About Atlantic Health System Laboratory Services

Atlantic Health System - Overlook Medical Center Outpatient Services is a place of recovery and can help you with your addiction. They offer help through their outpatient program which is where they will conduct therapy to combat mental health issues and addiction. This place is in Summit, New Jersey and they are right next to Summit Community Center.

This center is pretty flexible. They offer telehealth as an option to receive treatment. Some people actually prefer this option rather than going in. It’s because they can choose their environment to receive their therapy session. As you can guess, comfort is important when going through your thoughts and feelings and it’s important to have a space that allows you to express those emotions. Not to mention that having telehealth as an option allows you to connect from anywhere with a wifi connection. If you have to travel for work, you can take advantage of this.

People have said great things about this place. But their comments are more so directed at primary health rather than behavioral care.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Overcoming a drug or alcohol addiction is a difficult process, but through careful evaluation and individual determination, it can be accomplished. At Atlantic Behavioral Health, their outpatient chemical dependency programs help adults and adolescents overcome substance abuse issues, while remaining at home, at school or on the job.

inpatient iconInpatient

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Group-based psycho-education and therapy is provided during a three-hour period, three to five days a week. Because patients in our program return home after treatment sessions, they can more quickly begin the transition to everyday living situations and challenges.

aftercare iconAftercare

Clients in a rehab aftercare program have typically completed detox and intensive inpatient and are medically stable. These programs are designed to address addiction recovery as a life-long process. Outpatient counseling and recovery education are typically categorized as drug rehab aftercare, but many clients continue to receive support after being discharged from formal outpatient treatment. Case managers and recovery teams facilitate clients' access to peer coaching, career counseling, 12 step program induction, and related services.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

In the event of a psychiatric emergency, Atlantic Behavioral Health offers crisis intervention services, including a 24-hour hotline, risk assessments and screenings, and community trauma assistance. Newton Medical Center is a state-designated Psychiatric Emergency Services and Screening Center, providing 24-hour emergency mental health care to patients of any age, both over the phone and in person.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

A medical detox is the safest way to wean your body off addictive substances. When you become physically dependent on alcohol or drugs, quitting abruptly can cause a host of challenging and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. In medically assisted detox, a team of medical professionals will be on hand to monitor any symptoms, to provide medication if possible, and to help keep you as safe and as comfortable as possible throughout this process.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in New Jersey is the process of addressing the complex issues involved with addiction. Challenges are identified and addressed through individual and group counseling. Participants learn how to manage these issues without the use of substances.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

family iconFamily Therapy

Counseling that includes parental and family involvement is central to their program and highly encouraged. Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. ER was extremely busy. However, thankfully I didn t have to wait long and was taken care of sooner than expected. Nurses were very attentive and caring. Overall had a great experience at this hospital. It was my first time in the ER.

Was just in out patient testing for pre surgical clearance. The first lady was an hispanic female tech. there was a child next to me crying i had my head turned and shes said are u here it over there?. Rude. Then she says you cant put your arm down as she us tying on the rubber band for bloodwork. Rude again... I said yes. I was holding it up so u could tie it. I was trying to help you out. As she was looking for a vein, I guess my being nervous and moving my arm annoyed her as she said you cant keep your arm still. Rude again. i said im nervous. You never had nervous people? Another tech from the other side said yes, all the time. She couldn't find a vein so she called over Ebony. Ebony was the person that took my blood. Very kind, patient, smiling 100% professional. Talked me through the needle. THIS IS THE TECH THAT SHOULD BE TAKING BLOOD AND RETRAINING THE rude one. In Radiology Nicole was the nicest person, kind And personable! That's the overlook i know. Not how I was treated today to get bloodwork, by one of the techs. The back of her shirt said being nice matters. How ironic.

My grandma was here. She was in really bad condition. It was hard to tell what the problem was. My mom asked them to check for blood clots. They said no because she was taking blood clot medication already so there would be no blood clots. But there were blood clots. My grandma died from blood clots.

i m not kidding when i say go to ANY facility other than this one. i went into their ER four different times and every time waited 5+ hours, was RUDELY dismissed, and told i was having anxiety. turns out, i actually had a brain AND heart condition, and went into cardiac arrest shortly after the overlook medical team sent me home without even letting me see a doctor. not only are they rude, they have no idea what they re talking about. was told enlarged ventricles mean nothing when it actually meant i had fluid trapped in my brain. i was told i had no arrhythmias when i did and was presenting in AFIB. will NEVER let me or anyone i love be seen at this facility again, it almost cost me my life.

