About Avanti Center

Based in Oak Grove, Minnesota, Avanti Center for Girls is an accredited facility offering supportive and intensive care for children and teens assigned female at birth, as well as trans and non-binary individuals of all ethnicities and sexualities. Services are geared toward behavioral and emotional health, including self-harm and injury such as substance abuse.

My favorite thing about this center is its commitment to inclusivity. Given how hostile the current climate is towards trans and non-binary people, I think it’s wonderful that they signal their care is inclusive of people who identify with this. It’s a great sign, and an early indicator to LGBTQI+ folk that this is a safe space.

Residential care at Avanti involves individual and group therapy, specifically dialectical behavior therapy and skills building. Their trauma-informed approach offers peace of mind, while their parenting and caregiver support is great to see given the demographic of their clients. Medication management is also available, as well as psychiatric assessments and dual-diagnosis care. I also love that they provide aftercare services to give individuals the best chance at reintegration into their home and schooling post-treatment.

Avanti staff competence is questionable. They do not communicate reliably with parents. This is not a place for younger teens as there are scary situations that occur with residents at times including violence, threatening language, and they sometimes are forced to have a roommate they may be uncomfortable with. Mistakes were made on our treatment plan. My daughter was listed as having suicidal ideation when that was not the case. I felt our child was just a number to them as they cut and pasted on her treatment plan to the point of forgetting to add her name in several places so it just said Name . We were not informed of the length of stay required to complete the program which is up to 8.5 months. We were ordered by the court to admit our child to inpatient care due to her social anxiety and refusal to go to school. Avanti was the first place to have an open spot so we went with it while being uniformed that our child would be stuck there for several months. Her anxiety was made worse by being there and there is nothing we can do because of the court order.Update after discharge:Avanti has not contacted us at all since discharge. Their treatment plan is supposed to include six months of follow up care with monthly check in with the family. They have not even contacted us once.

Essentially everything is what you make it! But I had a indifferent experience! There definitely could have been improvements on lgbtq resources. But I was a resident back in 2015-16 they had amazing staff and staff that were not so great at all! But there missions and plans they taught me I still use in life now! I ve went to reunions and did my time and been out and experienced more really hard times in life but I m grateful for what I learned because it changed my life and DBT is what lead me To other beautiful journeys and commitments to life ! It s not easy being queer and colored but this place did more than I can ask for now that I look back! Life is beautiful and maybe the company did lose its shine but we will see That team they had when I was there was pretty solid

If I could give this review zero stars, I would. My stay at Avanti was only two months due to my parents making the decision to pull me from the program. ( I think the typical stay is 5-9 months) They had given another girl my medication and then didn t give me any, and they would not send the right medications with me during passes. Not only did they mess up my medications, but they did not listen to anything I had to say. One girl that was there would call me names and yell cuss words at me. My one on one therapist told me, if you get your parents to pull you from our program, you re just going to go home and end up killing yourself . All of the doors used to exit the buildings are always unlocked from the inside, meaning multiple girls would run. Every time someone would run we would all sit in the fire side until they were sustained and calm. You get one phone call a day, for only 10 minutes, and sometimes when we had to go to the fire side, we didn t get to make phone calls to our families. On top of everything I ve already listed, we would sleep on thin gym mats, like the ones they use in elementary school. Lots of drama, bullying, and racism. Not a good place to go if you re looking for your child to get the help they need.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient rehabs typically provide a full continuum of care both for clients in early recovery and for those who are well advanced in their recovery journey. Their levels of care typically include partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), sober living/halfway housing, and standard outpatient programming. Many outpatient facilities offer evening, night, and weekend services, including addiction counseling and recovery-focused life skills training, to accommodate clients' work and family schedules.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

If you want a real deal, go elsewhere. They say they will take care of you, but they really do not. Sometimes I hear them talking about residents in a non-respectful way. This was nothing of what I expected from them.

If I could leave zero stars I would. I was SA'd by another girl there & when I told them they let her continually escape to get to me and eventually let her escape the facility. Another girl managed to jump out a window that was unlocked & got seriously hurt. A girl was left alone in the showers and managed to break the tile and harm herself with the lack of supervision. Another came to group with broken and bloody fists because they did nothing when she had had enough and punched her window over and over again. When I FINALLY was able to call my parents days after my incident, they told me not to say anything. Thank goodness I didn't listen and told them because my parents fought tooth and nail to pull me from the program and didn't let them sway them. The staff would scream at you, never had rules straight and would punish you for doing something you were told was okay by another staff member. You were given more medication than was necessary, and one on one therapy was useless. The only benefit I got from it was a diagnosis for my CPTSD, but I wish I had gotten it from an in patient hospital, as I found far more progress in those than from this horrible place. Please think twice before sending your little girl here. Now that I'm a mother, my heart breaks thinking of sending my child to a place like this. And my parents still feel intense guilt that they sent me here and I was treated so horribly.

