outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

nicotine iconNicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

My Daughter was in Austen for a year and a half. At the end was a waste of time and money!! But what really upsets my family was the lack of compassion, my daughter never received a call to check on her! How can the professionals found up if the treatment given was the correct one? Don't they want to learn? After spending almost $300,000.00 I felt we were cheated!!

A truly transformative place if you can afford a real stay (at least 6 months) and are ready to do the work

There are some exceptional staff members here.It is important to understand that The Austen Riggs Center offers a program that can only be utilized in a time frame of 1 - 2 years. This was how it was originally structured. Unfortunately our health insurance system does not cater to this type of long term treatment. Please read the description of its program very carefully. I hope the current director can take a closer look at why this hospital is appropriate for those only able to stay 1 - 2 years.

This is not a place to heal from trauma or any treatment resistant disorder .They will lure you in with the private rooms. The fact that everything is open and you can come and go freely. The ability to basically do whatever you want as there are no searches and Very few rules. The 4 times a week therapy which I ve really only seen Riggs offer.Well here s a reality check, It s to good to be true. The real fact of this place is it s run to make a profit pure and simple. NEVER have I meet a group of individuals more OPENLY fixated on greed alone. My family is not poor but if you re spending around 30k for the first month of treatment, I d like some treatment. Not to be told I won t be better and able to do the work on less I m there at least a year. It s the way that they make you well aware almost daily that your treatment is on the line if you don t find that cash that bothered me the most. One of Riggs many tactics at stealing your money is to make you feel like it s the only place that can help you. That without them you ll be homeless and a failure like you already are. I won t go into the mental abuse my therapist put me through. It would take to long, Yet the way I was treated was beyond appalling.Once your in the community and in the 4 times a week therapy it s very easy to just get lost in the weeks and months your there. I found a lot of hope, kindness and compassion from the community which was a huge reason for me to overlook the negatives well I was there. Yet it remains that this place will just keep dragging you along as long as you can pay for it.The place is beautiful and honestly has so much potential in actually helping people. Yet I can t in good faith recommend this place do to the harm it caused me both mentally and financially

They told me to be a homeless person that there was no hope for me and they love to listen. They don t help people. They hurt people. Exposed me to all sorts of radiation I didn t need. Now I have skin cancer because of them poking me.

What a terrible place. I was coerced into going to Austen Riggs between April and June of this year. From the moment I arrived, I had a massive panic attack and things only got worse. The therapists and staff are inattentive and unprofessional. There were a few people I liked somewhat, but in general this is a well orchestrated scam to keep struggling, traumatized people feeling sick. They load you up with ineffective and dangerous meds and tell you that you re the problem. When in fact THEY are the problem. All of them are contributing to this cultural sickness that those who see things as they really are and tell the truth are the problem. It s not true. Their food is also bad but that was really the least of it. Please don t go to Riggs. You can do better. I promise you. Even if you just sit in the courtyard at kripalu for a few days, you ll get much more benefit out of that. I m a writer, a singer, a spiritual seeker. Riggs tried to destroy that part of me. It was really sad. I am a traumatized woman with a grandfather who survived the Holocaust on his own and then beat my mother as a child. I was always going to have demons. But there are tools and modalities to help me and they don t exist at Riggs. The meditations and yoga were nice but I was the only one who attended. I wasn t supported by a loving, welcoming community. Has anywhere there heard of somatic therapy? I doubt it. My friends, this is how you heal. I hope Riggs goes out of business and its decent looking campus is bought by someone who can truly help people in need. I didn t want my parents spending 70k over 2 months for absolutely nothing. Arts and crafts tickle you? Then go to an art school. I could say a lot more but it doesn t seem worth it. Rich people with money, find somewhere better. Now I have to undo the damage that Riggs did to me. They told me I have borderline and narcissistic personality disorder! Hahaha!I had a long talk with Bessel van der Kolk about all this. It s no coincidence they ve never invited him to speak. They don t want anyone getting better there.Goodbye and good luck!

Austen Riggs saved my life. I went in a complete mess- coping with addition, co-morbid mental illnesses, and a no control over my life. Yes, Riggs is expensive. It's unfortunate because so few can afford it- but if you can, I implore you to do it. In seven months, I pulled myself out from a dark place to a somewhat lighter place, and was able to return back to school, work, and living in a big city. The people who work at Riggs are some of the most selfless, kindest, and wonderful people! I highly recommend it if you need serious, long term help to make yourself a functional and happy person again.

My 17 month experience at Austen Riggs saved my life. Each staff member, every single staff member, cares about the patient. It is disheartening to read reviews from former patients for whom treatment here was not helpful and I'm truly sorry the experience isn't the same as mine. Treatment at Riggs isn't a one-size-fits-all approach. Each therapist, each team, each patient has his/her/their own style and unique personality. It takes a considerable amount of time to dig in and figure out the where and how we can safely approach each other; this requires the patient to "give in" as much as one is able throughout the process. Sometimes it takes months or even longer. Yes, the cost can be prohibitive. I myself would have stayed longer if possible. The Austen Riggs Center makes clear from their web site and in the interview insurance may not pay. In fact for myself and many of my peers it did not and it was upsetting for us and for staff. The issue with the high cost of mental health care is not the fault of this hospital, but with our health care system. Our insurance carriers are not abiding by the law as it pertains to parity. Please consider demanding better treatment from your insurer. I hope we all continue seeking treatment wherever we can. For me, I continue to thank my team at Riggs, especially Dr. Delgado, Daltrey Turner and the fantastic nurses.

Austin Riggs literally saved our lives! Their treatment protocols were exceptionally effective and their staff is exceptionally responsive. The Center is for people who WANT the help, not just necessarily need it. If you re willing to do the hard, often painful work and listen really listen to what your patient and his/her team of specialists say, your entire family can be transformed.