I ve been to hospitals in the Bronx and I ve been treated better we got in at 9pm and we stood where the line began. The receptionist just looked at us and we did not know if she wanted us to head over and gave us a look as if we were stupid for not reading her mind. Then the nurse that called me for triage was rude. She said my last name and I stood up and she said first name Cruz with an attitude which confused me because my first name is not Cruz so I sat back down and we kept going back and forth because she kept saying first name Cruz and gave me attitude for not understanding that she was only addressing my last name (which btw I told her my first name to confirm). I was so overwhelmed when I got into triage my blood pressure was high. We then waited hours which is normal for the ER. But once we finally got in I got my catscan within the hour of being called in. We had to wait 4 hours for someone to come talk to us about my results and that was only cause the nurse that worked last night was nice enough to talk to the doctor. The nurse guy and the catscan tech were the only nice people that we encountered. At the end they told me I was fine but I read my results and I have three diagnoses that no one even told me about?!?P.S.We were waiting for so long and most of the staff were just chatting and having random conversations. Like huh?!?

This review is mostly criticizing the choice of drug a nurse at this hospital decided to use and the hospitals neglect of drug side effects when choosing what medicine is best to give to patients. To make a long story short I was given a First Generation Anti Psychotic from the 1950s to treat my nausea after getting a concussion from a work accident and I had a deadly side effect. My horror story starts at Overlooks Emergency Room. I came in via an ambulance after hitting my head hard at work. After being seen and given a bed in the hallway I made the mistake of complaining to the nurse about my nausea to which she then gave me an IV of Prochlorperazine. The nightmare started to creep in when I felt this intense wave of anxiety boarding intense panic attack level distress. I found that I couldn t stop moving. I want to make it clear that before this I never had a panic attack. I was so uncontrollably out of my mind that I couldn t sit or lay in my bed anymore. I stormed out of the hospital with my family member and began uncontrollably running and crying. The nurse made no effort to spot my odd behavior and inquire or even think that it could be related to the drug she gave me. The rest is uncomfortable to talk about but to really highlight the horror and the critical mistake this hospital made I have to expose what happened next. I was in the backseat of my family members car and from the full force of the panic and neurological pain I was in I urinated all over myself and opened the door on the highway and began to run. After that I had an entire two days of no sleep and pure pain filled with just walking back and forth in my home uncontrollably to make the pain go away. It was no joke and I felt like 5 minutes were two hours. The pain was so severe that I felt in that moment of unaliving myself just to get rid of the pain. After those two grueling nights I never knew what caused the greatest shock in my life until two weeks ago when I decided to log on to my chart and look at my old chart from that day. I discovered what happened, the antipsychotic that I was given that was to treat my nausea and vomiting had a side effect printed in small text called Akathasia. After doing some research I found that it described all of my symptoms and that most people who had the side effect Akathasia from a drug unalived themselves because of the pure neurological and emotional pain. I was horrified that Overlook Hospital and the nurse working there could be so foolish to keep prescribing this medicine let alone using it for mild nausea and vomiting. The trauma of the Akathasia and of that night made me quit my job and take anti depressants and anti anxiety. It ended my relationship and essentially ruined my life. Overlook and their staff are 100% responsible for destroying my life. The worst part is that no lawyer will represent me to sue as medical malpractice cases are hard to prove and win . I can t imagine the countless people who have had a similar experience and I m writing this review for those people and to hold Overlook hospital responsible for this heinous crime. Till this day I still feel the pain of Akathasia and it has done permanent damage to my mental well being as I still shake when I m anxious and have developed insomnia. I m still proud that I didn t become another statistic of medical malpractice and unalived myself but I can t imagine how many people this has affected all over the world and that their story is untold. Till today there are very few studies on Akathasia and a lot of doctors are unaware how many people experience it and the detrimental effects it has on its victims. Help me grow awareness and hold Overlook Responsible. I will start a protest outside of Overlook and demand they take ownership of this crime. Lastly I add that this happened to me a few years ago and I have only just began to write this review after I have gotten the courage to share my story and recovered some. Thank you for reading if you have gotten this far.

Avoid like the plague. Nothing like getting talked down to by nurses while your mother is dying of cancer. I have no clue why this is an MSK affiliated hospital. Memorial Sloan Kettering needs to seriously reconsider who they partner with. My mother was admitted 2pm and it s 11pm and she s still in the ER waiting to be admitted. We were forced to take her here by MSK basking ridge and I have never been so livid about the complete total disregard for life. How is this the preferred cancer treatment partner.

NEVER bring your loved ones here. If I could leave less than 1 star I would. They made my mother in law wait 12 hours for a room. We had the unfortunate experience of dealing with Michael Milano who not only lied multiple times about when she would be put in a room to get rest, but also yelled and hung up on us. This hospital is so unorganized that even they are frustrated for themselves. Do you and your loved ones a huge favor and go to ANY other emergency room. I never leave reviews so here it is, youve been warned.
