s are unlicensed/Pre Licensed passing through until they fulfill their purpose because a licensed professional would not accept nor stay at this organization. The turn over rate is very high at this organization and clinicians rarely stay over a year. As soon as a clinician is licensed or planning to sit for licensure, they resign. BNI does not value their staff. They do not appreciate nor acknowledge the hard work of their staff. Staff is overwhelmed with lots of paperwork notes, insurance etc. The clinicians are pressured to submit paperwork, so that BNI can charge insurance thousands of dollars a day for residential stay. Many clinicians, residential counselors, psychologists and therapists resign and They will hire and discard employees at the drop of a dime, which affects many patients and their families, due to formed connections. Their employee list is constantly changing and their website is outdated with old staff members, to appear like a stable company.Cases are split, instead of one clinician doing the individual, family and parenting. Also Marriage and family therapists are not hired to work with families. The organization s decisions are made without a clinical mindset.

If you re reading this right now, life is probably a bit hard. Maybe a lot hard. And maybe you don t even know where to start on this search. I looked at all the places. I did my research. We were desperate, but if a residential placement had to happen, I wanted it to be excellent so we would never have to do it again. The first thing which made BNI stand out was that they hired doctoral level therapists to work with the students and their families. I m in the counseling field myself and knew we would need someone very experienced and knowledgable due to the complicated nature of my daughter s situation. The second thing that made BNI stand out was Doug who was in charge through the entire admissions process. Of all the places I called, Doug was the only one who didn t just tell me the (astronomical) price of their program. He immediately asked for my insurance info, called my insurance company, and then came back with a shockingly affordable proposal. BNI is not just out to make a buck. It was clear every step of the way that their true desire was to help these hurting kids and their families.Thirdly, through our time at BNI I came to realize what a difference it made to be in a program owned by adolescent psychiatrists. The doctors were so invested! And not just in figuring out the right meds (which they did superbly). In my daughter s first week there Dr. O was taking the girls out on an early morning hike to look at plants. This would not happen in any other treatment program!Dr Schwartz was our therapist and she was simply amazing. Able to connect with each member of the family, guide us through hard conversations while validating each of our experiences, and seeing the best in us. We learned new ways to work through the hard parts of life together. She was priceless. This program focuses on teaching the students how to live and cope once they are back home. A skills based approach that really works. My daughter has been home for about 7 months and I will be forever grateful for the changes she went through at BNI. She says, with all seriousness, that she would probably be dead if it weren t for BNI. While that is hard to hear, it only increases my gratitude for this program. Are things perfect? Of course not! They didn t send back a robot. But I do have the best version of my daughter back and there is nothing more for which I could ask.

If you have an adolescent with addiction , there is no better care than BNI.They are head and shoulders above any other treatment facility. They care for the whole child. The medically surpervised detox being the FIRST order of business, your child can detox , they can t do it on their own , f d ont believe your child if they say they quit on their own. It s impossible. Especially if it s an opioid addiction .If your insurance pays for this program, admit your child . You can have peace of mind, , your child is well cared for.