My time at here was very bittersweet. While some staff are very supportive there were others who I feel abused their power, when traumatic events happened in the house we were told we were not allowed to talk about it even in one on one therapy. the DBT treatment was often canceled or over taken because of other people s behaviors. Even staff like the therapists and intake people were not very supportive and if you were pulled for the program because you or your family felt like you were ready you would be shamed and called unsuccessful . Phone calls with anyone were monitored and if staff thought something said was questionable you would get phone privileges taken away and would get a consequence. When I tried to talk to leadership figures about things that were happening in the house I would get in trouble and they would threaten to take away phone calls with family. When I talked about things that happened to me to get me there staff laughed at me and told me to get over it because this is the real world . You were never taken seriously and were over prescribed medication. Living conditions there were absolutely terrible with rotting rooftops and no air conditioning, they would never let the parents come to the house and would send them away if they came to the dorm. I went here 3 years ago and I am still traumatized by the things said and done by not only members but staff, living there caused me more harm than good. They don t tell the family members anything and will take days to respond to phone calls from parents. This is not a place for teenagers to be for mental health.

I stayed for 5 months starting in 2021. I feel that the program it's self works. The strict routine was good for us even though it was a nightmare residential suck but this one was effective. The staff are all there because they need clinical experience for thier social work degree so they don't stay long, not experienced and don't really like it. The management Stephenie is honestly the worst person there! The place is dirty but the food is so good!! Most of the staff want to help people and are nice. I would give it a chance I think your kid will know when they are finished with the program I left a month early and I feel that if I was there for a extra month I would have gotten worse. In my case though I wasn't the problem I just needed to build confidence and surround myself with people that were nice to me. I am happy now and have enough skills to cope with stressful situations. I still see my therapist that I met in treatment.

Worst place ever! Everytime I had thoughts and plans they never took it seriously! Even if you acted they wouldn t do anything! I was having chest pains and they didn t do anything, I had to go to the point where I had to yell and scream. They yelled at me and even threw ice packs at me. They made me feel left out. My parents tried to take me out but the people that worked there wouldn t let them take me out. Some of the residents and staff were nice but a lot of them no. I was blamed by a staff that their day was bad because of me. I was prescribed to way to many meds some I didn t even need. I ended up taking my meds more than I needed (bad thing) because I wanted out of the place and I couldn t and they didn t believe me till I went to the drs and it showed I had extra levels more than I needed then they believed me. They always sit in the office and when you knock they never come out and help you. It s rare if they did. I was there for almost a year, the worst year of my life. The staff never had the same ideas for rules even! One staff would let you do something then the next staff wouldn t and say it s not allowed. They never got on the same page. My life was threatened there, I was chased outside the building! I saw people be attacked, I saw people do stuff! They are unfair and treat everyone differently.Couple years later the chest pains were because I have a tumor in my lung, thanks avanti;)This was in 2021-2022!NEVER SEND YOUR KID HERE!

While they helped my youngest child get to the next step from inpatient hospital, we found the ability to handle special needs for any of the kids was not available. My youngest suffered so much because the autism and ADHD was not handled properly along with the mental health. There was some staff members I appreciated. I appreciated the DBT but with such a tight staff and limited training many areas where rough. Also, regardless of the amount of documentation provided ignoring some of the kids special needs made it a more volatile and emotional place to have your loved one.

All of the high ratings are from staff. Every girl that went here knows how horrible this place was. I attended for 6 months back in 2016/2017. I just followed rules and essentially faked everything to get out of that nightmare. There was about 3 staff that actually liked their job and really tried to help. The rest made it obvious it was about control. When you actually were in crisis they provided no help. But i specifically remember them moving everyone from the building for HOURS simple because i wouldn t take my nose ring out that they didn t notice for months before. I m a sober, healthy adult now and I can honestly say that all this place did was traumatize my 14 yr old self more. If you re considering admitting your child here, please look elsewhere as Avanti does not prioritize the health, safety or well being of any individuals that step foot on that property.
