About Bethel Colony of Mercy

Bethel Colony of Mercy is an alcohol and drug abuse treatment center located in Lenoir, North Carolina. They serve as a faith based non-denominational nonprofit that provides free inpatient care and aftercare treatment to adult men and women through their gender specific programming. The facility currently offers beds for 88 men and 20 women.

The inpatient program at Colony of Mercy is best suited for individuals who need a high level of care. Accommodations and meals are provided as clients focus on their recovery needs. The services they offer include classroom teaching, workbooks, audio messages, personal counseling, and Christian based worship services. Amenities include outdoors therapy, sports, and televisions with selected programming. The program lasts 65 days, with an optional extension.

The inpatient program’s group therapy involves treatment through the process of connecting in a group setting to discuss and work through mental, emotional, and physical issues. There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psychoeducation, and health education workshops.

Individual therapy creates the space to explore psychological challenges associated with addiction. Individuals are given the opportunity to talk about and process their emotions. This often includes unresolved trauma, anger, depression, anxiety, and the need for more control or autonomy in life.

Faith based treatment utilizes the spiritual beliefs and teachings of a particular faith to help individuals overcome addiction. Through a connection to their Higher Power, or the God of their religion, overcoming defeating behaviors is thought to become possible. This usually involves daily time spent in prayer, devotion, or reflection to create a deeper connection and the feeling of support through this connection.

Bethel Colony of Mercy has an enrollment fee of $350. The center may be in network with insurance providers, such as Aetna, Beacon, BlueCross/BlueShield, Cigna, Humana, Optum, and Wellpoint. Please check your coverage and out of network benefits.

As a student in 2008 then volunteer Counseling Coordinator for a season in 2009, l had the opportunity to experience first hand the powerful expression of God s faithful work in the lives of those (like me) who were dealing with an addiction. In 2017 l came back to Bethel Colony of Mercy for a year as a volunteer Strategic Advisor focused on building our ministry brand in Caldwell County, forging key alliances and assessing new, innovative paths to more robustly resource this 76-year-old transformation ministry. In 2023 God led me back as a volunteer to assist the executive director Pastor Paul Pruitt and board of directors as the ministry set its course on growth across both the men s & women s growing campuses. The desperate need for Bethel s innovative, 65-day Biblically driven, faith-based program is without question. More than 12 people die daily in North Carolina (alone) from opioid overdoses. America is in the dark abyss of substance abuse agony and the only durable solution is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, while following a path of daily discipleship. With a youngest daughter who has had addiction impacts in her own life, l cannot help but have new hope kindled whenever observing the lives of women like her so radically changing on the beautiful 148 acre women s campus in Lenoir, NC. There is hope, healing and health here at Bethel Colony of Mercy. My personal recommendation is without qualification along with a strong encouragement and invitation for anyone who is at a dead end in their lives. Just pick up the phone and call. Addicts need support and love This is NOT the place. You wrote someone up for their baseboards being wet after you require them to be cleaned? Seems like they re constantly looking for ways to kick anyone out and when they want to come back they want you to call twice a week and basically beg to be let back in?! That is not really welcoming with open arms and I m sure they have an excuse for treating them this way. If you re looking for a loving support to help with someone in addiction I would find a different program. I have never heard of a facility wanting to help someone in addiction just toss them out and have them beg to come back. Ridiculous.

Hello Larissa, we have never dismissed anyone from our program for wet baseboards or any surface that got cleaned. It sounds like you have been mislead on the real reason someone got dismissed or if they got dismissed at all. If someone disqualified themselves from our program or choose to leave. We do give them an opportunity to come back. We do ask them to check in, because we want to make sure we hold that bed for them if they desire to come back. If they do not desire we want to make sure we make it available to the next person who has applied. We hope your love one will come to real freedom, that is possible through Jesus.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Per session payment lets you pay for each treatment at the time of service. You may also pay for a certain number of sessions up front and then pay for more if needed. This format allows you to tailor the financial investment to your specific needs and avoid having a large lump sum payment due at the end of the treatment program.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Clients who are exiting detox or stepping down from intensive inpatient care typically transition directly into outpatient treatment. Outpatient programs are designed to allow clients to either re-enter or remain in their communities while receiving robust, personalized care. Many facilities offer evening, night, or weekend services to accommodate clients' home and work schedules. The most common outpatient treatment modalities include psychotherapy, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
inpatient iconInpatient
Clients receiving treatment at an inpatient rehab facility are typically in early recovery or are at heightened risk of relapse. Clients in inpatient care remain at the facility for the duration of their program, enabling them to focus solely on their recovery. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive psychotherapy, often including group and family counseling as well as one-on-one sessions. Recovery-focused life skills education is another common service. Many rehabs also offer evidence-based holistic therapies.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer a complete continuum of care for clients in the maintenance phase of recovery and are predicated on the idea that addiction disease is a chronic condition prone to relapse and warranting continuing care. Clients collaborate with their care team and case manager to access the specific rehab aftercare services they need to promote their sustained sobriety. Peer coaching, relapse prevention services, career counseling, and 12 step program induction are common in these programs.
12-step icon12-Step
12 step programs are based on a model of life-long recovery and are rooted in peer support and spiritual development. Regular attendance at 12 step meetings is the cornerstone of treatment, as is the selection of a peer sponsor to guide participants through the steps of recovery. These steps are based on non-denominational spiritual principles and are designed to foster self-awareness, forgiveness, acceptance, and accountability. Specialized programs are widely available, including programs for teens, seniors, and families.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services can provide customized interventions tailored to the needs of the individual and family. An intervention specialist can design and conduct a drug intervention in North Carolina that encourages the individual to enter treatment in a non-coercive manner. The specialist will meet with the family to plan the intervention, then provide expert insights to guide the process and appropriate follow-up care.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Often used as a "step-down" option after you've completed a residential or inpatient program, the partial hospitalization program (PHP) typically involves a minimum of 20 hours of treatment per week for approximately 90 days. Programs offer structured programming that includes relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy services. Insurance coverage for PHP treatment varies among insurance providers.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
A medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive drugs and alcohol from your body. A team of licensed medical professionals will look after you 24/7 to monitor your health, help minimize discomfort, and provide medications if necessary to alleviate any withdrawal symptoms. This process is typically the first step in your recovery and may take around 5-7 days, although length will depend on your individual needs.

Treatments

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

It is unfortunate and puzzling that this "ministry" declines entry to anyone who is HIV+ or HepC+. Clearly not a lot has changed within the last 30 years if this is still a reason for denial. It is no longer the 80s or 90s and education and treatment have greatly improved. Unfortunately their decision only continues to uphold the stigma surrounding HIV and other communicable diseases. There is no desire from their management and Board of Directors to receive education from medical providers experienced in this field.

Response from the owner7 months ago
Hello Samuel that is not an accurate statement. Only those who have ongoing medical needs with HepC do we recommend to attend another program that can handle the medical components. When someone who has had progressed HepC symptoms they need more attention that we can help with. We are not a medical program as stated in our application. There are some requirements that need to be meet to be admitted. If you have any other questions please call.

So I spent approximately 20 years in addiction to crack/cocaine. That's not to mention starting other drugs and drinking around 12 - 13 years old. During those years I completed at least two other programs, and many out-patient and 12 step groups. Ultimately, it Was Bethel Colony that helped set me free from the things that tormented me! Perhaps timing and/or my complete surrender were factors. But I know that it was at Bethel that I found freedom. They had all the factors needed; the care, the love, the knowledge, the wisdom, the experience, the expertise and yes, the power of God. And I thank God that He used the people and facility at Bethel to help me and countless men like me. I have recommended them countless times and currently can hardly wait to see the transformation of a friend of mine who took my suggestion and is at Bethel, now.

I can not speak highly enough about Bethel Colony Womens Campus. If you are reading this review my whole heart goes out to you because you are likely tired and things are probably worse than they ve ever been. You don t have the answers .. what you ve been doing isn t working. Trying to figure out how it will all work out .. family, kids , bills, possibly court , a home , a vehicle. I know. I finally just said .. Ok. Yes I ll go and I m forever grateful that I walked on that campus back in 2019. My life quickly began on a new path with God that I can t begin to explain how amazing , how restored, how different, how good things continued to happen- one right after the other - and how faithful God was during the time I spent at Bethel and continues to be. I just had to say Yes. I can t speak highly enough of the staff and the ladies you will be surrounded by. They have walked in your shoes at some point and they are really good people. You will hear testimony after testimony of changed lives because God is at the center. These people will walk it out with you - even now in 2024 they still answer any call or request for prayer personally. I am forever grateful to have recently even been welcomed back for a time of healing from grief of the loss of loved one. While on Women s Campus you ll have a pretty intense schedule , some responsibilities and be expected to follow rules and be on time; but you will also have lots of breaks in between. You ll have clean cabins good food , a cozy area with comfy couches n snacks, there is a smoking area , you ll get individual biblical counseling every week , instead of any drug or alcohol class you ll attend Bible class/ study daily , quiet time you ll have a work assignment for a couple hours a day , attend church , you ll get to get free items from clothes closet each week, there s a craft room , a gym with some equipment. There s a stream that runs through the mountain property.I m so grateful for God working in and through Bethel. Life Changing.

I will forever cherish this place. The Hill. 9 years ago I was bound to meth and pills. I gave my life to Christ in the Loft. They took me through counseling and deliverance. My life has forever been changed. Jesus saved my life but these loving and caring people showed me the way. I m still walking in freedom because of what they taught me. I m saved, delivered, healed, and my marriage was restored thanks to Bethel! May God continue to bless this place!

I was a down and out broken man when I came to Bethel back in 2022. I was lost in addiction and mentally unstable. Bethel accepted me as I was just as Jesus does but did not leave me in my mess. Between the pastors, the staff and the community of men on the campus they helped guide me back to a thriving relationship with Jesus Christ and to deal with the pain that only a power greater than myself could mend (Jesus). Today I am 18 months sober and my journey in my relationship with God continues. I could not have done it without the help of Bethel Colony Of Mercy! I am forever greatful!

I went to Bethel Colony of Mercy in 2021 and it drastically changed my life. This program helped to equip me for battle. The staff is amazing, each member leading by example; always directing you back to biblical truths. While there, I developed an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ and it laid the foundation of my recovery. I also developed friendships with some godly women, who hold me accountable. I am so grateful for this program; all the restoration, love and support that I have gained by attending. Praise the Lord!
